Morning Devotional...

Talking Too Much

The wise listen to others (Proverbs 12:15, NLT).

Dear friends:

Sometimes God can remind us of our own faults through the faults of other people.

There is a person whom my dear wife,Vonette, and I have known for many years, and although we love her and respect her, we know that whenever we're together she monopolizes the conversation.

With this woman, everything is "me, me, me," and "my, my, my."  She is obviously a very lonely and insecure person.  For obvious reasons people are not drawn to be with her because her insecurity has motivated her to talk, talk, talk, and in the process people are uncomfortable.  She has not learned to listen.  This is not good.

But sometimes I catch myself being the same way.  As a matter of fact, I get so excited about the Lord and what He's doing through the ministry of Campus Crusade and other ministries in which I'm very much interested that I am prone to talk too much.  Sometimes Vonette will say to me, "You talked too much at a dinner," or "You talked too much at that meeting." (Oh, how God uses wives to speak to us!)  I often find it necessary to say to her, "We both need to watch what we say because we're so full of our subjects, of Christ and what He's doing that we want everybody to hear, but that's not the best way to communicate."  So, I personally am not without sin and not without fault.

Let us not be like the man referred to in Proverbs 18:2: "A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions" (NIV).

Let us always be good listeners, because sincere listening is an act of love, sacrificing our own desire to talk for the benefit of others.  And whenever we do talk, let us make sure our words glorify the Lord and are edifying to others, and not like the people referred to in Jude 16: "These men are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage" (NIV).

Yours for helping to fulfill the Great Commission
each year until our Lord returns,

Bill Bright

Thank you Janet, What a wonderful message from Bill Bright. We all need to learn to be good listeners don't we?

Last night Gilbert decided he doesn't like the way I have the house arranged, for one thing My computer is between the couch and the TV because I need a longer piece of cable to connect from the splitter to my computer in order to put it behind the couch. So I told him to  bring me a length of cable and he could help me with the rearranging.

Fay's niece passed away on Saturday. She was 69 and had cancer.

Wonderful devotional Janet.  I am reminded of a quote.  "God gave us 2 ears and one mouth, so we should listen twice as much as we speak."  That came from a police officer as he drove me to a hospital after my husband was in an accident back in 1998.   The quote stayed with me, though, I often need to be reminded to shush up.

I had a good evening with mother.  She had company and we did a lot of laughing.  Then I had the opportunity to spend some one on one time with Melaura.  It is rare that we have that opportunity as the other girls are usually with us.  A coffee/tea and donut later and we were heading home.

My heart goes out to Beth, Janet, it is hard losing a pet.

Well I am tired, last night was so short.  I kept getting up due to nose bleeds.

I am off to bed

Night all

Thanks, Janet, for the reminder from Mr. Bright.  I too need to learn to listen better.  Oh God, grant us listening hearts.

Papa John

Al, I'm sure you understand the feeling as you sit and listen to the younger guys who have taken our places.  But then we had our time didn't we.  I have often thought of the fact that if we had computers when we were young how much easier it would have been to research and prepare sermons and to keep records etc.

Janet, thanks for the devotional.  We do need to learn to listen and let others share their ideas with us.  We need to strike a happy medium and know when to speak and when to listen.

James 1:18-22
18   He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.
19   My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
20   for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.
21   Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
22   Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says (NIV)

Papa John          < <3)))><<

Eph 2:8-9  For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast.(NIV)

Thanks Janet for the reminder today.  It sure touched home with me.

Reminds me of the little Sunday School chorus...

O be careful little tongue, what you say;
O be careful little tongue what you say.
For the Father up above, is looking down in love;
Oh, be careful little tongue what you say.

I'll be back later, folks.

Janet:  A good plain speaking devotion today.  Thank you.

Pat: Wishing you a much better day --- go away flu bug!

Larry:   :D My new microwave doesn't talk to us.  It has a nicer sound when cooking is over though - it is a Samsung.  Made in Malaysia by a South Korean corporation.  What else is new?

I may not be around for a few days as company is arriving.  Made and refrigerated cole slaw, macaroni and cheese casserole, and meatloaf.  Now to make a sweet potato dish and some dessert and other things on my mind too - have frozen pumpkin bread for coffee time this afternoon.

This is a cousin & husband who has only son & missionary (now with five children).  She had everyone plus two handicapped they flew over for three months this summer.  Now, she is ready to go to Arizona and relax but that will never happen.

Bye for a few days.

I'm glad the devotional from Bill Bright spoke to many of us.  In our Sunday School class, we have several who are prone to talk too much (including yours truly  :-[) and we never get through our lesson in one Sunday!

I am feeling pretty punk today, still coughing and hacking, feel really tired.  I didn't get much sleep at all last night, so think I might try to rest some today.  I did go work out this morning, though.

Papa John, thanks for the additional scripture which adds to the devotional.  I always enjoy reading what you have to say.  :)

Pat, I hope you are feeling better today.

I will come back later, I feel a nap coming on.  ^-^

James 1:19 tells us to be quick to listen and slow to speak.  Janet, your devotion was a continuance from our Bible Study last night.  We were asked if we talked to much?  Guilty...when I am passionate about a subject.  If we listene?  Guilty....when I am passionate about a subject.  I have two people in my life that when I talk to them, I know they aren't listening because they ask you a question that if they were listening they would have already known the answer!!

Karma ~ Travis sounds like he is going to be a great singer.  Why not?  Both his parents are musical!  Would love to hear him.

Janet ~ My heart feels for Beth and you.

Pat ~ Get over that bug soon.  I am hunting for a cheap flu shot.  Next year my insurance will pay for immunizations but not this year and I don't want to wait until the New Year for my shot.  I have to take care of myself so I don't want the flu.

Judy B, classmate, and I are going to have Mexican at a new restaurant near me.  It is an El Rodeo restaurant...there is on in Greenfield, and two near Noblesville.  This one is at Fishers.  But really the closest to me.  I haven't seen Judy for a couple of weeks....will be fun.

I do wish we would have a hard freeze.  Fall is the only time I think I have an allergy.  My eyes water and therefore, my vision is distorted.  But after the hard freeze, that goes away.  I am getting tired of seeing things like I am in a House of Mirrors!

A lot of us seem to be under the weather.  Thise of you who are hacking and coughing try sleeping in a recliner rather than flat in a bed, also, put ice in a washcloth and hold it on your throar.  It will help cool the scratchiness that really gets the coughing goinig.  Also another tried and true remidy, Chicken Soup.  It seems to cure all ailments, and at the very least makes you feel better.

Here in Ontario we have an abundance of broccoli.  Sometimes we look for a different way to cookmit other than seteaming it.  I have posted in the Soup and Salad section a recipe for Broccoli Soup.  I am making it for supper tonight, along with wholewheat tea biscuits it will be a nutritious meal.

It is cold and damp.  There is a suggestion of snow in the air.  Looks like winter is soon to be here.  Burrrrrrrrr I wish I could be a snow bird and move to Florida from November to May.

Past and Janet take care of yourselves get lots of rest, drink pleanty of hot tea, and take tylenol.  These bugs have to run their courses, all we can do is treat the symptoms.

Good night everyone
Judy

Hi everyone.  Today is our son's 42nd birthday and he and his wife will be over around 6 pm to share dinner with us and celebrate his birthday.  Pat has prepared a very delicious meal but has about done herself in.  She went to the church right after twelve as the craft group was going to do a fall craft with the Calvin Cove folks.  I hope it went well.  When I got up from a long afternoon nap I see she has returned (don't know what time) and is sleeping.  Hopefully she will feel rested and be able to enjoy the evening without too much pain.

I had a lovely time last night at the rehearsal of the Atlanta Symphony Chorus in its final preparation for its trip to New York on Wednesday.  The principal condiuction, Donald Runnicles, had flown in from whereever he lives to hold the final rehearsal.  The chorus had been well prepared and the music was beautiful even if I couldn't understand what they were saying as they were singing in Latin.  I certainly hope they don't run into a lot of bad weather in New York.

It was down to 43 degrees here this morning and still windy.  I looks like the wind has died down now and the sun is out for the first time today.

Sorry to read that some of our folks are suffering colds and other ailments.  I certainly hope it will be short-lived.

Janet, I enjoyed the devotional today.

Good to see everyone posting.

I did manage to get a short nap in, and don't seem to be coughing quite so much now.  I got up and got my family reunion newsletter typed up and the email ones sent out; now have to make paper copies, fold, put in envelopes, address and stamp and get them ready for tomorrow's mail.  I hadn't done one since my computer crash, and lost so many email addresses.  :(

I would like to request prayers for my great niece Audra.  She has two young children, 4 and 1 year old.  Her father died of a genetic heart condition when her mother had just learned she was pregnant; and now they find that Audra has inherited this condition.  They say she is in very serious condition and may need open heart surgery, so they are on their way to the Mayo Clinic.  They are taking the children for testing, too, to see whether or not they have inherited the same condition.  There is no warning; if it flares up they are dead before they even hit the floor!  So please pray for Audra and her family.  Her husband and father in law are taking them to Mayo's; testing to begin tomorrow.  Thanks so much.

I WAS TALKING to a new acquaintance at a dinner party, and the conversation got around to unemployment.
"You know, it's really sad," she said. "So many people are out of work, and here I am living off the fat of the land."
"How do you manage that?" I asked.
Her voice lowered to a whisper as she replied, "I'm an aerobics instructor."

Yes, I certainly would have been able to put computers to good use!  And, dear brother, we can minister to so many people via internet these days!  I'm thankful for that.
