How to Use This Board

Here's our
40th Challenge for you all.

"Your Best Shot of 2009"

Details:

  • This topic was chosen by Don, who won our  last Challenge.
He explains:  "My selection for the next challenge is simple. I want to see your best shot of 2009. The subject matter can be what ever you want, no photos before 2009 please. So go search your photos and find that great shot!"

  • Use the attachment feature to show your photos (see directions above in the link to "How to Use This Board") in your post or link to them from your gallery or an offsite location that allows linking using the image codes.  If you have trouble, please contact a moderator (name in blue) or an administrator (name in red) and we'll help you post your photo.  If you have your photo in your gallery, please don't use the attachment feature as that puts the photo on our server twice but rather link to it.  It's best if your photos are at least 500 to 600 pixels wide so that they are easily seen.  Please keep your photos under 175 KB in size.

  • Please upload up to 4 entries per member for this challenge.

  • The challenge is open now and will be closed to uploads on January 14, 2010  and then we'll vote on them.

  • Please tell us the camera you used to take your photo and when you took it.  Please only enter photos taken by you.

  • Please put a short title above your photo.  We need the title for the poll listing.  If you want to tell us a bit about your photos, please put it below your picture.

  • Please post only one entry per post/message.

  • Of course, we're going to see who is posting the photos so this is not an anonymous challenge.  So start posting.  Click on the "Reply" button below and start this challenge!
Remember, this is a fun project!

QuoteDon, how do I check to find out what my resolution is, and/or how do I change it (keeping in mind that I'm very nearsighted?) :( .

Minimize all open windows to get to desktop.  Right click and choose properties (xp) or personalize (vista).  Then choose display settings.  You will then see a slider that goes from low to high.  The lowest setting will be something like 800x600.  I'm on a 24" with the resolution set to it's highest at 1920x1200.  If you are passionate about photography, I highly recommend the highest setting along with a good monitor calibration kit. (link provided is what I use)

Now that the highest resolution is set, which is good for us photography buffs.  Another adjustment that can be made to help with reading this forum and the net in general, is Ctrl and mouse scroll.  While holding the Ctrl key down use the scroll wheel on your mouse and roll it up or down to adjust to your liking.

Another step would be to use the Firefox browser instead Internet Explorer.  Firefox also offers a "web developers toolbar", you are not required to be a developer or need the skills of such to use it.  HERE is a quick little tutorial.  A very niffty tool that is offered is "Resize".  So, even on my 24" I was able to see that the problem with the boards and the scrolling issue is at 800x600.  There is still a little bit of scroll at 1024x768.  No scrolling at 1280x1024 or larger.

Hope this helps.

WOW, what a hard challenge! It has been hard looking back on the year that was, but it was lots of fun. :)

All the entries/non-entries are exceptionally good, it's sure going to be a hard task voting.

Kevin, that Daurian Redstart image is brilliant. I bet you were happy snapping that. The movement in the wings is awesome, and the composition is just fantastic.

Well, here's my entries, it has been a hard choice.

When does voting end. It doesn't say at the beginning of the Challenge like it use to.

Fotobirder, at the top of the poll it says voting will end at 11:04 tonight.  And in Don's post just above yours, he says it will close on the 21st. That time is EST, so anyone who hasn't voted yet had better hurry!  :D

Congratulations all!

These are wonderful photos.  I had a difficult time choosing.

I can imagine the time each of you had going through pictures to pick out your 4 best.

I loved your picture, Kathleen. It was one of those pictures that spoke to me by just viewing it.  As for Kevin, he has the most beautiful Flower and Butterfly pictures but Jeane Lee hung right in there with that Christmas Cactus Blossom. As for Pixel, what a wonderful composition on leading Lines. It was one I left out on my original tally but added it after studying it closer. Juanitial's Picture was one that I've tried but not captured as well as you did. And Barbarians Green-back Heron was right up my Alley. You composed it just right. Hope I didn't leave anyone out. And a big Thanks to Jeannie and Don for doing such a great job. This is for all of you. :groupwave: :groupwave: :cp: :cp: :grouphug: :grouphug:

Congratulations to all the winners!

So many wonderful photos were entered and I am truly honored by my image being voted for by so many that it would place first, and among such an excellent group of entries.  Wow!  What a blessing.  Thank you all for your votes for, and kind words about my image.

Congratulations to all who entered.   It's not an easy thing to put such a personal part of ourselves out there.  As we all try to take better photos and glorify our Father, let us continue to encourage and help one another to improve, through our comments, tips and critique.

Scotty, if you keep practicing and improving as you have been...it won't be long before you win a challenge!  Keep seeing, keep shooting, and have fun!

I wasn't prepared to win first place, so I'm not ready with a new topic for the next challenge, but it will be forthcoming.

Thanks again, all!

Kudos to all the winners and runners-up! I figured either Daddy's Hand of Fall Muted would take the trophy! There were many other great shots in this challenge also. Very enjoyable!
