This is the size of plane John went on, Creebec was the airlines and the pilot was a 20 something very skilled pilot.  He had the same pilot coming home.

Each room is represented by an animal, this is bear in Cree.

Dining was expensive, $18 for fish and chips.All of John's food was paid for by voucher. The residents stock up on food during the last of the winter, when it can be brought to the island by truck.  While the ice is melting and until the boats and barges are running the supplies are taken in by helicopter, and with the cost of aviation fuel the prices rocket.

A step ladder needed to get into the plane?  I think I'll stay on the ground. 

Love those coverlets on the beds, but is that a tear in the lampshade?

$18?  Sounds like it would pay to carry your own meals.

Homes are far better than what we have been led to believe.

Tepee's are there ready for the tourist season, they are not used during the winter.

Iceroads are used by everyone to get to the mainland.  Many vehicles are the top of the line pickups and cars..you can see the vehicles in this one on the river, this is the view from John's hotel window.

They have malls like us, just not quite as fancy.

We complain about snow.  This is outside the education center.  John asked if the buses stopped in the winter. The response was revealing, "no why would we?"  John said the buses now stopped if the temperature reached -39.  His reply was "well maybe for a day if the temperature goes down below -50."

As you can see the ice is melting and they are readying the helicopter.

In the summer they use a barge to transport supplies to the island as well as to other native communities further up James Bay.

The people of the north are friendly outgoing and accommodating. The price John quoted was reasonable by our standards, and they didn't flinch at paying.  The "Boss" as the lady was referred to, dressed well, John figures she goes to Timmins for her clothing.

They don't flinch at paying over $800 for a flight, or paying over $100 to have their car loaded on the train to drive down to Brampton or other places. They don't have our concerns about the high cost of living there.

Moosonee has a large hospital which services the northern communities, much of the training of Doctors and nurses is done there as well.

These are just a few of the 65 photos John took. during his stay there!

On the way back from the island they drove through water on the ice road, and thought nothing of it. That is simply their way of life.

Jean that is just showing the size of the plane he was on, he did not travel on that one!

 A changed community from when I was last there perhaps 30 years ago.

Jeanne, I think that's a cutout of a bear on the lampshade, especially since Judy mentioned that John's room is the "bear room."

I'd love to see more of the photos, also, when you have time, Judy.

Ruth Ann, you're right.  Looking at that lamp again with "bear" in mind, I can see that is a bear.   

I have shown you the best, I just wish he could have been closer to the hospital and got a picture of that as well.  I will let him see what I have posted and he can choose the next lot!

Here is a link to Bannock.. It is indeed like tea biscuits, but made with bear fat on the reservations.

How interesting to read about Bannock! Thanks. Those recipes do seem they'd be easy to make over a campfire.

And, with that in mind, although I don't have bannock, I think I'll have some wieners for a meal tonight, along with some chili flavored pinto beans. Yum, yum.
