How to Use This Board

Here's our
Twentieth Challenge for you all.

BLACK and WHITE

Details:

  • This topic was chosen by Karma who won our  last Challenge.  The subject of the next  Mini Challenge is Black and White.  Karma says, "Submit a picture that is NOT color.  It can be black and white, sepia, tritone, or duotone, just not a full color photograph.  If you don't shoot black and white, or can't convert your shots in post processing, shoot something that has only the colors black and white in it."

  • Use the attachment feature to show your photos (see directions above in the link to "How to Use This Board") in your post or link to them from your gallery or an offsite location that allows linking using the image codes.  If you have trouble, please contact a moderator (name in blue) or an administrator (name in red) and we'll help you post your photo.  If you have your photo in your gallery, please don't use the attachment feature as that puts the photo on our server twice but rather link to it.  It's best if your photos are at least 500 pixels wide so that they are easily seen.

  • Please upload up to 4 entries per member for this challenge.

  • The challenge is open now and will be closed to uploads on May 17, 2008   and then we'll vote on them.

  • Please tell us the camera you used to take your photo and when you took it.  Please only enter photos taken by you.

  • Please put a title above your photo.  We need the title for the poll listing.

  • Of course, we're going to see who is posting the photos so this is not an anonymous challenge.  So start posting.  Click on the "Reply" button below and start this challenge!
Remember, this is a fun project!

This entry is titled Brevard North Carolina White Squirrell. Brevard N.C is known for it's white Squirrels. They aren't Albino but were brought to this area from overseas. The Camera was Nikon 6006 Shutter Priority On Automatic setting. I have to quess that the picture was taken in the early 1990's. :-\

The Algarve this time and this bedspread hanging out to dry in the sun, white against white apartment blocks. A bollard had been vandalised here with metal reinforcing bars trailing along the ground, tripped over one, managed not to fall, otherwise I'd have really gotten hurt.

Drew in Mist

My beloved husband of many years, and constant photo subject, once again modeling for me.  Here at Cone Manor along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Spring Fog.

[attachimg=#]
I'm sold out and committed to go all the way with Jesus.  He is my lord, and savior, and I love him because he first loved me.  The more I look to him, the more deeply I fall in love with him.  He has done marvelous things in me, and through me. I'm awesomely created in HIS image, and I'm filled with his spirit.  It's Christ in me, the hope of glory.  I'm a warrior, a victorious warrior, coming against powers and principalities and wickedness in high places. God has given us ALL things that pertain unto righteousness....hallelujah!  He's worthy to be praised, and worshiped and adored.

Siblings in the Rain

I found these two, of three young 'coons in an empty trash can, in the rain.  They'd managed to fall into the can, and couldn't get themselves out.  We turned the can on it's side so they could get out.  One ran out, but these two huddled together.  I shot a few pictures before they finally ventured out.  They were quite expressive!

This will be my last entry.  I guess it could be called Standing Still.

These standing dead and bare trees are so photographic.  We have a park called Empire Lakes (renamed John Toppit, I think).  In part of one of the lakes is a marshy area where these trees are in the water.  I don't know why they died.  I also have a picture of this area, with a bridge that goes out over the water and then ends. :)    I used B and W for this one, but the originals are in color.

This is my last entry. I thought it fitting to enter a picture Titled "Grampa Ralph." He is shown here with Debbie his Grand Daughter. Ralph is acually my Father In Law. He taught me a lot about Photography and actually would grade my pictures. This picture is in honor of him for all the help he gave. The picture was taken with a Nikon D80 on Shutter Priority mode with Fill Flash. This was at our House in Lawrenceville. It was our 2007 Thanksgiving get together.

B&W, what a great challenge. I look forward to all of the entries.

For me, this was hard to choose my 4 entries. Infrared B&W is one of my photographic passions, second only to India.

My entries are all in IR B&W. Just a quick lesson in IR film. Infrared photographs the IR near visible light. If you have a lens with a small red dot at the top of the lens, this is the focus point for IR films. I actually shoot IR with an opaque filter (Kodak 87C) over the lens. You compose, focus, and then put the filter over the lens. You then have to move the focus back to the red mark.

The first image is one of my favorite, and most popular. It is taken with a Nikon FE2, and Kodak HIE B&W IR film. This is actually my mother's back yard (which is for sale if anyone's interested ).  ;)

This one is titled "Dick's Bench". Dick was my mother's brother-in-law. He has since died of cancer. He used to sit on this bench and watch the porpoises swim up and down the tidal river in the background. A copy of this print hangs in his wife's home in Savannah.

Thanks for looking.

The next one was actually supposed to be a test.

I was testing a new film, macophot 120, which is no longer made.

It was shot on a Mamiya 645 AFD.

The white in the water is actually the algae on the top of the water. IR film produces foliage as white, and open blue sky as black. The clouds photograph very white as well.

Anyway, here is "Stone House Park"

This one is from my last photo safari. I went to South Carolina to work on my "Abandoned American" series. This is an ongoing personal project documenting different aspects of man made objects in various states of decay. In my series so far, I've photographed both the famous, such as Alcatraz Island, to the obscure, such as abandoned farms in South Carolina. This is where I found this abandoned railroad crossing.

It is called "Abandoned RR Crossing ~ McLeod Farms"

And my last entry.

This one is from my series on Route 66 through Arizona. Arizona boasts the most drivable miles left of the original Rte 66.

I spent a week driving up and down the entire state, and was able to drive every section of The Mother Road that is still open to the public. I was also able to drive one section that wasn't. I spent the entire time on that part of the road hoping the rancher didn't lock the gate.

This shot was photographed just east of where one of the old alignments of Rte 66 ends at the boundary of The Painted Desert/Petrified Forest. The road crosses Dead River Wash, which for a vast majority of the time is just a dry river bed. However, from evidence in the photo, there is plenty of water at times. It is usually during a flash flood.

These automobiles were buried by those floods. I wish I know why they were there. Many times in the past, vehicles were used to control erosion. Maybe that's how they got there. I had returned to this site about 2or 3 years ago, and found the vehicles have been rearranged by subsequent floods.

This one is titled "Dead River Wash #2 ~ Route 66, AZ". It was shot with my old trusty Nikon FE2, with Kodak HIE infrared film. Sadly, Kodak has discontinued this film this year.

Avoura

Over the last two days we have had some really great weather here in England, and I took the opportunity to get out to some picturesque places and take some photos.

I converted 3 of them into monochrome images, one sepia, two black and white, and also I have added an image from a while back of some chess pieces on a chessboard, which is an ideal subject when thinking of black and white.

1. Here is the first image: Antique Engine

Or click here to see the image on Flickr site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kingdavid/2469572730/

Taken on 5 May 2008, at Battlesbridge, a small village in rural England with a high concentration of antique centres. This old train engine was outside the first antique centre I came to.

2. Moored Boats

Or click here to see the image on Flickr site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kingdavid/2468753001/

Taken on 5 May 2008, at Battlesbridge. The boats are moored on the River Crouch. The building to the left is the Granary Antique and Craft Centre, and has one of the largest antique collections I have seen.

3. Riverside Crane

Or click here to see the image on Flickr site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kingdavid/2468755849/

This was taken in Burnham-on-Crouch, further East along the River Crouch, not far from the North Sea. This is an old crane that was on the side of the river. Taken on 4 May 2008.

4. Chess Game

Or click here to see the image on Flickr site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kingdavid/2468760451/

Just some chess pieces on a chess board, taken on 30 June 2007.

All images taken with a Canon Digital Ixus 60. I used Digikam software to convert the images to monochrome (available for free from http://www.digikam.org, for use with the Linux operating system, which is also free).

I'm going to give this a try.  This is a photo of my daughter, Olivia, during drama practice at church.  The name of our drama team is - F.I.R.E.  Fully Ignited Redeemed Eternally.  That is what is on their shirts.  FIRE on the front, and the whole name on the back.  So I've highlighted the name on the front.  I used an Olympus FE 220 Digital camera, and this was on Easter.

I'm posting one more, though not sure why when I see all the great photos already.

I think I'll call it, Have No Fear.[attachimg=#]

A beautiful spray of white orchids.....photo taken at a Rogers Gardens in Newport Beach, CA   I loved the "individual" spray...then I decided to turn it in to a kaleidoscope affect....and it came out very interesting

"Plum Blossoms"

My second entry was taken last spring in my back yard.  It's really pretty in color too, but I really like how it converted to B&W.  I took this one with my Canon EOS 20D, also.

"Days Gone By"

My third entry was taken with the same camera as the other photos, in 2007.  It was a cold, foggy day that lended itself well to the subject and the aged effect.

"Perfect Peace"

My last entry...

I shot this trumpeter swan in Wyoming a few years ago with the same camera, Canon EOS 20D.  I softened this photo and used a vignette effect in Photoshop CS2.  I love it because the swan doesn't seem to have a care in the world.  A picture of perfect peace.

I'm not sure if this challenge is still open for entries, but if not, just delete this, my fourth and final one. Thank you.

Taken late last summer with my Canon S3 IS while visiting my mother in my home town in Wi. This same underground spring has been gushing forth from that pipe in that local park since I was a child in the 1950's. (Ok, they've probably had to replace the pipe once or twice since then?)  What sweet memories it recalls! :)
It also reminds me of Jn. 7:38

I put my vote in. What day do we stop the voting? Have you decided yet?

No hurry Pat, I realize you're VERY busy these days.

Just wanted to say these are all beautiful.  It was really hard to decide, even with the option for 15.

Ok, I voted! Whew! An easy task, NOT!

There were soooo many great photos in this one.  I think Pat needs to pay us for judging this one.  ;)

I voted.  This one was fun.  And, yes, I think that the judging has now reached a level which requires such a high level of expertise that we should be able to charge for sharing this expertise with the world.  STRIKE!  STRIKE!   :ticked: :-X >:( :( :'( :clobber:

This was my first time to enter any kind of challange (contest). I must say it was a lot of fun and a challange to compete with professionals. I can hardly wiat for the next challange.

I would appreciate some feedback on how I can improve my photography, so I would like to hear from the members on how to do so.

Thanks,

I don't know if the voting is closed yet, but I agree with you about Dick's Bench ... I voted for that one too!

This is cool, when do I get my winner's check?  ;D

But seriously, thanks to everyone. This photo has special meaning for me, and I'm always humbled to find others like it too.

I think I have a really good idea for the next challenge.

Let me know what I need to do to announce it.

Thanks to all, and as always, Blessings to all!

P.S.

If there is another pro out there, I wouldn't mind sharing responsibility of moderating a photo critique thread, as per Papasmirf's post.  ~v~

Congratulations to the four top winners! I think most would agree that this challenge not only had the most entries numerically, but also the most technically and esthetically high-quality entries thus far.

Great Pictures and it was a great subject. Dick's Bench was not just a photo but it also told a story. The other winners were great also. It was a tuffy to choose from But I believe all the voters did a great job. Now! On to the next Challenge.

All I can say is "wow" at the beauty and quality of the submissions.  They've been a delight to behold! Honored to be in the top four!
