Title: from "The Task" Wm Cowper.
Post by: Jenny on September 03, 2003, 05:02:47 PM
Permission given by Cowper and Newton Museum.

In His Mental Illness William Cowper finds he is Not Alone.

I was a stricken deer, that left the herd
Long since: with many an arrow deep infixt
My panting side was charg'd, when I withdrew
To seek a tranquil death in distant shades.
There was I found by One who had Himself
Been hurt by th'archers.  In His side He bore,
And in His hands and feet,  the cruel scars.
With gentle force soliciting the darts,
He drew them forth, and heal'd and bade me live.
Since then, with few associates, in remote
And silent woods I wander, far from those
My former partners of the peopled scene;
With few associates, and not wishing more.

I remember reading some works by Cowper in college, I think, though I am not sure.  Is there a link to some of his other works?

Dear Karmat,
I am a lover of Cowper...life and works...

There is a great site for the Wm Cowper and John Newton Museum....After John's conversion (Amazing Grace). he did much to help others and he gave William a home and his keep.

One of his greatest works was "John Gilpin's Ride".......Everyone did this at school.

Amazon -on-line will have details of his works.

I sent an email to the Museum re permit to use on this site..
For any info......Joan McKillop. COWPER AND NEWTON MUSEUM....
