Janice, Jenny, Ria, JudyB, Etta Sue and Larry: Thanks for sharing in my "praise report" about Tim's safe return home after nearly a year in Iraq.  The news that he is back with his wife and two sons and resuming his "normal" life is something everyone hopes to hear about their loved ones.  Sadly, there are many who never receive news of this sort but learn they will never be seeing their special person again.    I pray for them.  And I thank all of you who are still praying for Bryan's safety.  He is in a very volitile spot at the moment (Mosul) and he says he and all his buddies "stay afraid."  

Nard~I've been meaning to tell you ... you look so much like Tim in this photo of you!  He plays keyboard and sings ... he is worship leader/music minister at his church in Sacramento.

My dinosaur PC goes into overload when anyone sends us e-mail with large attachments.   Sooo, I now go to our privider and check to see who's sending the hugh attachment(s), and delete them there.  Plus, I also check all other e-mail and those things I don't want,  delete them right there.  I simply get rid of their junk at the provider, then when I click-on We only receive selected mail.

Actually Pat's a gently soul and only bites when she's off camera.  Yep, we have three Llamas and they are gently giants.  I've trained them not to spit at me.  You see, in the Llama world to spit on another Llams is the greatest insult they can give to another Llama.  Soooooo, I simply spit in their face.  They turn away, and stand there with their lips curled in total disgust.

Lee, I was just getting ready to ask you about llamas!  

Yes, I figured out how to take off the "I'm a llama" once I knew it was okay.  I didn't know if it was supposed to be there!

I guess I'll be in good company; I'm pretty nuts myself!

Pastoral Ministry: A Shaky Foundation

Thus says the Lord: "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not
the mighty man glory in his might, nor let the rich man glory in his
riches; but let him who glories glory in this, that he understands
and knows Me...."
--Jeremiah 9:23-24

It is true that much church activity is thrown back upon a shaky
foundation of psychology and natural talents. It is sad but true that
many a mother-in-law is actually praying that her handsome son-in-law
may be called to preach because "he would have such a marvelous
pulpit presence."

We live in a day when charm is supposed to cover almost the entire
multitude of sins. Charm has taken a great place in religious
expression. I am convinced that our Lord expects us to be tough
enough and cynical enough to recognize all of this that pleases the
unthinking in our churches: the charm stuff, the stage presence in
the pulpit, the golden qualities of voice....

I feel sorry for the church that decides to call a pastor because "his
personality simply sparkles!" I have watched quite a few of those
sparklers through the years. In reality, as every kid knows at Fourth
of July time, sparklers can be an excitement in the neighborhood--but
only for about one minute! Then you are left holding a hot stick that
quickly cools off in your hand.  Tragedy in the Church: The Missing
Gifts, 32-33.

"Lord, confirm for each of us as pastors our divine call, that we
might indeed build on a strong foundation. Then bring conviction and
repentance to any in our congregations who are judging us with the
wrong criteria. Amen."

We would like to thank you all for your good wishes on our anniversary.
I had to work today so no  chance to go anywhere, but we did enjoy our day out on Saturday, and we enjoyed a meal with some of the kids last night, and also the two big boxes of Belgian chocolates they gave us!!
I had the local flower shop deliver Margit a large bouquet this morning, just like our wedding day one, white, yellow and red roses.
So I'm in good standing today! lol.

Etta Sue do you have McAfee or Norton that runs a small icon in your task bar at the bottom of your screen> I have an M in mine for McAfee. I right click on the M and a menu comes up that says. Privacy service, Firewall,Virus Scan online, updates. etc. Then I go to firewall and another little menu comes out that has disable or enable on the bottom. If it is disabled it will say enable. Hope that can help you.

Chris & Margit - I appreciate your little post about "sparkling" personalities, etc.  One of the Puritans, and I think Spurgeon as well said something like, "If you can avoid going into the pastoral ministry, do so!"  If  young man thinks he is called to it, he needs to ask himself why.  It it's the glamour or excitement, he needs to turn and run fast from that ministry.  The gifts of the Spirit are the surest signs of a call, and these must be seen by others, not the candidate himself.

I GOT RID OF ALL THE MUGS!
The little church I used to go to are going to be drinking out of blue and yellow mugs!  One of the men are buying them all from me and is picking them up in the morning.

Well, Cornelia and I went to see THE PASSION OF CHRIST this afternoon.

As has been said by others it IS very graphic and extremely violent and bloody.  It is hard to watch because of the suffering it depicts and the absolute cruelty which is almost beyond imagination.

I can't say how it might effect other people. I believe this dramatic presentation made the crucifixion more real to me. But seeing it played out in this way isn't something I needed or would have to see for my faith to be what it is.  

It may help me when I think of how much Jesus loved me and how much he was willing to suffer to redeem us and save us.  But I don't think we should conclude that a graphic presentation like this is necessary for one to understand the gospel and its power to save.

Rom 1:16-17  I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.  For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."  (NIV)

John 20:30-31  Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.  But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (NIV)

1 Cor 1:21-24  For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.  Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom,  but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,  but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.  (NIV)

I believe it is great to have a movie like this to tell the story of the crucifixion.  But we should remember that long before this movie was made these things were written so we might believe.  Long before the movie was made Paul preached the gospel which is God's power to save.  And long before the movie it pleased God through what "the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe."

Let's use this movie as well as other helps as we have opportunity but let's remember the power is in the gospel itself.

Jeremy, you asked about my grandchildren who were home schooled, if they went to college.  Yes, the two who finished high school with their mother went on to college.  My grandson John, is a freshman in college and doing well.  My granddaughter, Rebekah, is graduating this May from college.

I have come in from a big day in North Bay.  Melaura is learning French prepositions.  Boy I am glad I have a friend who understands these things.  I have no clue!  She has taken a list of prepositions and then translated them into french.  What happens next I don't know.  Ria She should do this in Dutch too shouldn't she?

Oh BTW, We can praise God for an answer to prayer for Melaura's health!
