Morning Devotional...

Portals of Prayer

Genesis 3:1-7

Psalm 139:1-10

Did God Really Say . . .?

You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die. Genesis 3:3

As a serpent the devil slithered up to Eve and asked, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’ ” (verse 1). Eve answered that God had said they could eat of any tree in the garden but if they would even touch the tree in the middle of the garden, they would die. “You will not surely die,” the serpent declared. “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” (verses 4-5).

Doubt was planted in Eve’s mind. The forbidden fruit looked delicious and was desirable for gaining knowledge. Could they become like God by eating this fruit? Eve took the fruit, ate it, and gave some to Adam, who also ate it. The result was disaster.

The devil, likewise, tempts us to sin by casting doubt on God’s Word. The devil wants us to doubt that forgiveness of sins and salvation belong to us because of Jesus’ death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead. God’s Word tells us that all who believe in Him shall not perish but have eternal life
(John 3:16). We are forgiven. Eternal life is ours. God really said it!

Dear God, strengthen me by Your Word and Sacraments, and protect me from the devil’s temptations; through Jesus Christ, my Savior. Amen.

Jenny

Soni. Thank-you treasure.  :-*

I hope all you fellow flu sufferers are on the mend now.

I went to the Mercy Seat (thanks for the hymn yesterday Pat) and called loudly on our Heavenly Father yesterday afternoon.  I came downstairs to find visitors at my door.  The vicar, Justus and Graham his curate and John an elder...How's that for answered prayer.

"Lord it is wings I need for my weariness - love's wings.  That which tires my heart is not it's toil, but it's inaction it's aimlessness:  It will never cease to be tired until it can soar soar to Thee.  The burden and heat of my spriritual day is not its work but it's aimlessness; give me an aim O Lord.

Sometimes even the entrance of an earthly friend transforms my soul from languor into light ; Much more shalt Thou be if Thu wilt enter in....
Create a new heart within me - an eager bounding heart , a heart vibrating in response to Thy love.! Let me feel the passion and the pathos of life, of Thy life.  Let me be taken captive by Thy bounty! Let me catch the spell of Thy lovliness.  Let me be thrilled at the sound of Thy footsteps! Let me learn the rapture of hearing Thy Name! Let me experience the glow of excitement when the murmur runs round "Jesus of Nazareth passeth by."

Then shall the weariness of the heart vanish, then shall the languor of the spirit cease; for the liberty of flight is the Sabbath of the soul.  Then  as eagles , we shall not faint or be weary."

                      Papa John

I love you. You are a blessing.

Carol

I cannot stop thinking of the children and family members so devastated in Russia.  This is the saddest news ever.

We are carefully packing today and get on the airplane around noon tomorrow but of course leave the apartment early to travel to the airport.

Pat Scott:  You had the flu?  It sounds llike the wrong time of the year for flu.  Glad that it is over for you.

Larry:  We are getting anxious to go home but will really miss the wonderful breads they have and so many little things but there is really no place like home.  Missing the children so much and especially the grandchildren.  Take care.

I do have a bit of a problem with swelling in my legs so I am praying that there will be no problem on the airplane - am wearing special stockings to keep the swelling down.  Must get to my doctor.  This has plagued me for six weeks off and on.  Carol

Kathy

What a wonderful devotion and the Bible reading! I do love the Psalms and tyr to read one every day along with a portion of Psalm 119.  Thanks Sonja

Hello Everyone!

My friend up the road took Geordie and I for a hike this morning.  It was a lovely two and a half mile circular hike and the dogs just loved it.

My heart goes out the families who have gone through this traumatic time in Russia.  We can't even imagine it.  It's just terrible.

And now, I'm concerned for TurboTech and his wife down there on the east coast of Florida.  Let's continue to pray for the folks there.

Papa John

Good morning.  Thank you Jenny and Marilyn for your nice thoughts.  I'm sorry I didn't get in yesterday.  Cornelia and I are doing very well.  I'm still coping with my sore back.  I say, with a smile, "It only hurts when I move except for sometimes when I don't move."  But I am thankful each day just to be here.  We are looking forward to the last week in September when we will spend our week in Pigeon Forge.  Last year when we were scheduled to go there I found myself in the hospital.  I am hoping things will go better this time.

Pat and others who have had the flu, I hope you will be well soon.  It isn't fun to be sick.  And Marilyn I hope you are over the bruises from your fall.  Be careful and don't fall.  You are still young but the weakness of old age kind of slip up on you.

Carol, I hope you have a nice flight home.  I suggest that you try to get up and walk up and down the aisles some to keep up the circulation in your legs and keep down the chances of blood clots.  32 years ago, in 1972, we moved back to the States from Belgium where we spent five years in mission work.

Sonja, thank you for the devotional.  We need to be strong every day and realize that Satan is stil working in this world to deceive us.

Larry Hanna

Hi everyone.  This is the start of the Labor Day 3-day weekend here in the USA.  I forgot the banks are closed today and had to drive a few extra miles to the credit union to use their ATM so we would have some cash for the weekend.  I also stopped at the Dollar Store to restock our battery supply.  I don't expect any power outage from the storm but felt we needed to be prepared in case we lose power.

Sonja, a very fine devotional this morning.  The evidences of satan's tempting is viewable all around us and all around the world.  Certainly the terrible massacre in Russia the last few days is solid testimony to that fact.

Papa John, no repeats of last year now.  Know you enjoy your time in Pigeon Forge as it makes a nice getaway.  Several years ago Pat and I exchanged our timeshare for a week there and had a nice time.

Pat, glad you were up to the hike as know you enjoy doing that.  Also nice to go with a friend.

Ruth Ann, rest up today .  I am staying home today as well as the University of Georgia plays its first football game of the season at 3 pm this afternoon.  I plan to watch it.

Carol, it sounds like it will be important for you to get up and walk on the plane as Papa John has suggested.  Hope you have a smooth flight home.  Are you able to fly direct to Denver or do you have to go through customs at another airport and take another flight on home?

Jenny, glad your vicar was at the door.  I remember you indicating this has happened before.

Liz, sorry to hear you have been so ill.  I think our pets are very sensitive to how we are feeling and also very possessive.  Glad you are feeling better.  Regarding the SP2, I tried to load it on my desktop last night and the installation failed with the message that it detected some type of hardware failure and couldn't write the backup file.  I did install it on my new laptop this morning without any problems and will put it on my daughter's computer shortly.

Sonja, I looked at several of those bad inventions.  Pat, we also had one of those timers.

Janet and Marilyn, I feel for both of you having to lift those heavy wheelchairs in and out of the car.  I had to do that a few times with my mother and it is not something I would like to have to do very often.  Janet, that was a really tough day you had yesterday.  Glad you were able to get the commodities for Beth.  Hope you all have a great weekend at the K-State game and that your team wins (since they are not playing my team).  Tailgating parties seem to be very popular.  They are even doing that at the highschool Friday night games around here.

Hi Kathy, Ruth, Nards, Karma, Al and anyone I may have missed mentioned.

I want to do some work on my webpage for the church later today and a couple of other things.  Hope everyone has a nice day.

.

Good Morning!   :D   I just have to come out of my corner this morning long enough to say a huge THANK YOU to each of you for the devotionals!  I had already read my own devotions from F.B.Meyer for the day and it so closely ties into what I found here.

SONI~You started us off with a great devotional message. Then, along comes JENNY with another one.  <I also benefitted greatly from the scriptures you posted elsewhere today>.
PAPA JOHN you and Cornelia are always an inspiration for me ... and your "neighbor" RUTH ANN! (Take care, and just rest today.)
MARILYN, AOL usually has ongoing news reports.  You should be able to keep up on the hurricane news there.  Actually, Turbotech (John) has posted an update in the Prayer Room.

CAROL you are most likely on your way home by now ... I pray for a safe trip and happy arrival.

PAT~How neat that your neighbors and you had such a nice time this morning ... I know the dogs really enjoyed it too!

SONI!    :o   Snow???  Really??? WOW

Hi to Nards and Karma (and TAS and Boomer), and Kathy and Larry and all who will come here today.  Have a wonderful weekend!
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass .... it's about learning to dance in the rain!

Etta Sue

Busy morning.

My brother was backing his RV out and clipped the downspout on his garage.  They went to a football game near Cincinnati where a grandson is playing for Hanover College.  Seven people in the RV.

I called a DIL of a neighbor whose birthday is the same day as mine.  The DIL brought me pictures of the 8 grandchildren of Marge's.  I scanned them and put them through PSP8...cropping, enhancing, resizing, compressing...and then put them on a blank greeting card.  I added some flower graphics and then found a neat poem about Grandparents and Grandchildren on the web.  I love doing personal greeting cards and I am sure Marge will be pleasantly surprised.

I am praying that everyone gets over this flu bug.

Sonja ~ Funny site!!!

Nards ~ You are a dog!!!!  A cute dog!

Larry ~ I didn't know A/C would freeze up if set too low.  Surely it wasn't set for 32 degrees!!!  :o

Marilyn ~ Slow down.

Janet ~ Slow down.

Carol ~ Welcome home!!!

Kathy ~ Stay in during this hurricane.

Papa John ~ Wonderful words of wisdom.

Ruth Ann ~ Rest today...you deserve it!

Snow???  Snow???  I love snow.  It's still hot here, though cooling down.

I have decided that germs can be spread through cyber space.  Travis and I both have a cold.  I figure it is a flu germ that got weakened in the phone lines. :-P  I don't feel too badly, just a stuffy head.

Lots of people on the Interstate.  Labor day vacationers and we are getting a lot of the evacuees from FL, SC and even southern GA.  It is possible that we will get some rain, and even some heavy winds if it doesn't blow out coming up the coast, but I don't think it is supposed to be too bad here.

Last night, at my mom's, I watched a few minutes of coverage of the Russian situation.  <personal soapbox>I don't think I realized how desensitized I had been when I watched TV all the time.  We don't have one, and I was shocked at what was on there last night.  <off soapbox>  Anyway, in just a few minutes, I was teary eyed and Travis was asking what was going on.  I decided not to watch anymore of it.

Great dev. Soni!!

I hope everyone is feeling better today, travelling safely, and enjoying the weekend.

bernard is off all next week!!!  WoOHOOoo.  We had thought at one point about going to the beach. Glad we decided not to!!

Jenny

Hello Everyone.

I just posted a good post and AOL cut me off again...yes Marilyn, again!!! I almost decided to give up and shut down for the night.  However, I would lilke to just send my love to you all and I have a quick word...

Zach
You can keep the snow in Wyoming.  ;D How are you my young pal?  Miss you  ;)

Karma.  You ae very wise.  Young eyes do not need to be seeing the television these days.  Let the children be children for as long as possible.  They have to grow up all too soon in rthe world as it is becoming. Your children are blessed to have you and Nards to care for them.  :-*

I have washed some bedroom curtains today and thankfully they are dry and back up. Praise God!

It was dark early tonight, about 8 p.m.  Autumn is here, I can feel the chill in the air.

I am thinking of the folks in Florida.  We have had some problems over here too, although on a smaller scale, in Cornwall whole livelihoods are being destroyed by the extreme weather conditions.

As  I settle down quietly and prepare for bed tonight I am thinking how very lucky I am living in the Midlands of England.  I do thank God.

God bless you all.
Love,
Jenny.

Revival: Living at a Fever Pitch

And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.
-Colossians 3:23

We live at a fever pitch, and whether we are erecting buildings,
laying highways, promoting athletic events, celebrating special days
or welcoming returning heroes we always do it with an exaggerated
flourish. Our building will be taller, our highway broader, our
athletic contest more colorful, our celebration more elaborate and
more expensive than would be true anywhere else on earth. We walk
faster, drive faster, earn more, spend more and run higher blood
pressure than any other people in the world.

In only one field of human interest are we slow and apathetic: that
is the field of personal religion. There for some strange reason our
enthusiasm lags. Church people habitually approach the matter of
their personal relation to God in a dull, half-hearted way which is
altogether out of keeping with their general temperament and wholly
inconsistent with the importance of the subject.  Of God and Men,
3-4.

"Lord, revive my zeal for things of God. I get caught up in the
fever pitch of so many things. Help me to set my priorities right
and give myself more completely to enhancing my relationship with
You. Amen."

Etta Sue, this is a heat pump and not a tradiitional air conditioner.  When we lived in Maryland I remember having that problem.

Sonja, it is certainly too early for snow.  BRRRR!

My team i(University of Georgia) is winning their game.  We are now in the 3rd Qtr and it is 27 to 7 over Georgia Southern University.  Papa John, I saw that Vanderbilt was beaten today.

We just had this the other day but it seems a good hymn to play tonight while we're seeing news of this hurricane on TV and seeing helpless yachts and sailboats drifting without any anchor in the storm.

Let's be sure that we have an anchor that will hold.

The Anchor Holds
(Click to hear music)

Words and Music by Lawrence Chewning and Ray Boltz 1994 - Word Music

I have journeyed through the long, dark night
Out on the open sea,
By faith alone, sight unknown,
And yet His eyes were watching me.

The Anchor holds, though the ship is battered.
The Anchor holds, though the sails are torn.
Well I have fallen on my knees,
as I faced the raging sea,
But the Anchor holds, in spite of the storm.
I've had visions and I've had dreams;
Well I've even held them in my hands,
But I never knew those dreams could slip right through
Like they were only grains of sand.

O, the Anchor holds, though the ship is battered.
The Anchor holds, though the sails are torn.
Well I have fallen on my knees,
as I faced the raging seas.
O, the Anchor holds, in spite of the storm.
Now I have been young, but I am older now.
O and there has been beauty these eyes have seen;
But it was in the night, when I faced the storms of my life.
Oh, that's where God proved His love to me.

The Anchor holds, though the ship is battered.
The Anchor holds, though the sails are torn.
I have fallen, fallen down on my knees
as I faced the raging seas.
But the Anchor holds; O, in spite of the storm.
I said I've fallen, fallen down on my knees
as I faced the raging seas;
But the Anchor holds, in spite of the storm.

Thanks for the posts today.  Soni, lovely devotional on Prayer.  Great links too!

I'm so concerned about our friends in Florida.  Let's keep praying for them.  Let's not forget the poor families in Russia as well who have been going through such a terrible time after the hostage taking.

I miss Janet.  I hope that she's having a good time.

Now, it's time to lock the door.

Check out our two new challenges for September as well.
