Morning Devotional...

Heavenward by Scotty Smith

It's Time for Personal Retreat with Jesus

My beloved speaks and says to me: "Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come away." Song of Songs 2:10

Lord Jesus, the evidence is clear and convicting. It's time for un-rushed, uncluttered, Spirit-kissed time with you. Emotional tiredness and wandering thoughts, more being busy than beholding your beauty, quicker irritation than lingering adoration... but above every indicator, you tell us it's time to seek your face--to come away to be with you.

What a Lord, what a Savior, what a Bridegroom... you say to us, "Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come away." That you address us as "my love, my beautiful one," is astonishing. The only beauty we have is what you've given us--the robe of your righteousness, our hiddenness in you, and your life in us. But what a magnificent supply this is. Thank you for your kindness and generosity.

That you desire rich, intimate time with us is life-giving. Jesus, it's hard to live as a Mary in a Martha world (Luke 10:38-42). Obligations, distractions, empty-nothings, and crises all conspire to crowd you out. That's a confession of sin, an excuse.

Since our calendars tell the real story, and our schedules are the measure of our sincerity, we will make time for you--you, the One who loves and delights in us as none other; the One who is the Lord of all time and space; the One whom to know is eternal life; the One who prays for our joy and who is our peace.

Jesus, in these last weeks of August, speak to us afresh; renew our affection for you; center and settle us... by your Word and through your creation, in stillness and aloneness, in tears and laughter; in our brokenness and by your beauty. So very Amen we pray, in your great and grace-full name.

Pat, how wonderful to see a devotional from you.  I hope it means that your health is starting to improve - at least a lttle.

Thank you for the very timely message from Scotty Smith.  We do certainly need to keep close to Jesus in all of our "ups and downs".

Hi, friends,

I went out for a little while today, but got sick and had to return home in a rush.

Ah, well, there will be another day.  That's one of the joys of retirement.

Thank you for the devotion, Pat. I have been reading other comments about passages from Song of Solomon, so it was interesting to read your contribution.

May God be with each of you this evening.

Love,
Ruth Ann

YESTERDAY TODAY AND TOMORROW

There are two days in every week
about which we should not worry,
Two days which should be kept free of fear and apprehension.

One of these days is YESTERDAY,
With its mistakes and cares,
Its faults and blunders,
Its aches and pains.
YESTERDAY has passed forever beyond our control.

All the money in the world cannot bring back YESTERDAY.
We cannot undo a single act we performed;
We cannot erase a single word we said.
YESTERDAY is gone.

The other day we should not worry about is TOMORROW
With its possible adversities, its burdens, its larger promise.
TOMORROW is also beyond our immediate control.

TOMORROW, the sun will rise,
Either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds,
But it will rise.
Until it does, we have no stake in TOMORROW
For it is as yet unborn.

This leaves only one day TODAY.
Any man can fight the battles of just one day.
It is only when you and I add the burdens of those two awful eternities
YESTERDAY and TOMORROW
That we break down.

It is not the experience of TODAY that drives men mad.
It is remorse or bitterness for something which happened YESTERDAY
And the dread of what TOMORROW may bring.

Let us, therefore, live but ONE day at a time.

Hi everyone. It looks like we are in for another cloudy day with a higher percentage chance of rain throughout the day and evening than for the last couple of days.  The prediction is a high of 81 degrees today and that is most welcome.  Nothing on the schedule for today until this evening when we are going to go to the buffet at Pizza Hut.

I got up at 6:30 this morning and took my shower and shaved and got ready for the day.  Then I laid back down and did my daily reading, including reading the postings in the discussions I follow each day.  About 8 am I finally got up and got busy in the kitchen and have that work done.  Last evening Pat made pancakes and sausage for our evening meal, something we hadn't done for a long time.

Janet, I hope the rented house will work out well for the three girls.  I hope she is successful in finding the job she is looking for. It sounds like those pictures were extremely expensive that were taken for the Church directory.  I shudder everytime I read about implanting chips into humans.  I suppose if you have no knowledge of the Bible or are not a believer many people wouldn't think there was anything wrong with this.  Unfortunately once this takes off it will infiltrate businesses and to be employed you will need this to access your work place.  It sounds like the young man wasn't really serious about learning to paint.  We all have the same 24 hours and usually find time to do those things that are important to us.  We have a metal roof over our back patio so when we have rain we also hear the noise.

Jackie, many of our young people are in for a rude awakening when they actually have to get out in the real world and try to earn a living.  They are being sheltered in our Universities lest they hear or see something that might offend them.  I always thought higher education was to prepare us for our future life and to broaden our views of the world not to wrap us in cotton.  I see in the article you linked that your Health and Safety Executive holds a similar view.

Marilyn, did that large cat try to do a little typing as you typed?  :)  I hope your local shelter benefited from your activities on Sunday at the Farm Store.

Carol, it sure shortens the morning when we sleep in late (but don't ask me how I know it).  For years I have had short afternoons since I try to lay down and rest every afternoon if possible.  Those were good suggestions for Jackie.  Even those many months my wife wasn't up to attending Sunday School and Church she was able to do the card ministry for our Sunday School class.  It was something she could do from home.

Jackie, good for you in volunteering to do another Bible reading.  I know you worried a bit about the last one but didn't it turned out to be an enjoyable thing to do?  Your piece about "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" are right on and is one of the foundations of the Al-Anon program.  Unfortunately it was pretty late in my life before I learned this lesson but what a difference it has made as I try to stay in today.

Pat, thanks for getting us started for a new month.  That is a very good reading you shared.  I sure hope you are beginning to feel better.

Jeanne and Ruth Ann, thanks for your postings.  Ruth Ann, I hope today finds you over the sickness that you experienced yesterday.

...yes she does...I am sure this was the same lady who was speaking on our early morning tv, yesterday or the day before...she is against all this cotton wool smothering of our young children....she says we must concentrate on the " real " dangers...

Well once again I have to rest my body, it really doesn't take much to mess it up...I took the hoover - vacuum into my bedroom to clean inside my carpeted wardrobe, so had to empty it first of shoes, boots and bags...I noticed in the corner at the back a triangle dark looking mouldy patch, I tried to get low but couldn't reach the back, holding a soapy sponge in my hand but had to give up, I was losing my balance...and I certainly wasn't prepared to get on my knees, my body by that time was heavy, my head dizzy, and my legs although heavy were getting like jelly, wobbly underneath me, my lower stomach was heavy and pulling down, so I gave up as I was back to walking like a puppet on string..now of course I am back to resting my body until it gets back to its usual MS way...

It is so n ice to see4 a post from you, Pat. How are you feeling any progress on your condition?

All is well here. Keith seems to be alright most of the time, however, from time to time there is some little thing that is not quite right. I put his blood pressure pills on the table in front of his placemat so he will remember to take them all was fine until Saturday when he looked at me and asked "Am I supposed to take these pills? I told him "yes just one from each bottle".
He takes two pills at bedtime and I hand those to him with a glass of water each night. He has been working in the yard doing some odd jobs that have needed doing for quite some time so that is a good sign, he is not just sitting around doing nothing.

Freckles and I have a few days off, tomorrow we visit the Cancer Center, that is all she has to do this week. Next week is going to be hectic. I have two visits with Freckles, Keith needs to get a hair cut and a new pr of shoes and I have to get things packed up for the trip next weekend for the wedding. We are going to have to leave very early in the morning as there are millions of visitors come to Oregon to view the eclipse and the traffic is going to be horrific. It would normally take about 3.5 hours to get where we need to go, but with so much traffic on the road, it could take all darn day. The wedding is the day of the eclipse so there is no staying home. It is Keith's youngesat son who is getting married.

Whew!  I'm tired!  We ate ham and beans with cornbread for lunch at the senior center, so knew we needed to get some exercise this afternoon, as tonight the Mennonite Youth are serving us hamburgers, salads and home made ice cream!  :) Yum!  So we went out and weeded the garden, and believe me, that is exercise.  My back, legs and arms are all hurting.  Some of it is from the gym workout this morning, though, can't blame all of it on the weeding.  ;)

Beth's friend Mindi is coming to see her tomorrow and wants to see me, too, so that's nice.  Maybe we will all go to lunch together or something.  (I know--eat, eat, eat, right?)   :-\  Oh, my goodness!  Just as I was typing this, on Dr. Oz, they started a segment on women who use their fat to make money.  The one on the show weighs 542#!!!  She said "Who wouldn't want a wonderful job like this?  It's easy money, it's fast money, just sitting on my butt and eating!"  Dr. Oz and a psychologist are doing tests on her to see what the fat is doing to her health-wise, then she says if she won't die because of the surgery,
she may have the by-pass surgery.  And she has five kids!!!  Unbelievable!!  And shocking!  Men pay women like her to eat obscene amounts of food, "squash" them by sitting on them, and other such things.  Can you even imagine?  Maybe I will skip the ice cream tonight!  :P

I'm going to sign off and watch the rest of Dr. Oz.  See you later!

Janet:  After reading that - I am glad that I only had one taco for lunch and water.  Amazing news.

Jackie:  Atta Girl - (that is a big "Hooray") for you in taking on another reading.  Can you possibly have someone help with the deep cleaning?  Just a few times per year would be good so you don't hurt yourself.  I know it is expensive - but you deserve a treat.

Pat:  Thanks for sending on Scotty's devotions.  You are in prayers!

Tonight, I go to the twice monthly quilt meeting and Don will be playing cribbage.  The "boys" play the same night we have our meetings.  Today, we stopped at Hobby Lobby for me to buy some supplies - then, two grocery stores.  One is mainly vegetables.  Tuesday is $1 taco day and I only cost $1 because I drank water.  Don's meal was $3 in total with a mini  chocolate shake.  Supper is going to be a bit of meat loaf and fresh corn - two Colorado peaches for dessert.  You will notice, I am not going to comment on our treats at quilting - it is always great desserts.

We are still dog-sitting Loki and that ends on Friday.  I feel that he is so smart - he is really "herding" us.  We are spoiling him a bit because of his illness and age - so, he was given bacon treats on top of his regular dish three nights ago just to entice him to eat.  The next night, he made sure we saw him staring at the jar of bacon treats he wanted added to his food.  Such pushovers we are....  Don was out on a long walk with him and the rain came so hard that they were both soaked - thankful for the invention of a clothes dryer.

...I always consider myself a hard worker, not afraid of hard work, like my late father and his " rough and ready " family were....In the past I have held many office -school- private house cleaning jobs...one time I would clean offices in the early morning, some small, some large, then again in the evenings, hoovering, polishing, filling and disposing of large black plastic bags of their rubbish but...now with my Illness just the simplest of things mess my body up...life for me just gets so so frustrating...when the mind and brain says do it but the body tells you different, and if you go ahead, you suffer afterwards...
Its not just the physical jobs but even hand washing a few cashmere jumpers, then putting them into the spin dyer before hanging them on coat hangers can mess up my body, I think its the bending forwards and my shoulders moving back and forwards...guess its my brain, and central nervous system ( optic nerves ) playing up...MS is one of those silent illnesses-diseases, we look normal on the outside but what is going on inside tells another story that only we experience...

Ha ha, yes the next reading is a tad more straightforwards than my last session was...

Hi everyone. I woke up to rain and we expect it on and off for the next two weeks, according to the weather forecasts.  We had a lot of rain yesterday and it, like this morning, was a nice continual and gentle type rain rather than those downpours we sometimes get.  This is to be another day, like yesterday, when we didn't get much above 80 degrees.  While I was thinking about it I went out to the garage and turned off the sprinkler system so it won't water early tomorrow morning.

If it is not raining too hard this morning I plan on a quick trip to Costco to get Pat more frozen strawberries plus a couple of other items and to get the car gas tank filled up again.  This afternoon I plan on making a lettuce salad to go with the mac/cheese and ham crockpot dinner Pat is making for our dinner with Scott and Jennifer this evening.  We did go to Pizza Hut for our evening meal yesterday and got to spend just a few minutes with our son.

Jackie, sorry to read that you overdid in trying to do that cleaning job.  It sounds like it might be time for you to consider finding someone to come and help with some cleaning.  We have used a cleaning lady or ladies for probably around 15 years and it is worth every penny we pay to get it done. It is not a matter of not being a hard worker but that physically we can no longer handle it well. It sounds like you were a very hard worker as you were able. Do you have one of those grabber tools where you can pick up things without having to bend over?  We have these throughout our home and they really work. I hope today finds you feeling much better. I think your explanations of MS as it progresses is giving us all a better understanding of this dreadful disease.

Marilyn, hopefully Keith's progression of his illness will be a slow one and he can have many more years of enjoying his retired life.  I don't envy you having to be out on the highway in the midst of the eclipse traffic.  South Carolina is also in the direct path of the eclipse and the State is expecting at least one million visitors.  Our county is just on the edge of the path but about 70 miles from us will be right in the middle of the path.  There are all kinds of events, parties and other activities being planned around it.  I read that all 11,000 motel rooms in Columbia, South Carolina, are booked and I expect the Augusta, GA area will experience the same thing and it is an easy drive on I-20 to get from this area to Columbia.  We will be staying home and off the highway on that date.  I sure hope it doesn't take you all day on the road to get to the wedding site.

Janet, it sounds like you didn't have much cooking to do on Tuesday.  It sounds like you worked off the noon meal with all of that garden work.  Nice of Beth's friend Mindy to come and see her again.  She is obviously a true friend. Your Dr. Oz story is really quite disgusting as to why anyone would encourage someone else to keep gaining unneeded pounds.  I am convinced that the gastric bypass surgery my DIL had lead to her death after she had to have it done again due to complications.

Carol, fortunately most of us have some common sense about eating and when enough is enough.  I find one of the things that has happened to be as I have aged is the reduction in my appetite (not that I don't eat enough) but just not as much.  Hope you enjoyed your quilting evening and that Don won the cribbage games or at least some of them.  It sounds like you will miss attending to Loki when Friday arrives.

Hi, friends,

I'm checking in tonight, as the eye dilation medicine is beginning to fade away. The eye appointment and tests show that my dry macular degeneration is a bit worse, but the deterioration is not going very fast, thank You, God. And although I have a readout that suggests I may develop glaucoma, it hasn't yet shown up.

So, I praise the Lord - I've been diabetic since  early 1973, and still have my vision. Isn't God good!

Thank you for your good comments.

May God bless each one who comes here to participate either by reading, posting, praying, meditating, presenting really interesting photos.

Love to all,

Ruth Ann

Hi everyone. Another cloudy morning and headed up to 85 or a little higher this afternoon.  We did have more good rain yesterday morning.  There is a low percentage chance of more rain today.  I will go to coffee this morning and then, if not to tired, will go back downtown after getting my friend home and attend the Wisdom Group.  Nothing else on the schedule for today.

Ruth Ann, it sounds like you have done a great job of dealing with your diabetes.

Carol

Just stopping by this morning and reading the latest notes.

Ruth Ann:  You always stay positive and faithful.

Don wanted to watch the Dunkirk movie yesterday.  It was painful to watch.

Janet

Good morning!

It is overcast here and more rain is predicted, so Darrel is out on the mower, trying to finish up before the rain comes.  I have some errands to run, so as soon as I finish this, I'm going to town.

Ruth Ann, I also have Macular Degeneration.  My mom was nearly blind from it and glaucoma, when she moved to heaven at almost 95 years of age.  I pray daily that the Lord will allow me to continue to read until He calls me home!  I just cannot imagine my life without reading! The lady from the Low Vision group is coming to see me again today at 3:00.  I am needing a stronger magnifying glass!  Ruth Ann, I admire you for always looking for the good and maintaining a positive attitude.

Carol, Darrel likes war movies, too, and I find them painful and upsetting to watch.  I know they reflect reality, but reality is brutal sometimes.  Much prayer is needed for our sin-sick and broken world.
But there is much good to be seen still, when we are looking for it!

I enjoyed a nice visit with Beth's friend Mindi yesterday.  She's such a faithful and loyal friend to Beth,
I thank God for Mindi!

I'd better hurry, I hear thunder starting now!

Ruthann and Janet I too have Macular Degeneration, the dry kind I will see my Ophthalmologist again in December for another exam and scan. The last scan showed that the gel like substance that is behind the retina has only detached part way. I will also be seeing a retina specialist. I hope I don't have to go to Portland the eye institute like Keith does because that is a very long trip and I am tired of driving to Portland anyway. I will continue to take Keith since the only airline that was doing the northwest has now stopped that service here. We were going to fly to Portland for his next appointment.

Hi everyone. We will be back into the 90's today with a low chance of an isolated thunderstorm.  The housekeeper will be here a little later today.  I had planned on getting a haircut but just not feeling peppy enough to do it, at least this morning.  We do plan on eating our main meal out today.

Carol, was Don glad he has now seen the Dunkirk movie?

Janet, hope Darrel was able to get the yard finished before the rain and that your trip to town accomplished what you wanted.

Marilyn, is Macular Degeneration catching as Ruth Ann, Janet and you all have it.  (Of course I know it isn't catching.) Fortunately my worst eye problem is cataracts that seem to be progressing quite a bit this year.  I found a extension for the Google Crone browser called High Contrast that helps make the print darker.  You can easily toggle it on and off and it needs to be off to view pictures but sure helps read.

Jackie, beautiful graphic with a very good message.

Ruth Ann Bice

Hi, friends,

Thank you so much for your kind messages. May each of you be blessed.

Larry, I was taught that in the workplace, it's easier to set up the monitor for black background and white text, which I thought strange at the time. Now, I truly understand. I have all my Bible apps on the phone set with the reading screens with white text and black screens.

My sister in law is back in the hospital, so, I must go to her apartment to feed her cat.  Therefore I must go for today.

Cloudy and dark with pretty high humidity.  So even though the temperature is low I still need to run the air conditioner in order to breathe.  Thank the Lord for the a/c even though I've always hated it.  What would I have done 100 years ago?

I've spent the last couple of hours putting together my food order.  Another love/hate situation.  I hate online shopping, but if Walmart hadn't instituted the new grocery pickup program, and if I didn't have such wonderful neighbors willing to do the pickup, I'd really have problems.  So again thanking God for what He provides - even if I don't like it!   ;D

We only have one more trip to son's home to feed the dog his supper.  This entire week, we have been concerned that Loki would not feel well or worse - but thankfully, he is doing great.  Don needed some sugar in his system so we drove to the nearest Kneader's.  They have a wonderful bakery and we like going there because they actually are closed on Sunday.  There is a Kneaders in Tucson too.  Yum

Larry:  We could have had a bit more history on the situation at Dunkirk.  I am searching for some of that history.  It should not have happened but perhaps the intelligence on the size of the German army wasn't spot on.

Ruth Ann:  You are cat feeding and we are dog feeding.  Cats are easier to care for - but we are called upon to stay at our children's homes and dog-sit - -- we like being asked.

Jeanne Lee:  It is different to shop online.  I usually set it up a few days ahead of time and go in and add to the list.  But--- there is always something I forget if I am not actually in the store.  Well, to tell the truth, we stop by the stores too much because something is always forgotten or never crossed my mind until cooking time.  The funny thing is we lived in the tiny town - really 7 miles from a grocery store, and church.  All those years, I only borrowed one thing from a neighbor and she only came over once as well.  Yuck on high humidity!

I made a pasta casserole and baked brownies for Philip's homecoming tonight.  He said the weather was nice all week (unlike our tremendous downpours) and he hiked a mountain as well as a lot of trails.  Glad they could get outdoors this week.  For fun (not fun) I have had to change a quilt pattern because the last part of the pattern is missing.   Really disappointing.

Our area has had more rain than we can remember this time of year--ever!  It's wonderful, but Liberal had flooding last night, from five inches of rain in a short time.  We got another 3/4 inch, but all around us, people are reporting 2, 2 1/2 and 3 inches.  It's really staying nice and green this summer!

I want to attend a going away party for the PA I have gone to for the past several years.  It's supposed to be at the park by the gym, so will go see.  I'd like to at least say goodbye and tell her how much I have appreciated her.  They are moving to South Dakota.

Then tonight is also a meeting called Sisterhood Nights, and I want to attend that.  But will have to ask someone for a ride home, or else call Darrel to come get me.  Not being able to drive at night is unhandy.  The low vision lady didn't make it yesterday.  She was in town but ran out of time with her other clients, so she asked if next month will work for me, and that's fine.

Marilyn, sorry to read that you are also dealing with Macular Degeneration.  Many "older" folks have it. (There's that pesky "O" word again!  :-\)

Jackie, I loved that pretty graphic!

Time to get going!  See you tomorrow!

Hi everyone.  It looks like it will be another relatively mild day.  We did have a good rain again last night and there is a possibility of more today.  My only plans for today are to attend a meeting this morning and then will watch the 3rd round of the big golf tournament.   Last evening we did go to a new BBQ place for us and it was good.  It seemed like ti took forever to get there and a much shorter time to get back home.  I guess that is always the case when you are not sure where something is.  I did see it as we drove by but had to find a place to turn around and come back to it.  Unfortunately their A/C had gone out yesterday and it was quite warm in the restaurant although they had fans running.

We had a very unexpected event happen yesterday as a coffee friend and fellow Church member called me saying he was going to bring over his dehumidifier for us to try for a few days.  I had mentioned at coffee on Thursday the problem we were having with very high humidity in our house.  It wasn't long became he drove in and unloaded it and brought it into the house.  It is working like a charm. He will pick it up on Tuesday and in the meantime I will be ordering one for us to use permanently.  They now have them with pumps built in so you can drain the water into a sink through a small hose and not have to empty a tank.  It really brought the humidity down in the house but Pat turned it off when she came to bed so it let the humidity rise again during the night so have to basically start again.  This should solve our humidity problem.

Ruth Ann, the little extension I mentioned yesteday has a toggle to go to a black screen with white letters and I am using it as I type this morning.  You are correct in that it is easier to read.  Thanks for letting me know about this.  Sorry that your SIL is back in the hospital.  It sounds like she is reaching the point where she really shouldn't have a pet as taking care of it as you have had to do is really a burden.

Jeanne, I have often had the same thought in remembering how hot the summer were in Missouri without A/C as I was growing up.  There is no way I would want to go back to those days.  I am glad you can use the online ordering.  I use a very handy new Google program called Keep and for lists it is very handy (as well as for other things you want to quickly access).  You create the grocery list with each item having a little checkbox at the front of the line.  Then after you have ordered you can put in a checkmark and it moves the item to an inactive stage.  The next time you order just go down the list and remove the check mark from any items you want to put back on your current shopping list.  I find it helpful for my Costco and Aldi's lists as it appears on my phone, which I keep with me, and as I shop I can just click on the item and it is out of my current list.

Carol, I bet you will miss the daily contact with Loki but sure glad he remained healthy while you were in charge of his care.  As far as I know we don't really have a good bakery around here and it is probably just as well.  However, the Publix and Costco bakeries do have some pretty tasty items.  Glad your son enjoyed good weather for his hiking.

Janet, we also have had an unusual amount of rain and everything is still very green outside.  Our last rains have been the kind that really soak into the ground rather than being a downpour, although Pat told me the one we had last night came down hard.  I did hear it as was asleep.

Jackie, another very nice piece you posted yesterday.

Carol

Have a wonderful Saturday and Sunday.  May all your prayers come true.

Janet

Jackie, that graphic is so pretty, and meaningful, too.  Thanks!

Larry, Can you explain to a total non-techie how to access the place to change to black background with white print?  That listing app (?) sounds so handy, whether shopping online or in person.  I need to learn this stuff; I am still toting paper lists and a pen.  :-\  So nice of your friend to lend you his dehumidifier!  When you get yours, it should make life more pleasant for you and Pat.  Glad you won't be having to lift a tank full of water!

I did go to the going away party, for only a few minutes, but got to talk to Christine and tell her I appreciated her.  She invited us to come visit them in South Dakota.  Very nice, but I don't really expect that to happen.  Then I went to the other event but was a total disappointment.  The music was painfully loud, and they sang the songs over and over and over and....well, you know.  Then, when the speaker came up, she would say (more like scream) a few sentences in English, then switch to Spanish.  She spoke so fast I could barely understand her, and they had the sound system way too loud.  After only a few minutes, I went outside and called Darrel to come get me!  At least ten other people left as I was waiting for him, and each of them commented on it being too loud.  You could actually still hear her outside the building!  Yikes.

I went out to the Farmers' Market this morning.  It's chilly today, so a sweater jacket felt really good.
That's a good place to go to see and visit with people.  I saw many whom I'd not seen for a long time!
I bought tomatoes and nothing else today.  It looks as if we may start getting some from our garden in another week or so, especially if they get some sunshine!  This weather is wonderful, but it makes me wonder what the Fall will be like!

I'm thinking I need to start cleaning out cabinets and pantry.  Not my favorite chore, but it's a good day to tackle it!

Hi, Carol!  Blessings on you, too!
