Morning Devotional...

Jesus on Being His Disciple
Luke 14:15-35  NLT

Hearing this, a man sitting at the table with Jesus exclaimed, "What a privilege it would be to have a share in the Kingdom of God!"

Jesus replied with this illustration: "A man prepared a great feast and sent out many invitations. When all was ready, he sent his servant around to notify the guests that it was time for them to come. But they all began making excuses. One said he had just bought a field and wanted to inspect it, so he asked to be excused. Another said he had just bought five pair of oxen and wanted to try them out. Another had just been married, so he said he couldn't come.

"The servant returned and told his master what they had said. His master was angry and said, `Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the city and invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.' After the servant had done this, he reported, `There is still room for more.' So his master said, `Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full. For none of those I invited first will get even the smallest taste of what I had prepared for them.' "

Great crowds were following Jesus. He turned around and said to them, "If you want to be my follower you must love me more than your own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters--yes, more than your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. And you cannot be my disciple if you do not carry your own cross and follow me.

"But don't begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first getting estimates and then checking to see if there is enough money to pay the bills? Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of funds. And then how everyone would laugh at you! They would say, `There's the person who started that building and ran out of money before it was finished!'

"Or what king would ever dream of going to war without first sitting down with his counselors and discussing whether his army of ten thousand is strong enough to defeat the twenty thousand soldiers who are marching against him? If he is not able, then while the enemy is still far away, he will send a delegation to discuss terms of peace. So no one can become my disciple without giving up everything for me.

"Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? Flavorless salt is good neither for the soil nor for fertilizer. It is thrown away. Anyone who is willing to hear should listen and understand!"

What is it going to cost you to be a follower of Jesus?  Are you willing to pay the price?

When a builder doesn't count the cost or estimates it inaccurately, his building may be left half completed.

Will your Christian life be only half built and then abandoned because you did not count the cost of commitment to Jesus?  What are those costs?

Christians may face loss of social status or wealth.  They may have to give up control over their money, their time, or their career.  They may be hated, separated from their family, and even put to death.

Following Christ does not mean a trouble-free life.  We must carefully count the cost of becoming Christ's disciples so that we will know what we are getting into and won't be tempted later to turn back.

Marilyn ~ Have a safe fun trip!

Jane ~ Hi there!

Larry ~ I saw Reba as Nurse Forbush on PBS also and yes, last night was better for me.

Janet ~ October 2, 2007 we get to see 'Oklahoma!' at Beef n Boards.

Red Hats was fun today.  We ate at a new to me restaurant.  I can't believe the hamburgers were $8 and they had a one pound burger for $10.49.  Who can eat a one pound burger?  I had French Fried Shrimp  (10 of them), fries and cole slaw.  Delicious!!

Suppose to get to freezing tomorrow night.  Maybe I should put styrofoam in my vents for winter tomorrow!

Jane Walker

Well here I are again!   :D  I received a rather disturbing call from my youngest daughter this evening (Wednesday) or maybe I should say a call from a rather disturbed daughter.  She is going through a lot of STUFF and thinks she is a complete failure and really stupid ... of course Mom doesn't like to hear such things from her baby (even if she is 45 years old) so it upset me as well.  She was crying hysterically for a while and I only ask that y'all bear with me while I try to be a long distance comfort.

Also, I received an email from my other daughter saying she will not be able to get to California at this time.  Stuff just keeps happening y'know .... Anyway, I'm still leaving in the morning and will be driving most of the day so ... yup, I'll be a mite tard.

Marilyn I'm praying. God is STILL in control.

Great devotional today, thank you for reminding us we need to count the costs always.

Jane hope all goes well for you and you have a safe trip, I'll be praying for you.

Everyone else hope all is well.

The computer problem is fixed for the moment, apparently the ethernet port is shot. I put in an ethernet card and all is well for now. Looks like it's time to save some money and upgrade to a better motherboard.

Have a wonderful, blessed day!!

Thanks, Jeannine ... I really appreciate the prayers of my brothers and sisters when it seems I'm all alone ... never the case in God's family!

I'm glad you got the computer problem under control at least for the moment.  Funny how we have come to depend on these machines, isn't it?

Y'all take care ... I'm heading for bed.   ZZZzzzzzzzzz

Jane, I hope your trip goes well and you get lots of visiting done.

Pat, your devotional yesterday, and yours today, Etta Sue, are really thought provoking.  True believers, filled with God's Spirit, our lives found in Christ, will always be in the minority.  Religious crowds are everywhere.  Where there is no cost, you'll find the crowds.    I appreciate what you both posted.  We are called out.  I think we should be less and less at home in a "religious setting".

I was so touched by what I saw in the Amish community.  I wasn't surprised, but was, instead, convicted of how my reaction would be if this same thing had happened in my community.  I knew that's how they lived their lives, but now I've seen that in good times and bad times, they are trusting Jesus and living His teachings, both quietly, and when pushed into the limelight.  They have few distractions, while we have many. :/   I, for one, am a fan of simplicity.  We are much too scattered. :)  Make that I am much too scattered.

My little Rocko is still sick.  He can't keep even water down.  The vet thinks he has a bug, or something, and thinks tomorrow will be the turn around.  I sure hope so.  He looks miserable, and sleeps most of the time.

I have to go check on him.  We're, he and I, sleeping in the living room tonight so I can keep an eye on him.

blessings,  Nita

Jane Walker

Thanks, Nita ... I'm so sorry little Rocko is feeling so badly.  It has to be a worry for you as well as a not so wonderful experience for him.

I'll see y'all when I can get a chance .... Take care

Etta Sue

Thank you, Jeannine, for the comment on the devotion.  It makes posting them worthwhile when people appreciate them.

Jane ~ Do have a safe beatiful trip to Sacramento.  I know whichever of your children are there, you will be happy.  Have fun with those old folks you went to school with, too!

Nita ~ It is devastating when our pets are unwell.  They can't tell us what is wrong.  We can only comfort them and give them meds that the doctors prescribe...if our pets will take them.  Give Rocko an extra scratch behind the ears for me!

When I read my morning devotions, Ali will jump up on the couch beside me and take her bath.  She is so sweet and I thank God every day for saving her for me.  I was really scared a few weeks back that I was going to lose her.

Larry Hanna

Hi everyone from a nice crisp Georgia.  It is a beautiful fall day here.

Jane, I hope you have a wonderful trip.  Sorry to read that your daughter is so upset but perhaps she was needed a shoulder to cry on.  Take care of yourself.

Nita, sorry that you have a sick cat.  You are certainly dedicated to sleep in the same room with him.  Your comment about churches reminds me of some comments a lady made at Bible study yesterday.  When she moved here she visited some mega churches and said in one she couldn't leave quick enough when the minister came up on a pedistal in the floor and had dry ice swirling around him.

Jeannine, glad you were able to fix your computer by simply replacing the ethernet card.

Etta Sue, just keep that cold weather up your way please.  Thanks for the fine devotional today.

Marilyn, I hope you are feeling better today and that your trip will not be impacted.

Liz, you asked for comments on what Queen Elizabeth had done.  One thought pops into my mind and that is "political correctness".

Carol, thanks for the explanation of the handles on your sewing table.  I hadn't even thought about drawers and handles.  That must be some cabinet.  Your friend, who you took to lunch yesterday, surely wasn't serious in wanting you to take her to lunch everyday.  Guess it never hurts to ask!  :)

Janet, it sounds like you and Darrel had a very enjoyable day yesterday and Darrel probably got more joy from buying you the TV than from buying something for himself.  The other evening we took our son and DIL out to eat and they ordered dessert.  It was so big and sweet that we all ate it and still couldn't finish it.  It is a shame that they don't serve smaller portions and at a more reasonable price.  Are you practicing your Christmas Cantata?  Our choir director said last night that our Christmas Cantata should be received by this weekend.  I will be glad to get started working on it as there aren't too many weeks left.

Hope everyone has a good day.  My only commitment is to go to Calvin Cove this afternoon.

Marilyn

Good Morning to all. Jane I will be praying for your daughter and for your trip to Sacto and back. I am feeling a little better today at least I am breathing through both nostrils. that's a improvement.

Today I have to clean Jan's house as she is having some company soon, I think this weekend.  Then wen I get home I have to do a little laundry, finish packing, shower and wash my hair. I want everything to be clean when I leave so  I won't have to do it all when I get back. I don't know how anyone can leave their house in a mess when the go away for a few days, but that is what  I have seen once or twice at my son's house. I am so adamant abut it that I even want every single dish clean.

When my son was a teenager and I would go for the weekend someplace, he always had a party but they sure did a super job of cleaning my house before I got home. Things have sure changed.

The morning has slipped away, and now I don't have time for a proper post.  Lots to do, will be back later this afternoon, after I catch up a bit!  Lots of really nice posts here today, thanks, all!  :)

Just quickly popping in to say hi.

Thanks to the wonderful moderators for the devotions.  Like many, I read and appreciate but fail to comment.

Marilyn Jane and Liz, please have safe and happy journeys and take photos if you have the opportunity!

Janet, there is truth to that saying "It is better to give than to receive"!

I have actually started that process this morning, I placed an order for some Christmas gifts.  Maybe this year I can be done without last minute scrambling...

Must get back to work, have a great day everyone!

Pat

Hi Everyone...

WE HAD SNOW TODAY!

I was driving in it and at times it was white out conditions.  I can't believe that it's so early in the year.  The ground is still warm so it isn't staying.

I've been doing errands most of today.  This was also the day I had to give my friend's mother her chemo needle and also take her to the doctor and then we had to go shopping.

Actually I haven't been home all that long--had a late supper.

Thinking of you, Jane!

Janet

I'm back to post before I head to bed.  Last night was one of "those" nights, so I'm looking forward to sleeping soundly tonight.

Liz, I was horrified to hear that the Queen had allowed the muslims a prayer room in the palace!!  Great Britain is or has been known as a Christian nation!!  Can you concieve of the king of Saudi Arabia providing a Christian prayer room in his palace??  Not in a thousand years!!

Larry, I'm glad you lightened your load by letting someone else handle your church's web page, even though you are so good at computer work and enjoy it.  You need to take care of yourself.

SNOW???? :yikes:   I'm NOT ready for the white stuff yet!!  It is so nice of you to help your friend out, Pat, even though not a pleasant task.  Hope you are feeling good today.

Carol, that would wear you out, to go take your friend to lunch EVERY day!!  Goodness!!  Maybe a special treat, once a month or so?  I know neither Mom nor Beth likes the food at the care home, but I can't go take them to lunch every day!!  I do go take Beth out occasionally, and my sister takes Mom to lunch every Sunday after she takes her to church.  I think if you eat in any restaurant or any institution every day, you get tired of the food.  It's just not like home cooking.

Jane and Marilyn, enjoy your trips!

Nita, hope your little pooch feels better soon.

It has been a rather frustrating day for me, but we have accomplished several things in spite of that.

And now, I bid you all a good night!
