How to Use This Board

Here's our
Twenty Third Challenge for you all.

WEATHERED

Details:

  • This topic was chosen by Lee who won our  last Challenge.  The subject of the next  Mini Challenge is WEATHEREDLee says, "The dictionary meaning of "weathered" says,
    • Worn, stained, or warped by or as if by exposure to weather; seasoned.
    • Architecture Sloped to shed water.
    • seasoned by exposure to the weather
    • altered in color, texture, composition, or form by such exposure or by artificial means producing a similar effect
    Personally I think weathered could also be a person with a weathered face or someone who has weathered a difficult time in their life."

  • Use the attachment feature to show your photos (see directions above in the link to "How to Use This Board") in your post or link to them from your gallery or an offsite location that allows linking using the image codes.  If you have trouble, please contact a moderator (name in blue) or an administrator (name in red) and we'll help you post your photo.  If you have your photo in your gallery, please don't use the attachment feature as that puts the photo on our server twice but rather link to it.  It's best if your photos are at least 500 pixels wide so that they are easily seen.

  • Please upload up to 4 entries per member for this challenge.

  • The challenge is open now and will be closed to uploads on August 29, 2008   and then we'll vote on them.

  • Please tell us the camera you used to take your photo and when you took it.  Please only enter photos taken by you.

  • Please put a short title above your photo.  We need the title for the poll listing.

  • Please post only one entry per post.  .

  • Of course, we're going to see who is posting the photos so this is not an anonymous challenge.  So start posting.  Click on the "Reply" button below and start this challenge!
    Remember, this is a fun project!

Well I'll jump in first.   ;D I found this picture and just had to enter it. It's a Racoon that just made it through a terrible Thunderstorm. I had something else in mind. But I'm entering this one anyway. :laff: The Title is "Weathering The Storm."

"Adobe Paisaje"

[attachimg=#]

Boy, I really like what I'm seeing again for this challenge.

I'm too busy to go shoot for this one, so once again, I'm going back into my files.

I really love old buildings, and play an integral part of one of my personal projects. However, I'll only upload one of those.

This one is of an old adobe building I found in extreme southern Colorado. Its a three room adobe building, just off of the highway in Paisaje, CO. I shot if for my 2005 calendar.

Its called "Adobe Paisaje", appropriately enough.

Enjoy!

"Hagood Mill"

[attachimg=#]

And this one is a detail from an old waterwheel powered mill near my Great Grandparent's farm near Pickens, SC.

My dad used to go get ground corn meal for cornbread from this mill when it was still in operation commercially. Now it is preserved by the state of South Carolina as a heritage site. Last I heard, they still open it to grind corn into meal a few times a year.

This one is called "Hagood Mill".

"Man Alone"

[attachimg=#]

Of course I'm going to include some from India. After all, that is where a good-sized part of my heart lies.

This one is of an older gentleman who was watching us plant trees on the property of our new school building. The sky was very hazy (thus the monochrome background), but the sun came out for a few minutes, allowing me to get some really great shots of the people and the surroundings. This man definitely qualifies for "weathered".

The title is "Man Alone".

"Kinnu's Hands"

[attachimg=#]

And finally, one of my favorite people I've met in India, although, as with most Dalits (Untouchables), a sad story goes with her. I won't go into it now. Soon I'll be writing some stories about my week in the Delhi slums this last February. I'll let y'all know when and where their posted.

Kinnu (the lady who belongs to these hands) is a midwife in Sangam Park, which is a colony of street sweepers (Balmiki) in Delhi. She is 80 years old, and has been a midwife for 60 years, ever since she was taught by here mother-in-law. She has birthed many, many babies in Sangam Park.

She charges about 1500 Rupees for male babies, and about 1/2 that for female babies. If the family is unable to pay that much, she adjusts her fee accordingly.

Anyway, without writing a novel, I'll just say she tries not to deliver many babies anymore, but many in the colony still insist she deliver their baby. After all, Kinnu probably delivered the parents anyway.

Here is "Kinnu's Hands".

Back in the Day

"Back in the day"I perfer to view this with the 12 kids running around the house and hanging out the window while mom and dad are on front porch with grandpa and grandma. perhaps a tire swing in the front somewhere. Although the memories are made up and a house may weather but family memories never will.

"Weathered Upon"
I do believe I may be deviating from the implied meaning of this subject (lol) but, I like it so... and it does have the word weather in it.
We had just got to a weekend Christian Music festival in MN and it may be called Sonshine Festival but it was nothing of the sort for most of it, still a wonderful time.
This was taken with a Canon 20D at 1/320 at 5.6, ISO of 800"Sonshine 07 417 (20)wb"

This shot shows remnants of our son's old wooden monkey bar playset that my husband built for him when he was just a toddler (he's now almost 10yo!).  We took down the playset last summer but still have the scrap pieces of wood laying around in our backyard.    :)

I know...my titles aren't the most creative, but I try!  :D  This shot is the rear bumper of my husband's old 1979 Ford F250 truck.  I actually like the look of the rusted metal -- gives it character!  :)

Swamp Cabin

[attachimg=#]

This old cabin is in the Okeefenokee Swamp.  My grandmother lived out in the woods, much like this.  She kept the yard swept, like it is here, in order to see if anything crawled up at night (snakes particularly).  There were a lot of "critters and varmets" that would come up and sneak into the house.

You may be familiar with driftwood beach at Jekyll Island.  We spent some time there a couple of years ago.  It is one of my favorite places and it is beautiful.  Here is a sample.  The trees are on the beach and they didn't drift up, they were growing there and the elements have taken a toll.

Hi,

I've voted.  And this is how I chose.  If you stuck to the theme, I had your picture in my sights!  After that it was easy.

Midori and I had our first long vacation in years. And after we returned, I had scheduled hernia surgery (a week ago last Monday).  And that is why I wasn't able to participate in this challenge.

Congrats. to LakeLady (I knew that her shot would be somewhere up there on the trophy table) and also to the other winners, and thank you to everyone who took the time and effort to enter your images.

They were all enjoyable photos but the competition is definitely getting tougher and tougher each new challenge contest.

I agree with Steve - give us over-60 seniors a 3-4 point handicap.  :tiredtread:

Thanks for your comments.  I belong to a couple of photography communities, but this one is so much fun.  I have enjoyed the challenges a lot.  It is also a such a great place to get an uplift.
