Morning Devotional...

A Son Who Was Found
Luke 15:11-32  NLT

To illustrate the point further, Jesus told them this story: "A man had two sons.  The younger son told his father, 'I want my share of your estate now before you die.' So his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons.

"A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and moved to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money in wild living.  About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve.  He persuaded a local farmer to hire him, and the man sent him into his fields to feed the pigs.  The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything.

"When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, 'At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger!  I will go home to my father and say, "Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you,  and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant."'

"So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.  His son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.'

"But his father said to the servants, 'Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet.  And kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.' So the party began.

"Meanwhile, the older son was in the fields working. When he returned home, he heard music and dancing in the house, and he asked one of the servants what was going on.  'Your brother is back,' he was told, 'and your father has killed the fattened calf. We are celebrating because of his safe return.'

"The older brother was angry and wouldn't go in. His father came out and begged him, but he replied, 'All these years I've slaved for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to. And in all that time you never gave me even one young goat for a feast with my friends. Yet when this son of yours comes back after squandering your money on prostitutes, you celebrate by killing the fattened calf!'

"His father said to him, 'Look, dear son, you have always stayed by me, and everything I have is yours.  We had to celebrate this happy day. For your brother was dead and has come back to life! He was lost, but now he is found!'"

In what ways is this story like your life?

Some people need to hit bottom in order to come to their senses.

The younger son's attitude was based on a desire to be free to live as he pleased.  That is not so different from the desires of most people in our world today.

It may take great sorrow and tragedy to cause them to look up to the only one who can help them.  Are you trying to live life your way, selfishly pushing aside anything that gets in your way?  Don't take leave of your senses.  Stop and look before you hit bottom, and save yourself and your family much grief.

I have been working on my 2007 calendars that I make for family members that have the birthdays, anniversaries, deaths, holidays, daylight savings and full moons on them.  I am so glad that I typed up a 'How to' last year and put with my calendar or I don't think I would have remembered how to click one button and change the format from 2006 to 2007.

I don't think it is to get as cold tonight.  The parts for my furnace won't be here until Friday and Kitty and I will be gone all day Saturday so I am getting my furnace worked on on Sunday afternoon....not a Christian thing to do but I have to have my furnace!

Etta Sue:  Thanks for the version of the prodigal son.  We can always listen to that story of real life many times.  You mentioned having the furnace worked on Sunday and a bit of guilt over that fact.  You know that we still carry guilt over any work on Sunday from our parents.  We had to finish our painting in the kitchen this last Sunday because of my pending eye surgery and several other appointments - yes, a tinge of guilt even though we had gone to service Saturday night.  One of the meetings was even at the church.  Because of my background, I have rarely shopped on Sundays and now it is the biggest shopping day of the week for retail - hard to imagine the way things were years ago.  Still, people have to work at hospitals, airplanes still fly and things go on so there it is.  We just try to live a good and godly life for the Lord - not for fleeting appearances of others.

Zeebers"  Happy Birthday to you!!!

My eye is good enough that I can drive today.

Carol

Janet

Thanks, Etta Sue.  I always enjoy that story from the Bible, and as Carol hinted, it is never out of date.  But don't you wonder if the elder brother's attitude changed?

Carol, so glad your eye is better now.

Today is the farewell service for my friends's husband, and it is cold and wet here.  Maxine just called and asked if Darrel and I would come and eat with the family.  What an honor.

Thanksgiving is looming, and still no plans........... :-\

I must get dressed.  I got up and showered and washed my hair, but put on clean pajamas and watched the 700 club.

Hello to all who pop in today.

JEEBERS!  I have had you on my mind lately.  Happy Birthday!

Janet, I'm so pleased to hear that the issue with Darrel is only a pinched nerve.  Not that a pinched neve is fun but much better than having a recurrance of heart problems.

This must be the time for dental work.  I had my cleaning last week and had to return this past Monday for a filling.  I have just got off the phone with the Dentist's office.  My tooth is so very sensitive to cold things...even a glass of water causes pain.  They said this quite often lasts 4-6 weeks...ouch!

Marilyn, I wonder if the fee waiving for curves would apply here in Canada?  I will have check and see.

I am parking in the garage for the time being, and I have to admit, it is nice to come out in the morning and note that there is frost on the windows of the vehicles parked outside and not have to scrape mine.  I am sure that this will change in the near future as I once again go back to parking outside.

Happy Birthday Zeebers.

Now, I must get back to work.

Ruthie

Hi Everyone:

Haven't been here for a while.   I've been working on my health again.  Tomorrow going back to my old doctor.    Hope there is no problem with being away for a few months.     The new doctor I chose is not as caring, so we will see.

Hope everyone is doing well.

God bless

Love Ruthie

Janet

We just returned from Oscar's memorial service.  It was a very nice service, and several people stood to tell something about the Oscar they knew.  My friend is doing very well, but I know things have been so hectic around her that she hasn't had time for a "meltdown."  I told her she can call me anytime she needs me, and I hope she will.  I haven't been through losing a spouse, but think it must be one of the hardest trials of life.

Marilyn, I have never seen a tent garage.  I don't think that wold work well here, as the wind would probably blow it into the next county--even if it were tied down!  Hope you get yours soon, as I never enjoyed scraping frost off windshields, either.  Garages can really spoil a person!  ;)

Sue, hope you get to park in the garage until Spring!  :)

Hi, Ruthie!  Long time, no see.  Hope you get your health issues sorted out soon.

I was so thankful for the weather here today.  They predicted cold, rain, and really high winds; but we had clouds, then hard rain, then it cleared off to blue skies and puffy clouds, then the sun came out while we were at the cemetery, which was such a blessing!  And the wind didn't blow!!  Hallelujah!  8)  As we drove home, the clouds were closing in again.

See y'all later!

Larry Hanna

Hi everyone.  Just read over the messages and realize I didn't post yesterday.  I had a busy day and wasn't home very much.  Today I just had Calvin Cove and have something to attend this evening.

Janet, sure glad to read that Darrel is ok as it pertains to his heart.  I am glad they isolated the problem.  There are a lot of things that have the same symptoms as heart problems.  Always better to be safe and have things checked out.  I know you must be a wonderful friend to have and I can understand why you would be asked to join with the family of your friend.

Marilyn, I hope you get your tent garage tomorrow.  I have had a garage for many years and sure appreciate getting into a relatively warm car in winter and not having to scrap the windows.  I never understood why so few houses in Anchorage, Alaska had garages although was told it had to do with the cost of wood.

Interesting discussion on the Sabbath.  The Seventh Day Adventists do not agree with observing the Sabbath on Sunday and that is why they meet on Saturday.  I did some Bible studies they have available a few years ago and according to the supporting data with the Bible verses, it was a Pope who made a decree that we should observe the Sabbath on Sunday.  I haven't gone back to lookup the information.  Al, your explanation makes a lot of sense.

Carol, glad your eye surgery was successful and you were able to drive today.

We are suppose to have rain tomorrow and it isn't going to get out of the 50s.  My good friend and his wife are having a garage sale tomorrow and it sure doesn't look very favorable for a good sale.  However, they are also doing it on Saturday and that should be a better day here.

Sorry I haven't addressed everyone today but it is about time for supper and then I will be leaving.  I read all the postings and appreciate the devotional messages shared and was glad to see a couple of folks we haven't seen for awhile posting.

Marilyn

Two of my neighbors are out there putting up my garage. Janet i do not think it would stand up to the type of winds in the  midwest or even the desert winds. This will be staked into the ground with 12 inch pieces of rebar. The frame is all metal  others I have seen were made out of PVC piping.

I hae been online paying afew bills, checking my bank staement etc this afternoon.

Hi Everyone...

It's good to see you all and lovely to read your conversations.

I've been busy doing my Avon today.

Nice to see you in here Ruthie.

Good to hear that it isn't Darrel's heart, Janet.  That's great news.

Talk to you later,

Pat

Hi, friends,

Borrowing a computer again - mine's on the fritz.

It's been chilly with rain all day and predicted rain tomorrow. Makes a person wanna pull the covers up over the head and drift back off to dreamland, doesn't it.

Y'all have a good evening.

Ruth Ann

Marilyn, your tent garage wouldn't do well here on the coast either. :)   You should send a picture of it so we can all see.

Larry, it was the Seventh Day Adventist literature that made me first start looking at the 7th day Sabbath.  I do know, from church history literature, that when Constantine made the official change, his documented remarks included now worshipping on the "venerable day of the sun". ie SUNday. That bothered me.  I'd still like to do an in depth study with an open mind.
I did order some books from some Messianic Jews, who worship on Sabbath still.  Even they said that we, as "gentiles", were not bound to the 7th day Sabbath as they were.   So many views of this, huh? :)

I took a nap today, so am up later.  I guess I'll go check out the Gallery and look at the new pictures.

Blessings, Nita
