Cooking with herbs opens up a whole new world of tastes and subtle variations in staple menu items.  The cost is little, the rewards great.

Best Basic Salad Dressing

1 tablespoon imitation bacon bits or 1 strip bacon, cooked and crumbled
½ teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried parsley or 1 tablespoon fresh, chopped parsley
½ teaspoon freeze-dried chopped chives
½ teaspoon salt or salt substitute
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 clove garlic, cut in half (optional)
3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar or wine vinegar or lemon juice
½ cup cooking oil or 1/4 cup cooking oil and 1/4 cup olive oil

Measure vinegar in 1-cup measuring cup or ½-pint jar with lid; then add all ingredients except oil and mix very well.  Add oil, mix well, and refrigerate.

Makes 1 cup.
