Morning Devotional...

Trials and Pain:
We May Expect Troubles

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.
--John 16:33

We are all idealists. We picture to ourselves a life on earth completely free from every hindrance, a kind of spiritual Utopia where we can always control events, where we can move about as favorites of heaven, adjusting circumstances to suit ourselves.

This we feel would be quite compatible with the life of faith and in keeping with the privileged place we hold as children of God.

In thinking thus we simply misplace ourselves; we mistake earth for heaven and expect conditions here below which can never be realized till we reach the better world above. While we live we may expect troubles, and plenty of them. We are never promised a life without problems as long as we remain among fallen men....

What then are we to do about our problems? We must learn to live with them until such time as God delivers us from them. If we cannot remove them, then we must pray for grace to endure them without murmuring. Problems patiently endured will work for our spiritual perfecting. They harm us only when we resist them or endure them unwillingly.
Of God and Men, pp. 121-122

"Lord, I'm so homesick for heaven. But until You allow me to come home, I do indeed 'pray for grace to endure [problems] without
murmuring.' Amen."

Thanks for that devotional, Pat.  There are many today who suggest that trials, pains, etc. are only from Satan, and that God absolutely must rid us of them if we ask Him.  But, as this that you've shared with us points out, trials and pains are used by God to perfect us.  Satan many indeed be the immediate source of them, but, willingly or unwillingly, Satan is thus being used by God for our everlasting good!  As Paul tells us in Romans 8, "What then shall we say to these things?  If God is for us,. who can be against us? He Who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?  Who shall bring a charge against God's elect?  It is God Who justifies.  Who is he who condemns?  It is Christ Who died, and furthermore is also risen, Who is even at the right hand of God, Who also makes intercession for us.  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?  Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?  As it is written:  'For Your sake we are killed all day long; we are accunted as sheep for the slaughter.'  Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him Who loved us.  For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Good Morning thank you  Pat for the devotional today.

QuoteWe are all idealists. We picture to ourselves a life on earth completely free from every hindrance, a kind of spiritual Utopia where we can always control events, where we can move about as favorites of heaven, adjusting circumstances to suit ourselves.

There are many including some of my family that think they are such good people that they are some of those favorites mentioned in the quote above. However they have completely missed the mark. They live in this Utopia that They are going to heaven without confessing Jesus as Lord of their lives. they think that God has nothing to do with their good fortune and blessing they receive. They think they did it all by themselves adjusting the circumstances as stated above.

Well I am out of here shortly to church, after that home for a short time and out again with Jan. We are doing our monthly fun day today instead of on a Thursday when I work for her. Today there will be no worry about whether we go overtime or not because I don't have to be anyplace on time.

While Shepards Watched Their Flocks
(Click to hear music)

"There were shepherds living out in the fields nearby,
keeping watch over their flocks at night."
Luke 2:8-9

Words: Nahum Tate, 1700

Music: "Christmas," George F. Handel

While shepherds watched their flocks by night,
All seated on the ground,
The angel of the Lord came down,
And glory shone around,
And glory shone around.

"Fear not!" said he, for mighty dread
Had seized their troubled mind.
"Glad tidings of great joy I bring
To you and all mankind
To you and all mankind.

"To you, in David's town, this day
Is born of David's line
A Savior, who is Christ the Lord,
And this shall be the sign,
And this shall be the sign.

"The heavenly Babe you there shall find
To human view displayed,
All meanly wrapped in swathing bands,
And in a manger laid,
And in a manger laid."

Thus spake the seraph and forthwith
Appeared a shining throng
Of angels praising God on high,
Who thus addressed their song,
Who thus addressed their song:

"All glory be to God on high,
And to the Earth be peace;
Good will henceforth from heaven to men
Begin and never cease,
Begin and never cease!"

O Holy Night
(Click to hear music)

Another version of the music

O Holy night, the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Til He appeared and the soul felt it's worth
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoyces
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn
Fall on your knees

O hear the angel voices
O night divine!
O night when Christ was born
O night divine!
O night, O night divine!

And in His Name, all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we
Let all within us praise his holy name
Christ is the Lord!
Their name forever praise we

Noel, Noel
O night, O night Divine
Noel, Noel
O night, O night Divine
Noel, Noel
O night, O holy Divine

I am among many who forgot to say Hi to Sarah when she stopped in the other day.  Hope you are reading and read that I am saying Hello today!  Sorry!

As for the supplements...funny, they could only be purchased from the chiropractor.  He said that WalMart, Meijers, Sam's Club wouldn't have them and perhaps a health food store might have but he has never seen the supplements he wants me to take any place other than his office.  That was a red flag for me.  I think I am biased on supplements because I know they aren't regulated or FDA approved.  Besides they aren't covered by insurance, at least not mine.

Fast Eddie ~ My insurance covers chiropractors but not as much as general practioners.  But my insurance changes after the first of the year and my deductible will be twice what it was this year plus if it is a non-PPO chiropractor it is double that.  Just hope that the PT I will be doing and can continue at home will work!!  Ha!  I am not old enough for Medicare....yet.  A couple of more years to do!

Church was awesome today.  So many people asked for CD's and Audio Cassette...busy!  The sermons were about Christ speaking to you.  He does!  From the Bible, He can speak to you all the time....it is up to you to read the Bible!

Marilyn

QuoteI think I am biased on supplements because I know they aren't regulated or FDA approved.

Etta Sue I personally I would rather rely on supplements and herbals than on the drugs that the FDA has approved. For every prescription drug has side effects, we may not feel them right away but if we are on that drug for any length of them there will be side effects in our bodies even though we ourselves do not notice them.

Yes I do take some prescription drugs. My hormones (yes is said hormones, and my asthma meds. I also take vitamins, Glucosamine/ Chondroitin/Msm, Fish Oil, C and Zinc,  and the Herbals. Like Ed said you can get the from Costco  at very reasonable prices if you get their brand. for example 300 of the calcium is $12.00 The same for the fish oil and the glucosamine and the multi. In large amounts that last a long time.

To each his own though. I am not pressing anyone to do as I do. You all have to make your own choices in life.

Hello!  Grandson Mark came up yesterday to spend some time with us and we are really enjoying having him around.  He's such a neat young man!  We let him open his main gift early (remote controlled helicopter) and he has been tweaking it and studying the manual, and starting the motor and revving it up---I wasn't sure it wouldn't come whizzing through the house at any minute!  ;)

Tonight is our cantata, and Diane and Jeff are coming up for it; Abby and Mark are here already.  My sister, her son and wife and kids are also coming.  We are hoping for a good turnout, as so many of us are in it that the sanctuary will look pretty sparse of people if we don't have quite a few guests!  :)

Larry, sample another piece of that fudge for me!  Boy, I am not faring so well with my "NO sugar" plan these past few days----and Christmas is still a whole week away!

I must think about packing!  We leave for our trip to Mexico (Copper Canyon) on the 27th.

I must get ready for tonight---need to cut up some things I made (with Mark's help) for refreshments tonight, and still have to change my clothes, too.  We are to be there at 5:00.  See you later!

Papa John, good to see you popping in!  I am disappointed that our church is not having services next Sunday, but we are having a candlelight Christmas Eve service.  I think I might attend the services at another church on Christmas morning.

Ohhhh, you're going to be down in Mexico when our son Andrew is Janet.

He has to leave here on Boxing Day.  So we're not able to have much of a "family" Christmas this year.

Hi everyone.

We have had a nice day.  We went to church this morning and came home for about 90 minutes and then went to a friends house for a nice afternoon.  The lady is the widow of one of lthe men I had coffee with for several years until his death about 3 years ago.  There were about 4 couples and a widow and widorer.  She always makes these delicious things to eat and we just had a great time.

Janet, sure wish I could be there to hear your Christmas cantata this evening.  I know it makes it extra special to have so many of your family there to share the experience with you.

Marilyn, do you have to belong to Costco to get the supplements?  Hope you have had a nice time with Jan.

Etta Sue, I love that graphic and it looks like something that our cat would do.

Papa John, our church is also having not only an eleven pm candlelight and communion service but also a worship service on Christmas morning.  However, there will be just one combined service and no Sunday School.  One of our ministers said this morning this will be the first Sunday Christmas in eleven years.

Tbear, sure hope Rolan is feeling better today.

Hi Anna, Pat, and Ed.  Hope I haven't missed anyone.

Pat

Angels We Have Heard on High
(Click to hear music)

"A great company of the heavenly host
appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
'Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men,
on whom His favor rests.'"
Luke 2:13-14

Words: Traditional French carol (Les Anges dans nos Campagnes). Translated from French to English by James Chadwick (1813-1882); appeared in Crown of Jesus, 1862

Music: "Gloria (Barnes)," French carol melody; arranged by Edward S. Barnes

Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o'er the plains,
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains.

Refrain

Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly song?

Refrain

Come to Bethlehem and see
Christ Whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee,
Christ the Lord, the newborn King.

Refrain

See Him in a manger laid,
Whom the choirs of angels praise;
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid,
While our hearts in love we raise.

Refrain

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An alternate translation, by George Ratcliffe Woodward (1848-1934):

Shepherds in the field abiding,
Tell us when the seraph bright
Greeted you with wondrous tiding,
What you saw and heard that night.

Refrain

We beheld—it is no fable—
God incarnate, King of bliss,
Swathed and cradled in a stable,
And the angel strain was this:

Refrain

Choristers on high were singing
Jesus and His virgin birth,
Heavenly bells the while a-ringing
"Peace, good will to men on earth."

Refrain

Larry Yes you do have to be a member at Costco to do any kind of shopping there but it is well worth the $45. for the membership. I took out my membership when I went to my regular drug store and my meds were going to cost $47. I came home and looked them up on Costco and they were $11.00 That was for the pain pills. While I was  there waiting to fill my prescription I got to looking around at the supplements and did a little more shopping.

We had a very nice dinner at the Marina Cafe, I had  Fillet of Sole and home fried potatoes and salad home made french bread and Cole slaw.

Papa John

We have had a wonderful day.  This morning the sermon was about Christmas, Fact and Fiction.  The conclusion was that when we sort through some things which are fact and some traditions which are fiction the important thing is in the name "Emanuel" ,  God with us.

Matt 1:23  "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"-- which means, "God with us." (NIV)

I am happy today because Jesus was born.  He lived.  He taught.  He did miracles.  He died on the cross.  He was raised from the dead.  He ascended into Heaven.   He left his Spirit.  He is coming again.  GOD IS WITH US!

Larry, I think we are following the pattern you have for next Sunday.  Saturday night at eleven until midnight.  On Sunday morning we are not having Sunday school, just one big service.  We usually have two.  I am really looking forward to having all the family for our Christmas dinner.

Cornelia and I have kept up our schedule of Bible reading the Bible out loud.  This will be our third year in a row.  Beginning in January we plan to begin again and use the old King James Version this time.  This year we have been reading The Message.  God bless you all this Sunday night.

Papa John

Eph 2:8-9  For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast.(NIV)

He will have another set of x - rays done so ... continue to keep him in prayer !! So, I am heading to bed so good night all !!  See you all sooon !!

Jeanne Lee

Didn't get on at all last night.  I just had to watch "Sound of Music" (for the umpteenth time) and it didn't go off until 11:00.  I sure hope nobody decides to do a remake of that one.

And tonight I had to watch Tom Brokaw's "To War and Back" - local boys, some of whom I know, and scenes from Glens Falls.

This morning our church service was very different.  There was a video "Christmas in Corinth" - a real riot.  All about what it would be like if Jesus were born here today, with a news team announcing about angels singing, a full inn, a birth in a barn, and interviews of "believers" and "skeptics".  All parts played, of course by members of our congregation.  And the "inn" was a local bed and breakfast owned by a family in our congregation.

And right now, if Gene were still alive I'd strangle him.  I brought all the Christmas boxes in from the shed and I have all kinds of decorations and light strings and garlands - both indoor and outdoor, spread out on my living room floor.  Only one thing is missing...  the tree!!!.   :clobber:  I hope tomorrow when it gets light I'll be able to find it tucked in some obscure corner out there.

Ohh, Jeanne...  I had to watch "The Sound of Music" last night too.  I still enjoy it so much.  Sitting here giggling at your exasperation of having no tree!  :ticked:

Pat, that's the kind of music that will always sound beautiful.  I couldn't help but wonder while I was watching it if any of the Von Trapp family living now near here in Vermont ever see it and if they do how they feel about the actors playing the parts.

Janet

Hi, Jeanne--hope you find that tree tomorrow!  I'll bet your part of the world is beautiful with all that snow!

Our cantata went really well, and we had a full (or nearly full) house!  The people really enjoyed it, they said, and the kids, of course, were darling.  We had eight little angels, three shepherds and two kings.  They looked adorable and all did their parts well, and sang out on "Away in a Manger."  Afterward, we had nice refreshments and time to visit a little bit.

Larry, I wish you could have been here, too.  I know you love music and are very talented in that area.  It was a wonderful experience to be in the cantata with Darrel, as neither of us had been in any kind of musical program since high school.  He always sang in Boys' Glee Club, and at my school I sang with the chorus.....many years ago.  (Back when the earth was cooling!)

Mark made a video of the cantata and also took quite a few stills with my camera.  So maybe I can share some with you later.  I will enjoy seeing and hearing it, as I'm sure it is a little different from the audience than from the platform.  ;)

Curtis is coming home on Wednesday, it will be good to see him again.  I hope to drive around town one night this week to look at the lights.  I enjoy that.

Well, time to sign off for another day!  Pleasant dreams, everyone!
