I am wanting to purchase a flash for my new camera but not sure what to get. I cant afford much but I really do need to get one. Anyone have any suggestions on what to buy since I have never purchased an xternal flash before. I need one for my hotshoe. I dont want a slave.

I would recommend staying with the Canon EX models so that you can take advantage of the ETTL II your camera is capable of using.  The 430EX will likely provide sufficient power, but the 580EX provides more power and features.

I agree, the 580 is the way to go.  However, if you are on a tight budget, the 380 or 430 will do for most circumstances.  You should be able to find a good, used one for a bargain on eBay.  Buy from a seller with no negatives and you'll likely come away with a good flash for very little dough.

But really, if you can do it, the 580 should be the number one choice.
