Can't say what I like about this one...but I do like it.  Well done!

It almost looks like an infrared picture. How did you get the exposure like that?

Orton effect.   Make two copies.   Top copy lighten up a lot, and blur it.   Slightly decrease the density of the second copy.   Merge them.  

Like most things, if you overdo it, it's ugly.   Keep a subtle touch.

This time, I did it quick and dirty; I'd normally be more careful to get it just right, but this is the process.

It is so interesting how you do this.  I enjoy the tutorial!

Wonderful picture.  He looks like an authentic character from the "old west".

Did you do that with Gimp?

Looks like some more triggernometry to me. There used to be a wild west video game called, Mad Dog Ma'Cree with a charachter in like this chap, you've managed to get some lovely velvety tones in the picture through your process.

Thank you, everyone.   I'm just experimenting around right now, but I like the soft results, with enough detail to see individual hairs.   It has possibilities.

Right.   Works fine in GIMP.  I hear it works for that other photo software, too.

Thanks for the tute. I must give that a go. I tried it once but it was more steps than I cared to do with post processing and yours is simply easy to follow. Like your results here! 

If you use GIMP, when you merge, set the type from "normal" to "multiply", and then go to the bottom (original) layer, and set the density to about 87.   That seems to work best for me.

I have no idea how to do that in PS.
