I had a nice chat tonight on Yahoo with Soni and so I'm very late.  Please pray with me that our young Zac will not be ill for too long.

Therefore, we're having a repeat tonight of our devotional.  This one I always get a blessing from so I do pray that you will also.

Morning Devotional...

The Old Guide Book

In the years of long ago when I was a child, I often heard my mother sing a hymn that somehow I understood was very dear to her. Sometimes I would find her sitting alone singing it with tears on her cheeks. As the years rolled by its importance to her seemed to increase.

Some would have thought it a very strange choice had they heard her quietly sing it. Most people who knew her would have been surprised to hear her sing at all, for she never sang in public. Not even with the congregation. While others sang, she would follow in her hymn book intently with her eyes and I suspect with her heart. Her lips would not move, nor her tongue utter a single syllable. Those who knew our circumstances (although they were probably few in number) would have been astonished at the words:

When upon life's billows you are tempest-tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings-- Name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Over the years we had accumulated few of this world's goods and it was a constant struggle for her to feed and clothe the family.

What then were the blessings that a very poor Irish woman could sing about? They certainly had no value on the stock market and could not be accumulated in the local branch of the Belfast Savings Bank.  The "passbook" in which the blessings she sang about were listed was an old black leather covered Guide Book.  On the spine in faded gold letters were two words which made up the title, "Holy Bible". The pages were more worn than the cover. Once white, they had long since yellowed with wear and age and tear drops.

My mother probably never heard of John Locke, philosopher and writer, but she would have agreed with the truth of his statement when he said, "It has God for its Author, salvation for its end, without any mixture of error, for its matter: it is all pure, sincere, nothing too much and nothing wanting."

Theologians refer to the Bible as God's Special Revelation to Man. The wonders of creation testify to us of God's unsurpassed wisdom and power, but the Holy Scriptures tell us so much more about God, and it helps us to understand ourselves if only we are willing to accept its teachings. In it we see that God is holy, just and righteous and at the same time, gracious, loving and merciful.

Woodrow Wilson, twenty-eighth president of the United States, spoke truly when he said, "The Bible is the one supreme source of revelation of the meaning of life."

Paul, the apostle, reminds us in 2 Timothy 3:16 and 17 that: "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."

It is true that ungodly men have attacked the word of God and tried to destroy it down through the ages.  Many have used or attempted to use "facts" of science to disprove its truth. In 1861 the French Academy of Science published a booklet listing over fifty supposed "facts" to contradict the Bible. Atheists of the day rubbed their hands in glee as they ridiculed the Christian faith. Today all of the claimed "facts" are rejected by men of science.

In the early and mid-nineteenth century, archeologists said that they were confident that their findings would discredit the accuracy of the Bible. A few years ago, I heard a lecture by a professor of the Department of Archeology at the University of Toronto in which he said that the Bible is now considered by many archeologists to be the most reliable guidebook to finding remains of old cities etc. in the middle-east.

Yes, the Bible is an old guide book. In fact it is the only truly reliable guide book on the path of life.

An ancient writer said: "Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105 NKJV)

Despite the attacks of Satan and puny men, "We rest upon the impregnable rock of Scripture". (Winston Churchill)

THE BIBLE STANDS
(Click title for music)

The Bible stands like a rock undaunted
'Mid the raging storms of time;
Its pages burn with the truth eternal,
And they glow with a light sublime.

Chorus:
The Bible stands tho the hills may tumble,
It will firmly stand when the earth shall crumble,
I will plant my feet on its firm foundation,
For the bible stands.

The Bible stands like a mountain tow'ring
Far above the works of men;
Its truth by none ever was refuted,
And destroy it they never can.

The Bible stands, and it will forever
When the world has passed away;
By inspiration it has been given;
All its precepts I will obey.

The Bible stands ev'ry test we give it
For its Author is divine;
By grace alone I expect to live it
And to prove it and make it mine.

There are many "great and exceeding precious  promises" (2 Peter 1:4) found in the Old Guide Book we call the Bible. There are countless multitudes of blessings in this grand old book. One outshines all the others and accepting it is the condition for receiving and enjoying all the other blessings. It is described many times over. We shall look at only a few instances where it is mentioned.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." (John 3:16, 37)

What love God expressed to us in the coming of His Eternal Son in the body of human flesh! True God and true Man to suffer the penalty of sin upon the cross. What a blessing to know that those who repent of their rebellion and sin and trust Him as Lord and Saviour possess eternal life.

Paul in his Epistle to the Ephesians 2:4-10 gives us a great summary of this wonderful blessing. "But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."

You can enter into this the greatest blessing that can ever be known to mankind. Why not do so now by faith in Jesus Christ?

"Behold, now is the accepted time; behold now is the day of Salvation." (2 Corinthians 6:2b).

Jack Scott loved his Lord! He passed away on January 10, 2001 after a lengthy illness.
He is missed greatly by his family.

10 a.m. England.

A  nice bright sunny morning here in Birmingham England., though it is extremely cold and my windows were streaming this morning Pat.....ugh! ..All "done and dusted" now however.

PatYour devotional reminded me of a similar chorus from sunday School days...

"Count your blessings,
Name them one by one,
Count your blessings
See what God Has done.

Count your blessings
Name them one by one,
And it will surprise you
What the Lord has done."

Jack's mother had a special bank book, she had the "Cheque book of the Bank of Faith"...quote Spurgeon.

Ria.
Hello.  Hope you feel a bit better today dear.  God Bless.  See you later.

Zach.  I am praying for you and I have just asked my dear friend Carol who lives near me to pray for you., also my daughter Helen is praying..O.K???? Surely all these prayers must bring a miracle.  Love you sweetheart. Have a good rest and get well soon.  We will all wait patiently for you.  Don't rush back and overdo things. Just know you are in our hearts and on our minds all the time.

Oh dear, ...tears for Zach... :-*

Just a quick hello to all of you!

Ria, hope that toe does well.  I'm sure that's troublesome.

Pat - GET SOME REST!!!!!

Bye now.  Busy weekend ahead, but I get to bang on that guitar, and that's always fun.  Until the strings break....
I survived open heart surgery.... :)

Check out my blog at www.bernardshuford.com.

karmat

Good morning all!  TAS is still sleeping soundly  :o so I am enjoying a few minutes of peace and quiet.   :)

Hope Zach is feeling better, and Ria I am glad to hear that you slept well.  Hope that toe heals up nicely.  Steaming windows, Jenny. that had to be interesting.  I had a dorm room one time in college that the windows would freeze (on the inside).  Had to chip it away if you wanted to look out!

Anyway.  Have a glorious day.

Lost another post....getting to be a habit.  And wouldn't you know, I didn't have it on note pad.  It said something about my session had timed out.   :-\  Now I have it to always stay on and 9999 minutes if that is what it meant.  Computers????  They are smarter than we are.

Zac ~ Sorry you are under the weather.  Strep throat is really something.  Stay warm and down.  You will be up and about soon.  I will miss your lively posts, though.

Ria ~ There is nothing that hurts worse than a toe that hurts.  Well, I can name a few things but when your toe hurts, you hurt all over.  Just try wearing some ill-fitting shoes.  You hurt all over.  But each day, you will be better.  Count on it!!

Sarah ~ Sorry you lost your last game.  Now is the time to cheer the boys on!!

Today I am taking Jerry to his Neurologist in Indy.  I think I would rather drive anywhere but Indy.  I don't know why.  Really Indy is an easy place to drive in.  Maybe it was that I read a few years back that Indy is the worse city in the nation at rush hour.  And we will probably be driving back....at rush hour.

When I am shutting over the lights at night, that is the time that the kitties think is play time.  They chase each other throughout my house in this figure eight.  Even Ali got dangerous last night.  I heard this trampling and in the bedroom both of them came....up on the bed, across the bed and back on the floor.  I felt Ali graze my face and head!!!!  Whew!  Close call!  So I made sure they were both out of the room and shut the door!  I slept soooooo good!  Must try that again!!!

Good Morning. Thank you Pat for Jacks words this morning. I love to read what he has written. I remember that Song from when I was a child, Count your many blessings. My Grandma used to sing that.

37 * here this morning. Not too bad compared to some of thelower temps that all y-all have.

Ok I am off to prayers now and to check my email.

But First I want to tell Zach that I will be praying for you young man.

Hi everyone.  So sorry to read that Zachery has strep.  :'(   I don't believe I have ever had that so feel very fortunate.

Sarah, sorry that your basketball season is over but it sounds like you had a good overall season and had a lot of fun.  Do you participate in any spring sports?

Ria, good to see you posting and to know you had a good night.  Each day the toe will feel better and soon this all will just be an unpleasant memory.  Stay warm.

Jenny, we sang "Count Your Blessings" at Calvin Cove this week.  It is a great hymn and speaks volumes.

Etta Sue, have you tried hitting the back button on your browser when you timed out.  Sometimes you can go back and salvage what you have typed.  It doesn't always work but it always worth a try.  You are wise to shut your door at night and keep the cats outside.  We have never allowed our cat to stay in the house at night (he stays either on the screened-in porch in the warm weather or in the garage when it is cold).  During the day he spends most of his time in the house.

Good morning to Karma and Nards and to Marilyn.

I will be gone most of the afternoon as we have our SeniorNet PC Users Group Meeting this afternoon.  We are having a presentation on how to use databases for the types of things that retired folks may be interested in doing.  I was at the "Y" at 5:45 am this morning to get my walking done for the day and the week.  I had to go early as our Friday men's coffee group meets at 7:30 and I didn't want to be late.  I had time before that to come back home and work up some of my e-mail.

Pat, I read about the storm you all have experienced.  Sounds terrible and I do hope it is over now.

Sonifo

I am up early today.  I have so much to do, so I won't be on much today.

I wish you all a happy day!

Love Soni

Thanks for your prayers.

Great devotion, Pat!
((hug))

Judy McKenna

Soni - I see yoou are still online... its a busy day here as well., Friday's always are, arn't they.

Pat - Great devotional., as Jack's always are., I really love that hymn. "The Bible Stands".  The words are so meaningful.

I came across this awhile ago., and thought I'd share it with you: :D

What is the longest chapter in the Bible?
... Psalms 119

What is the shortest chapter in the Bible?
.... Psalms 117

Which chapter is in the centre of the Bible?
... Psalms 118

Fact:  There are 594 chapters before Psalms 118
Fact:  There are 594 chapters after Psalms 118
Add these numbers up and you get 1188.

The next time someone says they would like to find God's perfect will for their lives and that they want to be in the centre of His will, just send them to the centre of His Word!

What is the centre verse in the Bible?
...Psalms 118:8; "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man."  (NKJV)

Now., isn't that odd how this worked out (or was God in the centre of it)?..... This last part is my own comment.

Have a wonderful God blessed Friday! :D

Count Your Blessings
(Click to hear music)

Refrain
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your many blessings, see what God hath done!

When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Refrain

When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

Refrain

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.

Refrain

So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be disheartened, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey's end.

Refrain

Janet

Good morning/Afternoon!  We didn't get the big storm they predicted; just a tiny bit of rain and more than enough wind to dry it all off.   :(  We really need some moisture, or we may be getting dirt storms again.  There was a huge one in West Texas yesterday that caused a big pile-up of cars on the highways.

Ria, I am so glad you had a good night, and soon you will be rid of the big bandage and be able to wear your shoes again.  This, too, shall pass!  ;) :)  Just take it easy and heal.........love you!

Marilyn, stew is always good on a cold day.  I am thinking of a pot of chili.........mmmmm!

We have tickets to night for the play in Dodge City.  This one is titled "I Hate Hamlet" and I was told it is really funny.  Anyway, I will have to make arrangements for Abby, because I don't think a 6 year old would like to sit still that long.  And we don't have a ticket for her.

Oh, Zachery!  I'm so sorry you got that awful strep throat!  When I was your age, I had tonsillitis a lot, and can still remember how much it hurt.  Much love is being beamed your way, plus prayers to heaven for you to feel better quick!  We all love you here and enjoy your posts so much.  We don't want you sick or hurting. (((hugs))) to you, little one.

Hello, Jenny!  Stay warm!  ;D

Larry, I wish you or someone else who is computer savvy could help me figure out why my camera won't download now.  Sigh..........so frustrating.

Hi Soni!  Don't work too hard today!

Hi Pat!

Etta Sue, I just told Darrel this morning that computers are NOT for people who don't like change!  About the time you learn how to do something, everything changes!  Grrrr!  But none of us would give up our computers, that's for sure!

Gotta run!  I am going to try to download my camera on Darrel's computer.  If that doesn't work.......then I just don't know.  I plan to take the card to Wal-Mart today and get the photos that way, if all else fails.  Curtis tried to help me last night, we downloaded new drivers from Kodak, but still no photos.

See you later, folks!

Ready to go now just need to put on my shoes. The dogs are growling at each other protecting their individual toys.  I will have to put them up before I leave as I don't want to come home to Happydogs fur all over the place. He is the long haired one. going tor ead more now.

Ria Glad you are feeling better this evening...better still tomorrow I pray.

Janet Hello.  Enjoy the play.  I used to love live theatre, especially visits to the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre at Stratford on Avon., I actually passed the audition for the Birmingham Theatre School.  That's another story!...Just think I might have appeared on the "big" screen.  I did take part in a Television serial, one episode.

Hello Everyone...

I'm slow in getting here today.  My back has been bothering me and if you could see me, hobbling around with a walking stick, you'd see how bad it is!  LOL

I had errands to run this morning and things to do and now I must run the vacuum around.  My house is "boggin'"

I'm not going to greet each and every one of you as I have a lady coming in just a few minutes but wanted to say how nice it is to listen to that music, Larry!  thanks for it.

Also, great to see you too, Paulette.

Everyone else, you know I'm thinking about you.

Talk to you later...

I just wanted to say a quick "hello" and off I go again.

Lila Mae
is now learning how to open doors :o so I have to figure out how to keep her from opening up the basement door.

Got any ideas? ??? I do have an (((alarm))) on it so everytime she touches it, it goes off.

We have 4 paper routes to do today.
<soni wishes people would put numbers on their house>

Troy is going to shave his head, legs and back today. ((buzzzzz)) Ugh!  I guess I will have to deal with it.  He took off 2 seconds on his 50 free :D while tapering this week.  He will be swimming tomorrow.

Mike is getting off early today so we will probably watch a movie or something.

I hope you all have a great day.

Doesn't Geordie know how to vaccuum yet?  ;)

HAHAHA!  When I get the vacuum out, Geordie tries to eat it!  He growls and growls!  He absolutely hates that thing.

The Holy Spirit: We Need Him More and More

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name,
He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things
that I said to you.
--John 14:26

I have reason to suspect that many people are trying to give
leadership in Christian churches today without ever having yielded to
the wise and effective leading of the Holy Spirit. He truly is the
Spirit of wisdom, understanding and counsel. He alone can bring the
gracious presence of the living God into our lives and ministries.

You may think it out of place for me to say so, but in our churches
today we are leaning too heavily upon human talents and educated
abilities. We forget that the illumination of the Holy Spirit of God
is a necessity, not only in our ministerial preparation, but in the
administrative and leadership functions of our churches.

We need an enduement of the Spirit of God! We sorely need more of His
wisdom, His counsel, His power, His knowledge. We need to reverence
and fear the Almighty God. If we knew the full provision and the
spiritual anointing that Jesus promised through the Holy Spirit, we
would be far less dependent on so many other things.... I have said
it before, and I say it now: We need the Holy Spirit more and more,
and we need human helps less and less!  Jesus Is Victor!, 48.

"Lord, we're drowning in human helps, modern methods, business
principles, and growth strategies. But in all too many cases I fear
that we are indeed lacking the enduement of the Spirit of God. Send
us to our knees, Lord, that we might be reminded that we need Him
more and more. Amen."

Victory in Jesus
(Click to hear music)

Words and Music by Eugene. M. Bartlett

I heard an old, old story, How a Saviour came from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary To save a wretch like me;
I heard about His groaning, Of His precious blood's atoning,
Then I repented of my sins And won the victory.

Chorus:
O victory in Jesus, My Saviour, forever,
He sought me and bought me With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory, Beneath the cleansing flood.

I heard about His healing, Of His cleansing pow'r revealing,
How He made the lame to walk again And caused the blind to see;
And then I cried "Dear Jesus, Come and heal my broken spirit,"
And somehow Jesus came and bro't To me the victory.

Chorus:
O victory in Jesus, My Saviour, forever,
He sought me and bought me With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory, Beneath the cleansing flood.

I heard about a mansion He has built for me in glory,
And I heard about the streets of gold Beyond the crystal sea;
About the angels singing, And the old, redemption story,
And some sweet day I'll sing up there The song of victory.

Chorus:
O victory in Jesus, My Saviour, forever,
He sought me and bought me With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory, Beneath the cleansing flood.

Lord we ask for "Victory in Jesus" for healing Pat's back, we praise You Lord, amen.

We share our mutual woes,
Our mutual burdens bear;
And often for each other flows
The sympathizing tear.

Sorry about not paying closer attention to my post about Jane and I listening to "Amazing Love".  Bernard had the right version, "How can it be, That you my KING would die for me....,,, In all I do, I honor you".

I believe it has another title but I am not certain what that is.

My daughter Jane is almost eight and her love of Jesus and her faith amaze me.  God is constantly using Jane to remind me of what is most important in life.  Its easy for me to get caught up in keeping my eyes on this world and not looking up.

I can't imagine walking with Christ without fellowship. The encouragement that fellowship gives me keeps me looking up at God.

Thanks Chris!  I must appreciate that.

Ria, how are you today after your surgery?  I hope you'll be walking around soon!

Scott, thanks for coming in and clearing up the mystery of which song Jane was listening to.  I must look it up.  I don't know if I've heard it.

Now, speaking of Scott Fraser!!!   Make sure you see his awesome photos taken in the Amazon jungle near Manaus!  What wonderful faces on these people and they need to hear about our wonderful Saviour!
