Title: Model Release Questions for Pros
Post by: bhdc on November 16, 2011, 09:21:49 AM
Hi guys. I have a question about model releases. Recently I have shot college hockey for a magazine. I was wondering if I needed a model release to use these photographs in a portfolio or an online portfolio to get assignments.

If you are not selling prints or they are used in media that would be construed as "news", you don't need a signed release.  However, if at some point you decide you want to use them in a commercial endeavor such as advertising or directly selling the photos, you need to have a release.  I would suggest getting a release signed now, while you may still be able to track down the people, so if at some point in the future you decide to use them, you are covered.
