Morning Devotional...

The Old Guide Book

In the years of long ago when I was a child, I often heard my mother sing a hymn that somehow I understood was very dear to her. Sometimes I would find her sitting alone singing it with tears on her cheeks. As the years rolled by its importance to her seemed to increase.

Some would have thought it a very strange choice had they heard her quietly sing it. Most people who knew her would have been surprised to hear her sing at all, for she never sang in public. Not even with the congregation. While others sang, she would follow in her hymn book intently with her eyes and I suspect with her heart. Her lips would not move, nor her tongue utter a single syllable. Those who knew our circumstances (although they were probably few in number) would have been astonished at the words:

Over the years we had accumulated few of this world's goods and it was a constant struggle for her to feed and clothe the family.

What then were the blessings that a very poor Irish woman could sing about? They certainly had no value on the stock market and could not be accumulated in the local branch of the Belfast Savings Bank.  The "passbook" in which the blessings she sang about were listed was an old black leather covered Guide Book.  On the spine in faded gold letters were two words which made up the title, "Holy Bible". The pages were more worn than the cover. Once white, they had long since yellowed with wear and age and tear drops.

My mother probably never heard of John Locke, philosopher and writer, but she would have agreed with the truth of his statement when he said, "It has God for its Author, salvation for its end, without any mixture of error, for its matter: it is all pure, sincere, nothing too much and nothing wanting."

Theologians refer to the Bible as God's Special Revelation to Man. The wonders of creation testify to us of God's unsurpassed wisdom and power, but the Holy Scriptures tell us so much more about God, and it helps us to understand ourselves if only we are willing to accept its teachings. In it we see that God is holy, just and righteous and at the same time, gracious, loving and merciful.

Woodrow Wilson, twenty-eighth president of the United States, spoke truly when he said, "The Bible is the one supreme source of revelation of the meaning of life."

Paul, the apostle, reminds us in 2 Timothy 3:16 and 17 that: "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."

It is true that ungodly men have attacked the word of God and tried to destroy it down through the ages.  Many have used or attempted to use "facts" of science to disprove its truth. In 1861 the French Academy of Science published a booklet listing over fifty supposed "facts" to contradict the Bible. Atheists of the day rubbed their hands in glee as they ridiculed the Christian faith. Today all of the claimed "facts" are rejected by men of science.

In the early and mid-nineteenth century, archeologists said that they were confident that their findings would discredit the accuracy of the Bible. A few years ago, I heard a lecture by a professor of the Department of Archeology at the University of Toronto in which he said that the Bible is now considered by many archeologists to be the most reliable guidebook to finding remains of old cities etc. in the middle-east.

Yes, the Bible is an old guide book. In fact it is the only truly reliable guide book on the path of life.

An ancient writer said: "Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105 NKJV)

There are many "great and exceeding precious  promises" (2 Peter 1:4) found in the Old Guide Book we call the Bible. There are countless multitudes of blessings in this grand old book. One outshines all the others and accepting it is the condition for receiving and enjoying all the other blessings. It is described many times over. We shall look at only a few instances where it is mentioned.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." (John 3:16, 37)

What love God expressed to us in the coming of His Eternal Son in the body of human flesh! True God and true Man to suffer the penalty of sin upon the cross. What a blessing to know that those who repent of their rebellion and sin and trust Him as Lord and Saviour possess eternal life.

Paul in his Epistle to the Ephesians 2:4-10 gives us a great summary of this wonderful blessing. "But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."

You can enter into this the greatest blessing that can ever be known to mankind. Why not do so now by faith in Jesus Christ?

"Behold, now is the accepted time; behold now is the day of Salvation." (2 Corinthians 6:2b).

Hi Folk; this passage from daily encounter has special relevance to me so I share it with you.

OPPORTUNITY DISGUISED

"Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all
people, especially to those who belong to the family of
believers " (Gal. 6:10, NIV).

A young man accepted for the African missionary field
reported at New York for "passage," but found on further
examination that his wife could not stand the climate in
Africa. He was heartbroken, but he prayerfully returned to
his home and determined to make all the money he could to
be used on spreading the Kingdom of God over the world. His
father, a dentist, had started to make, on the side, an
unfermented wine for the [church] communion service. The
young man took the business over and developed it until it
assumed vast proportions--his name was "Welch," whose
family still manufactures "grape juice."1

As the old saying goes, "When God closes one door, he opens
another." True, it can be a challenging time "waiting in
the hallway" for the next door to open, but as long as we
commit and trust our life and way to God every day, in good
time the next door will open. Of this we can be
sure--during the waiting time there is always a lesson of
some kind that God is seeking to teach us and wanting us to
learn.

Sometimes it takes a crushing disappointment to make us
effective and fruitful and ready for the next door to
open.

Suggested prayer: "Dear God, please help me to see in every
disappointment and setback what you are seeking to teach
me. Help me to learn that lesson so that I will be ready
and prepared for any new door or opportunity you may open
for me. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer.
Gratefully, in Jesus' name. Amen."

July 16 - SAVING FAITH

"What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?" (James 2:14).

The well-known apparent "conflict" between James and Paul focuses especially on this verse. The apostle Paul says emphatically: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9). Yet James, also an apostle, insists: "But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?" (James 2:20).

But no real conflict exists. In our text there is a definite article before the word "faith." James' question is, literally, "Can that faith save him?" This is obviously intended as a rhetorical question with a negative answer. In the context, James teaches that a "profession of faith" is not enough to produce salvation if that faith "have not works."

Since that kind of faith does not save, then what kind of faith does save? The answer is given by Paul in the very verses quoted above. "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that [i.e., that faith which is the inference in the original] not of yourselves: it is the gift of God." In other words, true saving faith is not a man-generated faith of some kind, it is a supernatural gift of God! And that faith does save, because it is part of the new nature implanted by the Holy Spirit when a new believer is born again. Furthermore, this faith does inevitably produce good works, for the verse following says that "we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:10).

Faith must be faith in something and true saving faith must be centered in the saving gospel of Jesus Christ as revealed in His inerrant Word. Such faith will inevitably result in a changed life and good works. That is the faith that saves. HMM

Good morning.  Yawn!!!!!  I was up late night before last but last night I went to bed early.  Took my Reader's Digest and turned the light off around 10:30 p.m. after bonking my nose a few times with the magazine.  The girls decided 6 a.m. was time to get up but I got up and put food in their bowl and went back to bed.  I woke at 8:30 a.m.  Yawn!  Now I am tired-er than if I only slept a few hours.

Jerry is coming over today.  I have some wall sockets that when I plug things in and then you look at them, they fall back out.  I guess they are worn out.  So we may go purchase a few of them to replace the ones that I use the most.  I am retired from electronics so if Jerry will show me the routine, I am sure I can replace them myself.

Then tomorrow is the last of the river rocks and the wedding. 

Then Sunday is church.

Hi everyone.

Welcome Afullquiver.to the CP site.  I hope you will post often.

Happy Birthday Ria.   Hope this is a special day for you and that you don't have to do any painting on your birthday.   

Our cat tried to chase after a little dog that came up in the back yard late last night and in so doing knocked out the bottom of one of the screens on the screened in porch.  This is the third time I have had to fix the screen, including once having to replace the entire screen and frame.  The last two times I just had to replace the mesh, which isn't a difficult job.  I bought some garden wire and an going to try to fix a barrier around the bottom of the screened in area to prevent this from happening in the future.  However, the wire is pretty heavy and a bit hard to deal with.  I also am not a bit handy in doing this type of thing.

Pat, another fine devotional from Jack recalling the example set by his mother.  Obviously she had a strong influence on him.  I enjoyed the other devotional pieces as well.

Janet, sure you will be happy to have Beth home again.  It was great that she was able to make the trip.  Hope you enjoy your time with Abby today.  Will she be in first grade this next year?

Guess I had better get back outside and see what I can do.  I have the screen fixed but not the protective barrier.

James 2:15-26

17   Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

19   You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe-- and tremble!
20   But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?
21   Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?
22   Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?
23   And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." And he was called the friend of God.
24   You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
25   Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?
26   For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

I got this in my email tonight, and after a rough day today with a bit of bad news thrown in for good measure...I had to laugh and it perked my spirits up a little bit.

The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to, after the worship service, ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building.  Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute.  The substitute wanted to know what to play. "Here's a copy of the service," he said impatiently. "But you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances." During the service, the minister paused and said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected, and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up.." At that moment, the substitute organist played "The Star Spangled  Banner." And that is how the substitute became the regular organist!

I can hardly [size=20]stand[/size] it.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!  Good one, Sue!

Another full day - 1/2 at work and a couple more hours this afternoon doing the town web stuff at home.  Now over the weekend I'll be able to get a little caught up with the housework...  maybe...    And next week is a full work week, covering for vacation.  Gene's son, daughter and son-in-law may be coming next week, too.  If they do they'll be staying at a bed-and-breakfast about 5 miles from us.  And my pantry, refrigerator and freezer are all almost bare.  I feel like Old Mother Hubbard.   

Good evening, I think I'd better get in here and post before Pat slams the door on my head.

I have been so busy since I got home from work. cleaning and finishing up my laundry. I still have to remove everything  form my china cabinet and clean that and al the stuff that goes in it. then do some ironing.  Not tonight though, Maybe not even tomorrow morning beforfe I go to work at 11am. I just don't seem to have the tiome to do all  that I want to do at home anymore.
