JennyW: Hello Everyone! I really miss activity on this site. I've been discouraged by photography sites where you have to sort through so much explicit content in order to see photos that truly glorify God. I'd love to see this site pick up again. 2023-05-16, 08:46:36

MY GRANDMOTHER warned me she planned to paint the door and doorjamb of her 1970s-style duplex. Arriving for a visit, I noticed she had posted a sign "Wet paint. Still tacky."
Underneath, someone had added: "Actually, the '70s are back in style now."

While waiting for my ride to Penna. : I wandered to Charles Stanley site.

What a great message --quite lengthy--but I wanted to share it with you all.

Hope this is the right place to post it:

Following Christ
Matthew 4:18-23

Follow Me;

It is such a simple statement, but it requires a great commitment on the part of the believer. When we heed Christ;s call, we must recognize several requirements in following Him:

Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.

God has given us a permanent, indwelling source of guidance and strength: the Holy Spirit. Recognize His role as Teacher and Helper in your life. (John 14:26)

Service.

We cannot follow Christ without serving others. Remember, Christ came as the ultimate expression of godly service, and we must model our lives on that example. (Matthew 20:26)

Sacrifice.

We must give God what He asks of us or we cannot live within His will. The successful Christian life is not a matter of being ;first; instead, it involves a willingness to be last in the eyes of the world. (Mark 9:35)

Self-denial.

A faithful follower of Christ is more concerned with others than with himself. And, standing for Christ in a fallen world requires a bold separation of self from the world;a step that many refuse to take. (Matthew 16:24)

Suffering.

We cannot serve others without sharing in their suffering. True, no one likes to suffer, but even more than that, no one likes to suffer alone. (Philippians 4:10)

There is no specific ;recipe for living the successful Christian life, other than walking step-by-step with the Savior and allowing Him to live in and through us. (Galatians 2:20)

Ask God today to help you stay in step with Jesus Christ.

Bless you all,

Love in CHrist,
Joyce

Carol

Joyce:  Your post is much appreciated.  Thanks

Pat Scott:  No, we are not moving.  In fact, we are doing a little work around here enjoying it so much.  Why do you have a summer cold when it is only springtime here?

Ruth:  I like your new picture.

Judy:  I will tell Don - he isn't having much artheritis pain - he is having hand surgery in June.  So happy that the fall did not do any great damage to you either.  Congratulations on 45 years.  The book you mentioned - Cassie Bernal (spelling?) - our oldest son lives in the house the Bernal family lived in when Cassie was involved with the wrong teens.  When there was all the media hype, I was staying there and loads of flowers appeared all the time - from Larry King show to Oprah, you name it so we had a neighbor who knew the family take the flowers over to the Bernall home.  I always wonder if I am staying in her bedroom.  I don't believe that the wild teens are in the neighborhood - we haven't seen any.  Since three sons live in Littleon, all of them were acquainted in some way with family members and so forth and one lives close to the high school.  Everyone dreads when it is mentioned over and over on television and particularly by politicians.

Etta Sue:  Don loves the Chines buffets too.

Larry:  Sorry about your friend, Tom and what is to come for the family.  Good to see that you are better.  Carol

Thanks, Carol.

I was wondering if I should keep it here or maybe Pat will move my post to Manna for the Soul.

Leave that "major" decision to Pat--our Leader.
Love the girl; she is so thoughtful--the best.

Janet--looks like you beat me and my hubby be a few months--our 45th will be in November.

Time sure flies when you are having fun !!!

Take care, all.

Grand daughter called ; van is already and they are on their way to pick me up.

Back around Monday night.

Love in Christ,
Joyce

People of character have both the strength and grace to give their
best to the world.

To their enemy they give forgiveness.
   To an outsider, understanding.
   To a friend, their heart.
To their children, a good example.
   To their mates, faithfulness.
   To their parents, respect.
   To themselves, gentleness.
   To all people, kindness.

Strong roots produce a strong character. And a strong character is
needed to give one's best to life. When the tree's roots are well
tended, the leaves will be full and healthy.

Hi Everyone  ;D

Ms Robson:
Sacrifice.
The successful Christian life is not a matter of being ;first; instead, it involves a willingness to be last in the eyes of the world.
<-----  ??? so it is ok to know His word is strange, yes?

The Devotional:
How sad that we might be guilty of counting His Word as a strange thing too.

Mieka:  ;D
Please forgive me, but I do find MANY of these words a strange things to do too.

So is it then sad that we might see His word as strange at times?

Or is it ok that everyone will see His word as strange at times, but the ones who believe, will follow them any way???

This Devotional today is a puzzle to me. I need to learn it. :-\

And A Hi ms Janet  ;D

Etta Sue

I am back home again.  I just about did a bonker this morning.  Ivalou's surgery was at 7am.  I got up at 5am.  Two hours.  I got ready and sat down here at the computer.  I heard a horn blow.  The driver was here.  I forgot we had to get from here to the surgery center and that takes an hour.  Thank God, all I had to do was grab my purse, turn on the security and lock the door!!!  And this is a person that prides herself in NOT being late to anything!!!!

Ivalou got her left cataract out and implant in today.  When we got back, we got in my car and went out to eat.  She said she was a little fuzzy yet from the medicine so she was going home and watch TV and fall asleep.  Just what the doctor ordered.   ;D  Her appointment tomorrow is at 9am.  Maybe I should get up at 6am to have 2 hours before leaving... ??? ???

Janet, glad you got back home safe.

Papa John ~ Have a safe trip to the wedding and back.

Jane ~ Good to see you here this morning.

Joyce ~ Have fun in Pennsylvania playing tennis...

Hi Mieka!!!   ;) ;)  Oh, by the way.  The devotional this morning...My Contemporary English Version Bible stated Hosea 8:12 My instructions for sacrifices were written in detail, but you ignored them.  Maybe that will take the strangeness out .... ;)

Jen, Glad to see you post.  You were missed.

Larry, good to know you are feeling better.  I will have Tom in my prayers.

Carol ~ Maybe we can have Chinese Buffet in Calgary!

Pat ~ Good afternoon....I see you are online.

Marilyn ~ Glad your finger is all better (as Tony used to say).  Can't have a bum finger when typing on a keyboard.   ;)

Sonja ~ I tried and tried for the Lunar Moonar Eclipse but I didn't get it.  I sure hope I can save yours.

I feel a nap coming on.

We have SO many different Bibles now  :'(

And it says in the Bible that whosoever adds or takes away from God's word will be damned.
??? ???

Which one is ok? How do I know it?

I am going to have to allow someone else to answer you on this Meika as I know virtually nothing about these things.

I have been trying to get online all afternoon, but I was unable to get a connection.  It is bedtime for me now and just wanted to say goodnight.  I have read all of the messages, but feel a bit too tired to answer them.

God bless all and I look forward to your fellowship tomorrow.

Anthony.

Al Moak

Mieka - we have many Bibles because the original languages were not English.  They were Greek and Hebrew.  Since English has changed over many years, some people have felt we needed new translations to keep up with the modern English.  I did a special study while at Seminary on the translations, and my opinion, first of all, is that all of the English versions (except the New World version) are really quite good.  The best for accuracy, though, is probably the New King James Version.

Papa John

This is for Miss Mieta.  If I am Mr. Papa John then you are Miss Mieta.  OK?  Al has answered well your last question so I will try to pick up on your earlier one. ;D

I think the meaning of  Hosea 8:12 is also made clearer in the New International Version as well as the New Living Translation..

Hosea 8:12  I wrote for them the many things of my law, but they regarded them as something alien.  (NIV)

Hosea 8:12  Even though I gave them all my laws, they act as if those laws don't apply to them. (NLT)

In this prophetic book Hosea is saying that both Israel and Judah had turned away from God's word.  This is one of the major messages in the prophets of the Old Testament.

Now, read the devotional again.  It shouldn't be hard to understand.

"God spoke to Israel through Hosea. Therefore her sins and apostasy could not be excused by ignorance.   In like manner, God has given us His Word, this special revelation from Himself to His people.   How tragic that we neglect it!   As God's people today, let us value and respond to His Word.   How sad that we might be guilty of counting His Word as a strange thing too." ---Donald Norbie

This shouldn't be hard to understand.  Today we have the gospel.  We have the New Testament.  It is sad when people reject it.  Why is it sad?  Because,  "How shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.  Heb 2:3  (NIV)

--- Papa John    ;D          <:))))><<

Eph 2:8-9  For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast.(NIV)

Thank you Papa John for you explainations, I always look forward to reading what you both say. Personally I have 7 translations of the full Bible and  2-3 new Testaments in other translations. I like to read them all at times for a better understanding of what I have a question about. I also use Mathew Henry's commentary  and the Strong's Bible Dictionary in english, greek and hebrew. If I am still having a prolbem.

Etta Sue

Thank you Papa John for a great explaination.

When I was first reading the Bible, I didn't understand some of what I was reading.
I was really getting frustrated because I was reading where the Holy Spirit is to help us understand.  I did some serious praying and my niece gave me the Contemporary English Version.  Now I understand it.  I know the KJV is probably the most accurate but, for me, when I read it, it is like reading an insurance policy.  Just words that have no meaning to me.  I get my CEV out.  Read it and then read KJV again and it is understandable.

I believe that whatever version that gives you a better understanding is what you should read.

And I do like to read different versions.  I have KJV, NIV, NLT and CEV.  I read all of them.

Jane Walker

Etta Sue, you said:
QuoteI know the KJV is probably the most accurate but,
but I'm going to say "it was probably accurate for that time ... when it was translated into English for King James.  There has been so much change in the language and the meaning of words since then though... Each translation is an attempt to bring the language of the Bible into a more easily understood version.  Actually, if you could get hold of the Amplified Bible, you would have a much closer look at the meaning of the original language of the scriptures.  It is just what the title implies "amplified" ... many words, sometimes, are needed to fully explain the Greek.

Y'all take care ... I really don't have a lot of time to be sitting here but I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to stick my two cents worth in the pot!    :P
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass .... it's about learning to dance in the rain!

Jeanne Lee

I have several translations, too.  And I often use three or four of them for the same passage, especially if something sounds obscure.  Seeing the same verse stated in a slightly different way can usually clear it up for me.  Jane, I agree the Amplified is really helpful by adding parenthetical explanations.  I was led to that from watching and listening to Joyce Meyer - it's the one she uses all the time and I like to follow while she's teaching.

Gene's daughter Vivien and her husband Richard are going to be visiting this weekend, but instead of staying with us as originally planned, they'll be staying again in that house with the beautiful fireplace.  It's just a few mintues away from us and they'll be here for dinner and will go to church with us on Sunday.

Personally, I love the King James Version.  There's a poetic sound to it when reading and I use the New King James when I have a problem with it.

I really liked it when we used to read in unison in churches but now with all of the various versions, that's almost impossible to do.

It's nice to see you, Jeanne!

Well I am here changing the subject. After I got home from work I changed into shorts and at T-shirt and laid down to rest for about 30 minutes, then got up and fixed me a big salad of mixed greens, onions and tofu with greek salad dressing. That was sure good. It is 6:30 PST and still 85 F. At work today I banged my right knee cap on the desk and it sure does hurt. That is the knee I have had problems with in the past, it seems like every time I fall- I fall on that knee. :-\ :-\ Well I am going to catch up on my reading here and will be bak later.

Hello everybody....

Sorry I haven't been around much.  I've been busy busy busy busy.  This real world stuff kinda gets in the way sometimes, ya know what i mean?

I find the translation discussions interesting.  Here in the buckle of the Bible belt (hahahaha), there are churches that have put King James in their name.  Emmanuel King James Baptist church.  (That is just an example).  They literally believe that if you read anything besides the KJV, you are headed straight to hell.  I heard a preacher say one time that we needed to be reading the original Bible, and all these others (say this next word with a sneer) translations were just fakes.  I so wanted to stand up and ask him if he knew how to read Greek and Hebrew.  :-[  I don't want to knock anyone's intelligence, but the KJV is a translation too, you know what I mean.

Having said that, I am like Pat.  I like the poetic nature of the KJ, but I now use a NKJ as my primary source because it is easier to understand and I can cover more ground if you will.  I also found that it as handier when teaching youth, etc.  I like the NIV as well.  I have a "Contemporary Parallel Bible somewhere"  It is about 4 feet thick (just kidding, but it is big) and it has 4 versions next to each other.

Anyway.  I do think that some translations are better than others, but if you use one of the common ones (KJV, New KJ, NIV, etc.) I don't think there is a great deal of difference.  (Karmat recognizes that some would see her as an apostate for that remark.)

Have a good night.  I am in and out adn may post again! ;D

I forgot to tell y-all that I carry my KJV in the car and use it at church. My pastor uses the NIV and Peggy uses the NKJV. I like my KJV because it has the pronunciations of those names that everyone I know mispronounces. I like the way it flows if you know what I mean, but in my every day reading I prefer a different translation. My KJV is so marked up and underlined that you would think I have had it for years actually only 3.I wore out my NKJV that was given to me 5 years ago when I got saved and the Pastor of my old church gave me a new one. It is very nice and I used to carry it around in the box but someone at church gave me a Bible cover.

Now I am going to have to get an Amplified version.... ;)

I like these discussions.  My church uses the NIV on the overhead.  It is really neat when you hear the words from the minister and see the words on the overhead.  The minister prints his sermon out and the couple on PowerPoint put emphasis on the overhead that the minister has highlighted.  Almost like everyone has a handout of the sermon.  Also the sermons are taped and free audio tapes are offered for shut-ins, etc.

I wish they would tape the music but there is something about copywrites that our church won't audio or video music.  When we have the words on the overhead, we have to put the copywrite symbol and its information somewhere on the bottom of one of the pages.

TMI....too much information....sorry!

Marilyn

I think I am going to say good night. I have a busy day tomorrow. I have my weekly cleaning to do, more packing, pick up commodities, drive into Apple valley to Walmart to get another pair of jeans and some TP and dog food, then we may be having choir practice because we didn't practice last night. Our main guitar player was still on vacation.
I didn't sleep allthat well last night so will go to bed early tonight. I usually go to bed around 9 pm and watch TV in there until 10- or so and cuddle and love on the dogs for awhile. I love on them all the time but they like to snuggle with me before we go to sleep. ;D

So Good Night All.
