Morning Devotional.

Matt. 6:8.  "Therefore do not be like them, for your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him."

If God already knows all your needs before you ask, then why should you ask?  That question springs from our habit of thinking of God as though He were just another human being.  We ask people for things because we've been taught by our parents that we can only have things if we ask for them.

God has a different purpose in our prayers.  He wants our hearts - He wants us to be aware of Him as the loving and all-powerful Source for the supply of all our needs and wants.  Simply put, Her wants us to relate to Him, to walk with Him, and to love and adore Him.  Not because He needs us - but because we need Him.  It's His love to us that would have us to pray, for in that way we fulfill the greatest need of our lives, the need to relate in all things to our heavenly Father.

Sweet Hour of Prayer
(Click to hear music)

Pray continually.
1 Thessalonians 5:17

Music: William B. Bradbury, Golden Chain (New York: 1861)

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father's throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief
And oft escaped the tempter's snare
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
The joys I feel, the bliss I share,
Of those whose anxious spirits burn
With strong desires for thy return!
With such I hasten to the place
Where God my Savior shows His face,
And gladly take my station there,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
Thy wings shall my petition bear
To Him whose truth and faithfulness
Engage the waiting soul to bless.
And since He bids me seek His face,
Believe His Word and trust His grace,
I'll cast on Him my every care,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
May I thy consolation share,
Till, from Mount Pisgah's lofty height,
I view my home and take my flight:
This robe of flesh I'll drop and rise
To seize the everlasting prize;
And shout, while passing through the air,
"Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer!"

March 21 - The Light of the Word

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105).

As the sun provides physical light for the world, so Jesus Christ is spiritually "the light of the world" (John 8:12). However, we clearly can see His light only through the light holder, the lamp, as it were, of His written Word. The Word, therefore, is a lamp and, since it contains and reveals the light, is also a light in its own right. Without the Holy Scriptures, this world would lie in the deepest darkness, but "The entrance of thy words giveth light" (Psalm 119:130).

The Lord Jesus Christ is the living Word, and "without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not" (John 1:3-5). Although He "was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world" (John 1:9), when He Himself came into the world, those who were made by Him refused to receive Him. "Men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil" (John 3:19).

Just so, although the written word has come into the world, the world does not receive it, either. The lamp and the light of the written word have been in the world (in complete and final form) for 1900 years, but men still reject and ridicule it, and the world still lies in darkness. Nevertheless, for those who receive it, there is wonderful light. "Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light" (John 12:35-36).

God's Word always brings light. His first spoken Word was: "Let there be light" (Genesis 1:3), and wherever He speaks, God sees the light, and it is good! HMM

Good Monday morning, everyone!  What's on your agenda for today?

I've had my workout and my breakfast, now after I catch up here, I'll see what else needs my attention.  The struggle to save Terri is ongoing.  Our president has done his part.  I still cannot understand why so many people are pro-death.

This is Passion Week, and I plan to watch our DVD of The Passion again this week.  It's hard to watch, but it wasn't easy for Jesus to die, either.  All of life is not easy.

This afternoon our Red Hatters are going to the Care Home where my mom lives, for their Ladies' Tea.  We will take extra Red Hat regalia to put on the ladies, read poems and such, and just have a good time entertaining them.  I hope several of our Red hats show up for it.

Not much happening in my world today, hope yours is peaceful as well..

Geordie and I just walked down the street to where the trucks have been parked while they've been working on the cable and only one truck is still there but I asked the fellow who was there and he said that there are three other linked locations nearby so it was (and still is) a pretty big cable proble.

I was disconnected four times trying to post the card for Dakota Parks.

Sorry you're still not feeling well, Marilyn.  That's not nice at all.  Get well soon.

I'm going to post this and see if it posts.

Hi everyone from an overcast but not very cold Georgia.  We have severe storm warnings out for tomorrow but apparently the weatherman is saying the system coming through may miss us.  The lawn people are hear mowing the lawn and tidying up outside.  Pat talked with the housekeeper, who was scheduled to be here today and rescheduled her for tomorrow.  I think Pat is feeling some better as she felt like going for a quick hair appointment as she needed to get it cut.  She went ahead and had it set, which she normally doesn't do, as she didn't feel like dealing with it when she got home.  She had no temperature this morning so hopefully she is on the mend now.

Marilyn, my wife wasn't up to getting out yesterday so missed the "Messiah".  It was a wonderful morning and it went very well.  We had 5 members of the Atlanta Symphony Chorus joining us to sing the courses and to perform the solo parts.  We had a nine piece chamber orchestra, including a piccolo trumpet and tympanni.  We ended with the Hallelujah Chorus, which was magnificant.  I wish you all could have been there.  I hope we get a CD from the recording that was done and if so maybe I can put up a piece or two on my website as a mp3 file and share it with you.  Of course, we are still awaiting the CDs from the Christmas performance.

Al, thought that was a fine devotional today.  I had never thought of God in exactly that light and that makes a lot of sense as to why we should pray about everything.

Sonja, I have the same problem with my desktop in needing some additional memory.  My son has acquired some from eBay and may give me his cast off 128 megs, which would help as only have 256 megs on this computer.  My laptop has 512 megs and it is much faster.

Happy Birthday Dakota Parks.

Pat, glad to see your postings and hope they were able to fix your cable problems.  I know how frustrating that can be.

designtrade, sure hope your family is feeling better today.  Being ill certainly interferes with what we want to be doing.

Marilyn, glad to see that you are going to be able to get out today.

Janet, very nice that the Red Hatters are going to visit the nursing home.  I am sure they will bring a lot of smiles to the folks there.

I know Papa John hasn't posted for a few days but I saw a photo on SeniorNet that lets me know that he and Cornelia are safely in Florida for their time in the sun.  Papa John, when you look in sure hope you have nice weather while you are down there.  I saw you riding Norm's motorized scooter.  My daughter-in-law has one of those and they are really a great aid in getting around.

Think it is time for a rest as went to the "Y" this morning and walked for 25 minutes on the treadmill and now I am tired.

Pat

I wonder what the next step will be after that very late vote last night over Terry Schiavo.  (Sorry if that's not spelled correctly)

I just heard that there will be a court hearing in about an hour with both her parents and her husband attending.

Pastoral Ministry: A New Type of Preacher

But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to
myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry
which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of
the grace of God.
--Acts 20:24

If Christianity is to receive a rejuvenation, it must be by other
means than any now being used. If the Church in the second half
of this century is to recover from the injuries she suffered in
the first half, there must appear a new type of preacher. The
proper, ruler-of-the-synagogue type will never do. Neither will
the priestly type of man who carries out his duties, takes his
pay and asks no questions, nor the smooth-talking pastoral type
who knows how to make the Christian religion acceptable to
everyone. All these have been tried and found wanting.

Another kind of religious leader must arise among us. He must be
of the old prophet type, a man who has seen visions of God and
has heard a voice from the Throne. When he comes (and I pray God
there will be not one but many), he will stand in flat
contradiction to everything our smirking, smooth civilization
holds dear. He will contradict, denounce and protest in the name
of God and will earn the hatred and opposition of a large segment
of Christendom. Such a man is likely to be lean, rugged, blunt-
spoken and a little bit angry with the world. He will love Christ
and the souls of men to the point of willingness to die for the
glory of the One and the salvation of the other. But he will
fear nothing that breathes with mortal breath.  The Size of the
Soul, 128-129.

"Lord, in the first half of this current century this need is
even greater. Send to Your church today many who have 'seen
visions of God and...heard a voice from the Throne.' Amen."

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. (AP) - The parents of Terri Schiavo asked a judge to reinsert the brain-damaged woman's feeding tube Monday, following an extraordinary, daylong political fight that consumed both chambers of Congress and prompted the president to rush back to the White House.

An attorney for Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, arrived at federal district court in Tampa and filed a request for an emergency injunction to keep their daughter fed.

When the attorney, David Gibbs II, was asked if he had any indication when the judge would rule on the request, he said: "I have no way to know, just that it's in the hands of the court."

The House early Monday, following a move by the Senate, passed a bill to let the woman's parents ask a federal judge to prolong Schiavo's life by reinserting her feeding tube. President Bush signed the measure less than an hour later.

Schiavo's husband, Michael Schiavo, said he was outraged that lawmakers and the president were intervening in the contentious right-to-die battle. He has battled for years with his wife's parents over whether she should be permitted to die or kept alive through the feeding tube.

"This is a sad day for Terri. But I'll tell you what: It's also is a sad day for everyone in this country because the United States government is going to come in and trample all over your personal, family matters," he told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Monday.

Michael Schiavo has not responded to repeated interview requests from The Associated Press.

Outside the hospice where his daughter entered her fourth day without food or water, Bob Schindler told reporters "I'm numb, I'm just totally numb. This whole thing, it's hard to believe it."

A shout of joy was heard from the crowd outside the hospice when news of the House bill's passage came. Among those cheering was David Bayly, 45, of Toledo, Ohio: "I'm overjoyed to see the vote and see Terri's life extended by whatever amount God gives her."

When dawn broke Monday, fewer than a dozen demonstrators remained at the hospice, but the area bustled with television lights, cameras and reporters covering the saga.

The 41-year-old woman's feeding tube was removed Friday on a Florida judge's order. Schiavo could linger for one or two weeks if the tube is not reinserted - as has happened twice before, once on a judge's order and once after Gov. Jeb Bush passed "Terri's Law," which was later declared unconstitutional.

George Felos, a lawyer for Michael Schiavo, did not return repeated phone messages seeking comment Monday. The voicemail box of George Greer, the Florida circuit judge who presides over the case, was full and didn't accept messages.

Terri Schiavo suffered brain damage in 1990 when her heart stopped briefly because of a chemical imbalance. She can breathe on her own, but has relied on the feeding tube to keep her alive.

Court-appointed doctors say she is in a persistent vegetative state with no hope of recovery. Her husband says she would not want to be kept alive in that condition, but her parents insist she could recover with treatment.

Bob Schindler visited his daughter late Sunday and said he noticed the effects of dehydration on her. He said she appeared to be getting tired, but eventually responded to his teasing by making a face at him.

"It tells us she's still with us," he said.

Brian Schiavo, Michael's brother, said he spent Sunday afternoon with his brother and Terri at the hospice, but Terri did not move or make any noises. "Anybody that thinks that she talks and responds, they need to have a mental health examination," he said.

The bill passed in Congress applies only to Schiavo and would allow a federal court to review the case. The House passed the bill on a 203-58 vote after calling lawmakers back for an emergency Sunday session. The Senate approved the bill Sunday by voice vote. President Bush cut short a visit to his Texas ranch to return to the White House.

"In cases like this one, where there are serious questions and substantial doubts, our society, our laws and our courts should have a presumption in favor of life," President Bush said in a statement after signing the bill.

A crowd of about 50 people prayed and sang outside the hospice on Sunday. One man played "Amazing Grace" on a trumpet, as a pickup truck pulled a trailer bearing 10-foot-high replicas of the stone Ten Commandments tablets and a huge working version of the Liberty Bell.

Gov. Bush, praised the actions of Congress. "We in government have a duty to protect the weak, disabled and vulnerable," he said in a statement Monday. "I appreciate the efforts of state and federal lawmakers on both sides of the aisle who have taken this duty to heart."

It looked warm today because of the sunshine but it wasn't.  I got my partial plate back but I am not happy with it.  Needs to be filed down some more.  I think the girl wanted to go home so she rushed me out the door.

Chris, since I haven't been listening to the news, thank you for the article on Terri S.  I said something to my dentist this morning and he thought she had the right to live but congress should be doing other things than voting on issues that the State has already voted upon.  I still think that Terri S. has a right to live and I heard that she did state her wishes to her mother after the feeding tube was removed.  So sad.  Sounds like she isn't brain dead after all...shame on those court-appointed doctors.

Ouch! Marilyn, this is not only keeping you from the joy of working, but also must be a financial strain. I care, Marilyn.

Speaking of financial strains, looks like above insurance my stint in the hospital will be more than $1,500. Ouch, again!

Y'all have a good evening.

Several ladies showed up for the Red Hat Tea at the care home, and I think every resident lady was there, plus one man!  They all enjoyed it, I think.  We all brought our extra red hat stuff, and put them on the ladies, there were so many of them we all took off our own hats and stuff and put them on the ladies.  Then we took photos of them.  They all had big smiles when we handed them a mirror to see how lovely they looked.  They may just start their own Red Hats chapter there in the care home.  ;D

Etta Sue, isn't that frustrating, you wait and wait for an appointment, pay and arm and a leg for it, then get the bum's rush? >:( Grrr.

Eight people dead in a school shooting in Red Lake, MN.  A boy went berserk and killed his grandparents, then went to school and shot the others, then himself.  I always ask, when I hear things like this----why couldn't he have STARTED with himself and let the others live?

Too much bad news today. :-\  Makes it hard to keep your focus and your optimism.  But I WILL, with God's help.

Oh, Ruth Ann, I'm so sorry about that big hospital bill.  OUCH is right!

There were some tornados and tornado warnings to the East of us this afternoon/evening, but we just had wind and a little rain.  It sure has turned cold, though.

This being sick is really for the birds. Fanancially it hurts more than I can say at this time.
I just spoke to the lady that is remodling that little houe and he told me not to get my hopes up she is leaning toward someone she knows. But God can change her mind about that. So I am still searching for a place and there is a little 1 bedroom coming up next month that I will take a look at too.

If I post now, will it end in the vast blankness of outer space?  Now certain when the door gets closed....

A typical spring day here on the island.  Rain, sun and more rain.  Things are green and buds are budding.

I am still struggling with tests and health problems.  So not bothering to post much anymore.  Do come to read now and again.  Sorry others are also having health problems.  Guess it goes with the stage of life we are now sharing.

So many sad things on the news these days.  Read this and thought it might help:

Corrie ten Boom lived through the hellish life of Nazi concentration camps—a place where hope was lost for most people. She survived to tell her story of unfaltering faith and tight-fisted hope in God.

She saw the face of evil up close and personal. She saw some of the most inhumane acts man can do to man. And when she came out of it all, she said this: "If you look at the world, you'll be distressed. If you look within, you'll be depressed. But if you look at Christ, you'll be at rest."

Where are you looking? Are you focusing on the world and its dangers? Are you gazing at yourself, hoping to find your own answers? Or are you looking to Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith? (Hebrews 12:1-2). In an uncertain world, we must keep looking to Him. —Dave Branon

Looking to Jesus, my spirit is blest,
The world is in turmoil, in Him I have rest;
The sea of my life around me may roar,
When I look to Jesus, I hear it no more. —Anon.

When your world is falling apart, trust Jesus to hold it together.

I have recently read an interesting book written by a woman who has had MS for 22 yrs.  It is fiction, written by a Christian, with many encouraging things to say about being ill.  The name of the book is 'A Sundog Moment', by Sharon Baldacci.  I saw her on a TV program and got the book from our library.  A very good read.

Time to go now and hope everyone has a pleasant evening.  God Bless.

Liz
