This is a beautiful butterfly. 

Any idea of what kind of butterfly it is?

I believe this one is called the painted lady butterfly.   I used to know them all, but then my career went in another direction.

Borrer and White's Field Guide to Insects.   It covers only North America north of the Rio Grande.   Not a bad price, and a lot of fun, if you travel, and want to know.  I have a copy that's about 35 years old, and it's still fun to use.

I will lookup that book in the library.  Kassie is really into nature things.  She found a catterpillar and it has spun its cocoon.  The girls also have some monarch catterpillars one of which is ready to cocoon.  We studied them in science this year.
