    Looks rather painful, but it isnt. What this guy is doing is what we call "getting set." His set position is good and he hasn't started the lift. What he is doing is taking a deep breath and filling his stomach with air. Its a lot like when an opera singer or a trumpeter takes a breath for a big powerful note. Then what lifters do is that after they are filled with air, they tighten their stomach muscles as har as they can. What this does is stablize your back and stomach so that you wont hurt you back or be the proud owne of a hernia.
