How to Use This Board









Details:   

• Show us your best photos representing  "S-CURVE" for this challenge.  Could be a path, or a roadway or something in nature or in your home. Here is an opportunity to come up with some fascinating and creative pictures! Think about your photo show us some "S-Curves"!   

• Use the attachment feature to show your photos (see directions above in the link to "How to Use This Board") in your post or link to them from your gallery or an offsite location that allows linking using the image codes.  If you have trouble, please contact a moderator (name in blue) or an administrator (name in red) and we'll help you post your photo.  If you have your photo in your gallery, please don't use the attachment feature as that puts the photo on our server twice but rather link to it.    

• Please upload up to 4 entries per member for this challenge.    

• The challenge is open now and will be locked to uploads on Saturday, September 30, 2006 and then we'll vote on them.    

• Please put a title in your post for your photos.  We need the title for the poll.   

• Of course, we're going to see who is posting the photos so this is not an anonymous challenge.  So start posting.  Click on the "Reply" button below and start this challenge!

Here's my first entry:

Great start to an interesting challange.  I like both of these photos for very different reasons.  Happy S-Shape hunting!

Neither one of Anna's photos show for me.

Photography Cafe is down right now. 

I guess today is not the right tomorrow! 

Hmmmmm  They show okay for me.   

Third attempt; still no photos.  I right clicked, clicked on show picture; still get the X.

Not showing here in Japan, either, but I was aware the Photography Cafe was down.

An "S" curve...  I wonder what kind of position I could get Jazz into and how long he would hold it for me

Re Anna's missing photos, we'll get it straightened out and in the meantime, let's get our entries in.  Photography Cafe crashed and so that's why the photos aren't showing as that's where they were linked to.

I don't see Anna's photos either.
Also, when I tried Copying & Pasting one of Marilyn's photos as an attachment in the "Shutter Clicks" thread, I kept getting this message:
" img].
You cannot upload that type of file. The only allowed extensions are txt,jpg,gif,pdf,mpg,png.", even though it HAS a jpg extension, & I put [ img] (without that space) before the url &[ /img] (also without that space) after it. Is that also because of the P. Cafe crash, or why? Thanks

Excuse me for interjecting photography theory, but I always thought the S-curve concept was the use of curved lines to emphasize composition and not just a "find Waldo" exercise to see an S.  Or did I misunderstand the object of this challenge?

Your're probably right, but since nearly all of us here are amateur photographers, we are just having fun with the S curve idea.  Why don't you post some REAL S curves and explain them to us?  Thanks!

Janet,  I'm just an amateur trying to learn more and take better pictures too.

If you look at AnnaBanana's first two entries and my entry (and there are others here, as well.  I just didn't go beyond the first 3 posted), you'll see examples of using an S curve in composition.  Photographic (and art) composition depends on several elements of design, either alone or combined, to give the composition appeal to the eye.  One of those design elements is line.  Line is probably the strongest of the elements of design (line, shape, form, texture, pattern, color).  A line can be long or short, thick or thin.  It can lead you away or move you forward.  It can be felt as restful, rigid, active, soothing, or threatening.  In nature, curved lines dominate -- wind, rivers, roads, surf, sanddunes, hills.

THE ‘S’ CURVE line goes further than just a plain ‘curved line. It is called the ‘Line Of Beauty”. It is elastic, variable and combines charm and strength. It has perfect grace and perfect balance. You have seen this ‘S’ Curve hundreds of times in drawings and paintings and other works of art.

Examples: the double curve of a river makes an ‘S’ curve. A path, row of trees or bushes that curve one way and then the other way create the ‘S’ curve. Look at the swoop of grace in Anna's flower or Etta Sue's pelican.  Look for this type of design and use it in your photos to add interest and beauty. Often it is subtle -- look at the example of the S curve in this article on composition

Thanks--helpful information.

(Actually the same principles we use in art.  And I am aware of it more while painting than while taking photos.)  But I will start looking for the elements of design while taking pictures, too.  Better late than never!

Thanks for that explanation Carl.  I've heard those things before when my artist wife spoke of them, but I definitely don't go around thinking about them very often!  So your explanation is helpful.

As usual, there are many good shots, and of course they add up to more than the three we can vote for!
