    Balanta tribe:
Pray for Aliou Diatta, a Balanta believer who is helping
missionaries Dave and Tippy McKee revise evangelistic Bible lessons. "He is growing in understanding more clearly God's great plan of salvation, and His grace for living each day," the McKees wrote. "He has a sincere heart to reach others with the message."

This coming week, NTM missionaries in Senegal will hold their annual conference. Pray that this will be a good time of fellowship, refreshment and encouragement.

  • PANAMA:
The end is in sight for NTM missionaries in Panama -- and that's a good thing. Churches have been established in four of the five tribes where NTM serves -- praise the Lord! For more information, read the news story:
    http://www.ntm.org/connect/headlines/panama.shtml

Or receive the story by e-mail autoresponder. Send a blank e-mail with the subject "Send Panama" to: getinfo@ntm.org

    Guaymí tribe:
Praise the Lord that missionary Don Barger and Guaymí
believer Julio are making exceptional progress on revising evangelistic Bible lessons in Guaymí. They are primarily aiming at cultural barriers -- making sure the lessons will be clearly understood.

  • PHILIPPINES:
    Dumagat tribe:

More and more people are asking to be taught God's Word, and there are not enough Dumagat Bible teachers to answer all the requests. "A nice problem, but still a problem!" wrote David and Adriana Petro. Pray that the current teachers will remain faithful; that God will raise up more Bible teachers; and that people who must wait to hear the teaching will continue to be interested.

    Isneg tribe:
Missionary Galen Martin has been diagnosed with lung cancer.  He and his wife, Vicki, will be seeking further medical treatment. Their co-workers, Jonathan and Heidi Bamford, are to begin a year of home assignment this month. Toni Niemann, a single missionary who serves alongside the Martins and Bamfords, is looking to the Lord for direction.
This is a difficult time not only for the Martins, but for each member of the team. Pray! Pray also for Gabino and Gekag, two Isneg believers who have recently begun teaching evangelistic Bible lessons in a neighboring village.

  • INDONESIA:
    Buru tribe:

Fifty-one people attended evangelistic Bible lessons this past week. That's the most people who have attended the teaching, Paul and Atin McDole wrote. "We are still on schedule for finishing the ... lessons by Easter," they wrote. Pray!

    Lauje tribe:
Bonard and May Whatley ask for prayer for Lauje men who are teaching God's Word in several villages. Asmun has been going to Dengko; Atrise and Gindihati are taking the long trip to Baina'ale; and Malucinta and Sediondong are starting to teach in Tengke Ulu.

  • MEXICO:
    Tarahumara tribe:

Pray for wisdom for missionary Tony Finch. He will be teaching the men from the Tarahumara church in Caborachi village on Saturday night. On Sunday afternoon he will share with the entire church.

  • BRAZIL:
Please pray for Marcio and Francineve Pimental and Eduardo and Marcia Conceicao. The Pimentals plan to minister among the Jaminawa-Arara people and Conceicaos expect to work among the Kuripako people. Both couples are currently waiting on the Lord for the finances needed to begin serving Him in these tribes. Pray!

  • BRAZIL:
    Marubo tribe:

Praise the Lord! Missionary Kristi Jansma has received a permanent Brazilian visa.

  • PAPUA NEW GUINEA:
Missionaries have recently made several survey trips in the Sepik River Region in northern Papua New Guinea. Studying the results, it's clear that at least 14 people groups in the region are in need of a clear presentation of the Gospel. "Please pray for the needed personal to reach those still in spiritual darkness," wrote missionaries Jim and Linda
    McIntyre.

"To You, O my Strength, I will sing praises; for God is my defense, my God of mercy."[/i] Psalm 59:17

    Praise Him heartily this weekend!

Marilyn, Jack had a little notebook that he kept beside his chair where he read his Bible each day.

In it he had lists.

List A was for the close family group and I'm looking at it now...  It started with my name and then the children's names and then the grandchildren.

Next he had List B.  List B was for the extended family--my brother and his family, my sister and her family and his sister and her children.

List C had close friend from the church, his buddies he worked with, etc.

List D was various Missionary Organizations (he has New Tribes Mission on this list) and other groups he was associated with.

When he prayed, he used these lists and now, it's so nice for me to be able to hold this little book and pray as he prayed.

Something like this might work for you as well.

  • Indonesia:
    Buru tribe:

Excitement is building among the Buru people as they realize the climax is drawing near. Evangelistic teaching has been ongoing for several months now and on Wednesday the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus will be presented.  Please pray for the 30 to 40 people that have been faithfully attending the teaching and for the many others who have attended sporadically. For more information, read the news story:
    http://www.ntm.org/connect/headlines/buru.shtml

Or receive the text of the story by e-mail autoresponder. Send a blank e-mail with the subject "Send Buru" to: getinfo@ntm.org

  • Venezuela:
    Pume tribe:

Guerrilla activity forced missionaries Merrill and Teresa Dyck to leave their home among the Pumes, but the work goes on through discipleship in safe locations. Praise the Lord for the work He is doing among the Pumes. For more information, read the news story, with photos:
    http://www.ntm.org/connect/headlines/pume.shtml

Or receive the text of the story by e-mail autoresponder. Send a blank e-mail with the subject "Send Pume" to: getinfo@ntm.org

  • Papua New Guinea:
    Elimbari tribe:

Elimbaris are teaching other Elimbaris to read their language. This is a key step in church planting, enabling people to read the Scriptures and lessons. Praise the Lord! For more information, read the news story, with photos:
    http://www.ntm.org/connect/headlines/elimbari.shtml

Or receive the text of the story by e-mail autoresponder. Send a blank e-mail with the subject "Send Elimbari" to: getinfo@ntm.org

    Aria tribe:
Believers in the village of Amsu-Ene desire to erect a church building but their unbelieving relatives are opposed. Pray for these believers to stand true amid the pressure, and for the unbelieving relatives to come to a knowledge of Christ.

    Mengen tribe:
Pray for missionaries Tim Erieau and Dave Wright as they prepare Bible lessons and translate Scripture portions for the Bible teaching that will begin soon. Lessons will be checked the last week of this month.

    Nimo tribe:
More than 70 percent of the New Testament has now been translated into the Nimo language, wrote Andrew and Ruth Murray, "but some of this still needs a lot of checking and adjusting with the Nimo language helpers." The Nimos and the Murrays are currently working on Revelation, 1 Timothy, Titus and some of Luke. Pray.

    Siawi tribe:
Linda Krieg, an NTM missionary to the Siawis, is also the mission's only translation consultant in Papua New Guinea for the next few months. "I'm not likely to get much, if any, time to dedicate to the Siawi translation," she wrote. "But in the Lord's timing, it will get done."
Pray for God's direction in the use of her time as she works in the next few weeks on Scripture translations for the Simbari, Nakui and Malaumanda people.

    Tigak tribe:
Ned Beall and three Tigak men are translating Genesis into the Tigak language, an important step toward beginning evangelistic Bible lessons in May. But they have encountered a problem that is keeping them from putting God's Word in a way that sounds natural to the Tigaks. Pray for patience and wisdom for Ned as he works through this.

  • Philippines:
NTM Aviation will soon be losing two pilots on the islands of Mindanao and Palawan. The flight program is essential to maintaining the ministries of tribal missionaries. Pray that God will send pilot-mechanics
    to join the team.

    Mandayan tribe:
Pilots have voiced concerns regarding the safety of the airstrip. There is a fairly steep bank on one side of the strip that needs to be flattened. So far the owner of the property is only interested in the easier part of the work (ploughing) but not the harder work of moving dirt. "Pray with us as we continue negotiations which may require the cooperation of several different people or groups of people to get the work completed," missionaries James and Kathleen DornJames and Kathleen wrote.

  • Panama:
    Embera tribe:

The chronological Bible lessons are being revised with a particular emphasis placed on the cultural barriers.  Satan is attempting to thwart the progress on the lessons. Two of the older believers, church leaders Cesar and Dionicio from the Vigia church, are in Piriati helping on the revision. Pray for wisdom for Jamie Enemark as he writes the lessons.

  • Kuna tribe:
A leadership seminar for 23 island churches along with the Morti and Pucuro churches has just ended. Another seminar will take place for the Kuna churches of the Panama City area from April 25-27. Pray that the churches will be strengthened as a result of these seminars.

  • Mexico:
    Tarahumara tribe:

The men from the church at Caborachi were encouraged by a visit from missionary Tony Finch last week. "They expressed their greetings to all of you who are praying for them and keep requesting your prayers for the problems that they continue to face ... from the unbelievers," Tony wrote.

  • Senegal:
    Budik tribe:

Pray for the Budik believers and NTM missionaries Ron and Debbie Abram. While the Abrams' co-workers, Ken and Kathy Satorius, are on home assignment, the Budik believers are doing most of the Bible teaching, while Ron and Debbie disciple leaders, teachers and others outside the regular meetings.

  • Brazil:
Praise the Lord for a work team that came from Cincinnati to the mission's school at Purequequara. Most of them went home last week after pouring concrete, scrubbing and painting.

  • Bolivia:
    Chimane tribe:

"Come and visit us and explain to us what we are hearing on the radio," the people say. The families involved in a radio ministry with the Chimanes have discussed ways to respond to this open door and have begun to put in motion a plan. Pray that God will direct so that more leaders and their families can be taught and trained for ministry in their communities.

  • Indonesia:
Jim Elliot and Ray Milton are planning to do a survey of the Indonesian province of Papua later this month in order to begin the process of choosing a location to work in. Pray for their preparations, the Lord's direction, and for a good welcome among the people.

  • Travel:
War-related issues and the spread of SARS have affected many travel plans for our missionaries. Pray for flexibility and for the ability to see God's will and purpose in each change of plans.

Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms.  James 5:13

Have a great time of praying and singing with your fellow Christians this weekend!

    * * *

Have you ever thought about how cool it would be to stand next to people from another culture and worship God with them?

Are you thrilled by the diversity of music that praises God?

Do you enjoy taking part in lifting up His Name in song?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, we have a real treat for you.

  • Our new Special Report:
Celebrate! gives you the opportunity to listen to 15 worship songs sung by tribal people from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Some are in the tribe's unique musical tradition; some are adapted from Western songs; and many are a mix of the two.

  • Indonesia:
    Buru tribe:

  • Indonesia:
"The doors for ministry here have never been more open," wrote Paul and Bella Gervasi. "We are seeing God's hand as numerous groups of people in several areas of Indonesia are asking for missionaries to come and teach them." The Gervasis say that visas are becoming easier to get and they would love to see others join the work. Pray for laborers.

    Punan tribe:
The Punan church on West Kalimantan island is a growing church and is planning evangelistic outreach in their own language group and in related dialects. They have one serious lack though. They lack a New Testament translation. Gifted translators are needed. Pray that this need will soon be met.

  • Venezuela:
    Maco tribe:

The two oldest men in the village of Marueta are hearing the Word of God. Felipe and Ka'balu attend morning teaching sessions and afternoon review lessons. They listen, answer questions, mumble to each other, and every now and then exclaim, "Would you listen to that!" Pray that what Felipe and Ka'balu are hearing will enter their hearts and not just their ears. Pray for their salvation.

    Panama Buglere tribe:
Ceferino, a believer in Soledad, has been a diligent student of God's Word over the years and has a desire to teach, but his shyness is holding him back. Pray that God will grant him boldness.

    Guaymi tribe:
The believers will be remembering the death, burial and resurrection of Christ during an Easter week conference.  Pray for safety for those traveling to the conference and that the meetings will bring encouragement to the believers and salvation to unbelievers.

  • Thailand:
    Prai tribe:

"The believers at Knife Creek continue to bring us much joy. They are faithful in studying the Word, and in sharing with those around them," David and Fran Jordan wrote. The Jordans ask that you pray for the Lord to open an outreach opportunity for the Knife Creek
Christians that would allow them to consistently teach the Word.

  • Brazil:
    Yanomami tribe:

Brais, a Yanomami believer, continues to stand firm in the Lord, teaching in the church despite suffering criticism by other believers who aren't walking with the Lord. Pray that Brais will not become discouraged and that those criticizing him will repent.

  • Papua New Guinea:
    Simbari Tribe:

David and Shari Ogg along with partner Lori Morley are working diligently to finish translation and literacy projects before leaving on home assignment. The final check on the book of Mark is scheduled for May 14. Pray that the check will go well, with minimal corrections to make, and that the printing may be done before the
    missionaries' departure date.

  • Mexico:
    Tepehuan tribe:

The Baborigame team has started to do part of the church services in the Tepehuan language in addition to Spanish. Pray for good interest among the people and for God's Word to be cleary understood.

  • USA:
Several conferences and workshops will be taking place at the USA Home Office in Sanford, Florida, in the next few weeks. Pray for safety as our missionaries travel from the fields to attend, and that the conferences will benefit the attendees in their respective lives and ministries.

  • Panama:
    Guaymi tribe:

The believers will be remembering the death, burial and resurrection of Christ during an Easter week conference.  Pray for safety for those traveling to the conference and that the meetings will bring encouragement to the believers and salvation to unbelievers.

  • Philippines:
Many missionaries are facing difficult situations as they
plant churches. Pray for safety as they venture into the enemy's territory to proclaim freedom to those in bondage.

Missionaries will soon be presenting the Gospel message in a tribal village in the Philippines. Pray for those who hear, that they will be open to the work of the Holy Spirit in bringing them to a saving knowledge
    of Christ.*

"... Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:1,2

May the Lord be magnified in your celebration of Him this weekend. He is risen!

Anthony

Thank you Pat for keeping us informed with NTM and thank you also for telling us about Jack's prayer list.  I have never used a prayer list, but I think I might need to start as there are so many in need in these day.

Thanks for your help in this area of the forum Pat.

Anthony.

Judy McKenna

Pat - I found it interesting to read about Jack's prayer lists, and how he remembered to pray for each.

I do it this way.  Having 5 grandchildren, each child takes up one day a week for their special prayer.  Then on the weekend, Saturday is the day I pray for David and Beth, Sunday is the day for Karen and Greg.

With our blessing that we say before meals, we always mention the kids as well.

Lately I have asked them is they have anything they would like me to pray about.  At first it was rather awkward....they couldn't think of a thing.  Now they go ahead and mention various things to me.

Its opened up a new way of communication.

Seems to be working.....Thank you Lord!!
"I am too blessed to be stressed".

  • PHILIPPINES:
    Banwaon tribe:

Many people placed their faith in Christ after two Banwaon missionaries completed evangelistic Bible lessons last week.  Until recently, the door had been closed to ministry in the area where they were teaching. When the door opened, Banwaons stepped forward, believing God was leading them, and the Banwaon church responded by sending them. Praise the Lord! For more information, read the news story:

Samon, a Cambodian pastor, is preparing to move into a Poa village to minister among the people. God has opened the doors to this ministry in ways only He can. Praise the Lord! For more information, read the news story:

  • INDONESIA:
    Buru tribe:

Many people who had not attended all the evangelical Bible lessons showed up for the final lesson Sunday. So missionaries are doing more teaching, and following up one-on-one, to be sure the Gospel is clear. Pray! For more information, read the news story, with a photo:

    Da'an tribe:
David Searcy and three Punan men visited a group in this tribe two weeks ago, encouraging them to become more involved with the other churches in the area. Last week several of the men from this village attended a Bible study that David is teaching. One of the men,  Juman, and his wife, Bongkat, said they really want to serve the Lord. They have been in and out of discipleship for a number of years. Pray that they will
    truly become committed.

  • MEXICO:
The government is working on a road which will make reaching two areas with the Gospel much more "do-able." Pray that nothing will hinder this project and that the road will be extended.

There are some 33,000 evangelical churches in Mexico, and several are expressing a desire to prepare and send out cross cultural missionaries.  NTM would like to develop a program that would involve the Mexican church.  Pray that a team of representatives would be raised to begin challenging Mexican churches to send her laborers.

    Tarahumara tribe:
More than 100 believers from many villages gathered for a four-day Easter celebration. Missionaries were thrilled to see the Tarahumaras take responsibility for conducting three meetings a day, as well as coordinating meals. Pray that the celebration will continue in the hearts of the believers as they return to their villages and that their testimony will affect others.

  • COLOMBIA:
Despite ongoing obstacles and dangers, the Church moves forward.  Translations are being written, Bible lessons are being prepared, and culture files are being updated. Tribal people carry on the work of proclaiming the Gospel and discipling believers. Pray that God will
continue to strengthen and protect those who are risking their lives in obedience to Him.

  • PAPUA NEW GUINEA:
Praise the Lord that the needs of missionaries in PNG will soon be met to a greater extent since God has provided two King Air twin-engine aircraft. One of these airplanes is just about upgraded to field specifications. The other plane will be brought up to the same standard when funds are available. Pray for the Lord's provision and that both planes will soon be serving our missionaries.

    Dinangat tribe:
The Schlegel and Markley families flew into the tribe today to begin a two-week building project. They will be building the Schlegel's house and will continue building the relationships with the people. The missionaries would like to have three houses built and be ready to move into the tribe in July or August. Pray for safety while working, for team unity, and for a continuing good reception by the tribal people.

    Wuzarambya tribe:
Willis, a teacher in the Wuzarambya church, is always
well-prepared each Sunday. Pray for his continued faithfulness and that his zeal would become contagious and spread to the rest of the church.  Andrew and Cathy Goud wrote, "We're praying that as God works in the hearts of believers here in Wuzarambya, that they would overcome their fears and be unable to contain their excitement about His Word."

  • PARAGUAY:
    Pai Tavy Tera tribe:
Antonio and his wife, Empolita, professed Christ as their Savior and were baptized Sunday along with five others.  Pray for these new believers as they return to their home in Pikykua, that they will become established in their walk with the Lord. "Pray with us," wrote Don and Julie Flower, "as we figure out how to continue teaching them."

  • PANAMA:
    Kuna tribe:

The churches of the Panama City area are meeting this weekend for a leadership seminar. The Kuna church is a point where they can continue without a missionary presence. One Kuna has told Jerry and Joyce McDaniels, "We have no excuse not to keep growing.  You have made all of these Bible lessons, materials, taught us how to read, and how to teach others." Pray that the seminar will benefit all who attend and that  Jerry and Joyce will have wisdom in their participation.

    Buglere tribe:
"It was the best Easter Conference ever." Missionaries
reported the Buglere church leaders are taking more and more responsibility for the arrangements, the teaching, and the hosting of the visitors. Thanks for praying and continue to pray for the different church
leaders to remain strong and to continue to grow in their relationship with the Lord.

  • VENEZUELA:
    Pume tribe:

After working with two couples for three weeks, five more leaders joined Merrill and Teresa Dyck for daily discipleship.  Teaching sessions took place in the mornings while evening meetings were more informal. The afternoons were spent on translation and Bible
curriculum checking. It was a very productive time.  Merrill wrote, "God did many great things." Pray for the leaders as they return to the tribe.

I'm glad you're enjoying them, Marilyn!  My youngest son was with New Tribes when he was a teenager helping them build a school and we have had friends associated with this mission for years and years.

They are really good.

I was interested particularly in the piece about Cambodia.  I recently watched a film about the Cambodian people.  I never heard such misery as they experienced during the years of that dictator (don't know how to spell his name).  It is wonderful that the church of God still grew during that evil reign. It minds me of the verse of scripture that speaks about God building his church and the gates of hell not being able to prevail against it.

Thank you for posting the newsletter up Pat.

    • PAPUA NEW GUINEA:
      Mengen tribe: [/b]
The first Mengen literacy class has graduated. Praise the Lord! Now that some of the people can read and write their own language -- a key step toward planting a church -- missionaries are almost ready to start teaching Bible lessons. For more information, read the news story: http://www.ntm.org/connect/headlines/mengen.shtml

Or receive the story by e-mail autoresponder. Send a blank e-mail with the subject "Send Mengen" to: getinfo@ntm.org

      Nakui tribe:
Portions of the book of Acts were checked last week by the language consultant. Missionary Tim Askew is now making corrections and Acts will then be printed for distribution to the believers. Pray that this will encourage the Nakuis.

Bible translation consultant Linda Kreig will be doing two translation checks in the Highlands region and then travel to the Sepik region for three more checks. Pray that any necessary corrections might be done quickly and accurately.

      Madak tribe:
A dispute over the land that the missionaries' houses are built on has resurfaced. Two clans claim ownership of the property. Pray for a resolution to this problem so that Larry and Caroline Folkers, Karl and Maribeth Greeb, and Chris and Peggy Bittner can focus on planting a church among the Madaks.

      Mengen tribe:
What a blessing an airstrip would be to missionaries Tim and Darlene Erieau and Dave and Judy Wright. They would like to have a grand opening celebration in July upon completion of the airstrip. The work is in its final stages but is being delayed by rain. Pray for the soon
      completion of this airstrip.

      Aria tribe:
The Aria churches need more leadership. The work of overseeing five churches is being carried on by three elders. Aminas, the only elder downriver, is especially being stretched. There are two possible candidates. Pray for discernment in seeing more elders ordained.

      • INDONESIA:
        Buru tribe:[/b]
Continue to pray for those who have just heard the
Gospel for the first time, that their hearts will open to receive God's truth.

        Sekadau tribe:
Missionaries Helmut and Angelika Mehringer were excited to find believers in the village of Parobut, who heard the Gospel from people of the neighboring tribe. They have lacked in further teaching but are eager to be discipled. Pray as Helmut and Angelika learn the language so they can continue what has begun.

        • THAILAND:
          Prai tribe: [/b]
Teaching on the book of Acts has just finished at Knife Creek. The believers are now doing a review of Acts by watching a series of videos. Missionaries Dave and Fran Jordan are preparing lessons for the book of Romans to continue the teaching. Pray for the Jordans, being prepared and for the Knife Creek believers to grow in their walks with the Lord.

          • PARAGUAY:
            Manjui tribe: [/b]
In April, missionary Gordan Hunt, his son Jeff (a co-worker), and two Manjui Bible teachers (Isnei and Sesa) visited six communities to determine their spiritual state. Isnei and Sesa saw the needs beyond their own community. Pray for them as they share their vision with other Manjuis and enlarge their ministries.

            • IVORY COAST: [/b]
A ceasefire agreement and the end of the war was declared last Saturday. "There may still be some uncontrolled elements on the ground," the rebel commander said, "but this is the end of the war." Three New Tribes missionaries will be making a trip soon to assess the condition of mission property. Pray that life in Ivory Coast will be restored to order and that missionaries may soon be able to return to their ministries.

              • BRAZIL: [/b]
"We are thrilled with the involvement we see the Brazilian church taking in reaching the isolated groups here," wrote missionaries Brian and Sherri Wardlaw. Since June 2001, 66 new missionaries have finished the
training course at Shekinah and become involved in ministries to unevangelized people groups. Pray for the students now in training as they continue their progress toward the tribes.

                • PHILIPPINES: [/b]
Surveys have been done to check out various areas for
ministry on Northern Luzon, and several families are preparing to move into tribal locations. Pray for God's wisdom, direction, protection and provision for these families.*

                  • SENEGAL:
                    Budik tribe: [/b]
The translation of the books of Hebrews and Philippians in Budik were checked and approved. They are now being printed. Only the books of 1 and 2 Peter and 2 Corinthians remain to be translated to complete the New Testament. Pray for the spiritual growth of the Budik church as they receive more of God's Word, and pray that they will soon have a complete New Testament in their language.

                    • GREENLAND: [/b]
Missionaries Neil and Tone Hess have attended several funerals lately. It saddens them to see the rituals the people go through for the dead. The Hesses are studying language and culture and look forward to the
day when they can share the Word of life with the people of Greenland.

                      • VENEZUELA:
                        Yuana tribe: [/b]
Finding the right words to translate many Biblical concepts into another language is often difficult. Missionary Steve Bove is experiencing that as he translates and teaches the Yuanas. Pray that Steve will find the right words and be able to convey the concepts in his teaching. Steve's co-workers Dave and Sue Rodman wrote, "Many of the Yauanas are understanding the truths being taught from Romans.  This is exciting!"
"And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God." 1 John 4:14,15

May this weekend find you abiding in Christ.

Pat; What Iparticularly like about all these reports is that each tribe is learning to read and speak their own language. That is so important sothey can read the Scriputres and teach others like the one tribe hearing about the gospel from a neighboring tribe. I think this is a terrific outreach and missionary program. Has It been around for a long time.?

    Hi Marilyn...

Yes, for the most part, New Tribes Mission is a really good one.  I have many friends who are with them.

As a matter of fact, I was interested to see Brian Wardlaw's name under Brazil this time.  He's the son of Keith and Myrtle Wardlaw who were instrumental in opening up that part of Brazil near Boa Vista miles from Manaus in the late 1950's and early 1960's and retired now.  It's nice to see the children carrying on the work that the parents started.

I do believe that NTM started in about 1941 or 1942.

Pat: I saw Gracia Burnham this morning on the John Walsh show via satellite talking about the day they were captured and what it was like for her while in captivity and their rescue. It was very interesting. She looks like she is doing well.I had also seen another time where there was new house built for her and the children.,

    • BRAZIL:
      Guanano tribe:

Pray that we may have great wisdom as we help protect these young believers from their spiritual enemies, and guide them in their first steps of new life."

    • GUINEA:

To supplement and reinforce the evangelistic Bible teaching, the people have been watching videos based on the books of Genesis and Luke. Missionaries Kirk and Yolanda Rogers report that one Landuma man, Masalu, said that the videos are "helping them to believe that what we are teaching really is the truth,". Pray that the Landuma people "will abandon their false notions about Christ and believe the truth that he is indeed God the Son," Kirk wrote.

Thanks very much, Pat, for all that NTM info.   We were at one time (1957 or so!) very, very close to one couple who were in training with NTM near Modesto, CA.  We actually went over, stayed many nights, went through the classes, etc.  They do indeed have a very important mission to fulfill.

    Pat

Thanks Al!  Janet has been telling me all about Gracia Burnham's book that she just couldn't lay down after starting it so I must get that book.

    Are you near Modesto?

Not any more.  Many years ago we lived in the San Jose area, and that was never terribly far from Modesto.  Now, though, we live near Eureka, which is near the very northwest corner of California, so it's quite a long way to Modesto now.
Modesto is south of Sacramento.  We are north and west of Sacramento by approximately 300 miles.

    New Tribes Mission~Burnham Update

    MAGAZINE ARTICLE MISREPRESENTS GRACIA
    [/color]

SANFORD, Florida (June 13, 2003): Since the publication of her book, In the Presence of My Enemies, Gracia Burnham has given many interviews, both secular and Christian. Her desire is that God be glorified through all of these. However, an article in June's Christianity Today -- "Did Martin Die Needlessly" -- has caused her grief. Gracia wants everyone to know that she is not an angry person, as the article portrays her to be, nor does she have issues with NTM regarding the mission's no-ransom policy.

Gracia is experiencing God's peace. During the interview with the journalist she spoke "about God's goodness in the whole situation, and how well we are doing now as a family." However the article did not reflect this but instead chose a tone that is "angry and accusatory."

In her rebuttal letter to Christianity Today, Gracia comments, "The truth is, people have wanted me to be angry but I am not, and have never said that I am. I do place the blame for Martin's death on the rebels, but that is not the same thing as being angry. I have some questions, and certainly I miss Martin, but I don't feel anger at this point."

With regard to the topic of ransom, Gracia affirms NTM's no-ransom policy.

During the interview she referred to New Testament passages (Matthew 20:28, Mark 10:45, I Timothy 2:6), which say that Jesus' purpose was "to give His life as a ransom for many." She also acknowledged that the application of this truth had limitations. However, the article made her appear as if she was "running away" with the application.

Gracia believes the journalist should have included more of her statements about ransom payment: "I would never advocate that a mission organization say they have a ransom pot to be there when they need it. And I think I would have been disappointed if New Tribes Mission had paid a ransom for us. It would have put missionaries in danger. But neither am I for a missions agency blocking a ransom."

Gracia's relationship with New Tribes Mission is strong. In fact she is an NTM representative. She and her children, along with Martin's parents and one of Martin's sisters and family, are currently taking part in an annual gathering of more than 400 NTM missionaries.

"I don't have any issues with New Tribes Mission," she states in her rebuttal letter. "I love them and appreciate them as never before. There were no easy answers in this hostage situation, and everyone did their best to get us out of the jungle. I fully trust God with the outcome."

This is the Gracia her NTM family knows.

Well, I think that this is terrible.  I haven't read her book yet but those who have read it sure have said just the opposite to what Christianity Today is saying.

Awful when someone is misquoted or a different slant is put on what is said in an interview.
