TRUST AND OBEY
(Click to hear music)

When we walk with the Lord
in the light of his word,
what a glory he sheds on our way!
While we do his good will,
he abides with us still,
and with all who will trust and obey.

Refrain:
Trust and obey,
for there's no other way
to be happy in Jesus,
but to trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear,
not a sorrow we share,
but our toil he doth richly repay;
not a grief or a loss,
not a frown or a cross,
but is blest if we trust and obey.

(Refrain)

But we never can prove
the delights of his love
until all on the altar we lay;
for the favor he shows,
for the joy he bestows,
are for them who will trust and obey.

(Refrain)

Then in fellowship sweet
we will sit at his feet,
or we'll walk by his side in the way;
what he says we will do,
where he sends we will go;
never fear, only trust and obey.

(Refrain)

Today's Devotional

Trust and Toil

from Hope for Each Day by Rev. Billy Graham

As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.  James 2:26

The Scriptures teach that a Christian is one who trusts Christ as Savior and obeys Him as Lord.  That is the essence of Christian Discipleship -- believing and following.  The book of Acts says, "The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch" (11:26).

The New Testament makes no separation between belief and obedience.  They are linked together as one, because if you truly believe, you will truly follow.  Trust makes us part of the Kingdom, but our love for God and obedience to His will are the badges of our citizen ship in that Kingdom.

That is why the Christian life is a happy blend of trust and toil, resting and striving, receiving and doing.  God does His part, and we must do ours.  A farmer's crop is a gift from God--but it also requires hard work.  God may give a person the gift of music--but it takes practice and discipline to make it come alive.

Is any area of your life "off limits" to Christ?  Believe--and obey.

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass .... it's about learning to dance in the rain!

Hi everyone on this Sunday morning.  It is another clear morning and we are headed to 93 degrees this afternoon so summer is back with us.  This will be our regular Sunday schedule of going to church and then out to eat.  I did enjoy the football games I watched yesterday.  I am feeling better today and decided I would skip the walking this morning as my whole day yesterday was a downer after my walk when the angina pain hit me.  Hope all have a nice day.

Jane, thanks for sharing the fine words of wisdom from Billy Graham.  Life does require hard work bu when we trust and obey the results are sure good.

Janet, I don't often ride in a Lincoln but know they have a fine, comfortable ride.  It should provide you sound transportation for many years.  Glad you could spend some time with Chelsea.  I do remember the ordeal the little had due to the lead paint.  It sounds like they will have a beautiful home when all the work is finished.

Janet

Darrel drove the new car home and I the old one, which was fine with me!  He also drove to Hugoton for church this morning, and then I did drive it home.  Lots of new things to learn, such as push-button start, push-button gear shifting, automatic parallel parking (nice!) and so many other things on the touch screen.  I think it might take a year to learn it all, not sure about it even then!  :)  It sure is going to be impossible to keep it looking clean, though.  That red is beautiful but shows every speck!  I love that the interior is white leather, but the instruments are dark and show dust immediately.  More cleaning.  :-\  But it is very comfortable riding, easy to handle, lots of pep, and has lots of new safety things on it.  Abby remarked that that's what we need.  ;)

I need to make a salad for a funeral dinner tomorrow.  One of the long-time members of our church passed away.  He hasn't been able to attend for a long while, but his wife is faithful at every service.  The funeral is at 10 tomorrow, the dinner later, out at the Civic Center, because it's a really big family.

Diane has taken Abby all over the place looking at colleges, and where do you guess she has chosen to attend?  Kansas State University, where both Curtis and Mark went!  I find it rather amusing, because if any of us had suggested K-State, she would have emphatically said, "NO!"     They visited there this past weekend.

Jane, thanks for the thoughts.  I listened to an old Billy Graham crusade sermon this week and he talked more about his family life than I'd ever heard him say before.  Very enjoyable.  What a man of God he is!

I need to go see Beth and John, haven't seen them for a couple of days now.  Have a nice evening, everybody!

Hi, friends,

It's been a quiet day here in Nashville. I'm seeing daily improvement, so believe the shot will work for my health benefit in the end.

Y'all have a good day.

Hi everyone on an overcast but nice morning.  We did attend Sunday School and Church yesterday and grabbed a quick tuna sub at Subway.  I was not feeling very good yesterday and spent the afternoon resting and still retired for the night at 7:30.  I had a good nights sleep but not sure the tiredness has yet run its course.  I will take Pat to the church at 10 am for her Women's Circle meeting and go on down for coffee.  This evening is the first of the Methodist Men's Dinner and I plan on attending that.  Scott plans on coming out to have dinner with his Mother as we haven't seen him for several days.

Janet, glad you like your new car.  It sounds very nice and the safety features on these new cars are something.  Glad Abby has decided on a college.  One of my former bosses, when I worked in Kansas City, was an alum of Kansas State and a big supporter of the school.  How far is Manhattan, Kansas from where Abby lives?

Ruth Ann, good news with daily improvement.

Larry Hanna

I had to come back to post this link which should brighten everyone's day:

Janet

For sure that made me smile, Larry!  Very enjoyable!

It is about 300 miles from Hugoton to Manhattan where Kansas State is located, so still a long drive--about six hours.  But at least it's in-state tuition!  K-State has the most loyal followers of any college I know!

I attended the funeral this morning, then took food for the dinner, went to visit Beth, ate at the Sr. Center and had a nice visit with my friend Maxine's daughter, Pam.  She lives in Missouri so I don't see her often.

I have some frames to repair for Beth and John.  She called a while ago, wanting to know if I've heard anything about her new wheelchair. (No, not yet.)  I so hope we get some answers soon.  We want to start planning their wedding, getting stuff for it, etc.

Talk at'cha later!

Hi, friends,

Well, it was another day to take the disabled lady to the doctor.

Then, my brother and his wife, who live in Ohio, are in town, and wanted us to meet for lunch. It was such a treat to see them again.

Finally, some research on availability of living space nearer my daughter's home (still in Nashville, but some miles from where I currently live).

Now, it's about time to finish my dinner, so will let y'all have peace from reading about my "doings." :)

Love to all,
Ruth Ann

Hi everyone.  We have  been enjoying a nice steady rain for the last 2 1/2 hours with the prediction of more rain for at least the next two hours.  I just checked the gauge and we have had 1/2 inch so far with more expected.  I have turned off the watering system as won't need to water on Thursday.  I had a nice time at the Methodist's Men's meeting last evening.  It started with a steak dinner and then we had a very good speaker.  Scott came out and he and his mother went to dinner together at the Chinese Buffet close by.  It gave them some good mother/son time.  He may be coming back out this morning to put together the metal shelving I purchased several weeks ago for my office closet.  Today is our first Senior Luncheon at the church for the fall season.  There is always a good meal and a program.  Today's program will be provided by our choir director playing the piano.  She is a marvelous musician and her playing is as good or better than some professionals I have heard.  I am really looking forward to it as piano music is my favorite.

Janet, Kansas State is far enough away that Abby probably won't be coming home on many weekends.  Sure hope that wheelchair is built soon for Beth.  Will she and John be having a church wedding?

Ruth Ann, nice you could spend time with your brother and his wife.  Hope you find what you want in terms of living space closer to your daughter if that is what you want to do.  As I have said numerous time, I am so thankful we now live close by to where are son is located.

Janet

Ruth Ann, glad you got to see your brother and wife, and do hope if you want to be nearer to your daughter, that you find a place you really like, can afford and will enjoy!   :)

Larry, your church seems to have so many nice things for the older folks.  Ours only concentrates on the kids and youth.  I try not to complain, because I do know the youth are the future of the church, but wonder why we can't sometimes have something for the older folks, too.

No, Abby won't likely come home often, only when there are long weekends or other breaks.  That should satisfy her longing for independence, that most kids her age have.  I am so happy she and her mother have become very close over the past year or two, so know she will come home when she can.  I am praying she doesn't get any of those professors who do their best to cause kids to forsake their faith.  And that any boy she is attracted to is one of godly character who will treat her with respect.

I have a chiropractic appointment soon, then need to be at the Legacy when Beth's doctor comes between 12:30 and 1, so I can talk to him about the muscle relaxer.  It's causing Beth to sleep all day--every day.  She needs to be awake so she can enjoy having John around.

Yes, Larry, they will  have a church wedding--I don't think either of them would consider any other kind!  Well, maybe an outdoor one, if we had a beautiful place to have it and the weather could be depended on to be nice!  ;)  They have already spoken to the pastor at Country View Baptist about having it there, and he was very gracious about it.  There are no steps out there!  I am about ready to give up on hearing from Wish Upon a Wedding and go ahead with preparations.  You can't do all that stuff in a day!

I did go work out today, hope it helps my stiffness and soreness.  I don't understand why I am having it, anyway.  :-\

Have a lovely day!

Carol

We arrived in Tucson on Sunday afternoon and unloaded the car then made a short drive for groceries to set up the fridge.   There are flowering shrubs now with hungry quail waiting for us - also, two huge rains that made some frightening (not for us) floods.  Our drive was just great until the terrible interstate 10 which is loaded with trucks.  My cell phone was not working or the highway patrol would have had a call about a truck driver addicted to his electronics - swerving onto the grass even on the interstate.  Unbelievable.

Janet:  Your new car sounds like a comfy ride.  We have a Toyota Venza and I call  it the Edsel because they are not going to make it anymore - so there goes any value for a trade-in.  Glad you are getting things fixed and still working on this wedding.

Ruth Ann:  Living close to your family will give them a little piece of mind too.  May you find something perfect!

Jane:  Thanks ever so much for Trust and Obey --- for there is no other way.

I got behind 4 days on my daily bible verses so there was a lot to catch up.  We are still a bit groggy in the afternoons just from all of the issues with setting up in Arizona - it was getting cool at home and then it is hot and humid here from all of their monsoon rain this year.  We saw snow on the peaks a few days before leaving Co.    - We did watch that awful "debate".  Too many did not get a chance and the questions were directed to only one person - we did not want Scott Walker to drop out because he is one of only two with real background but so it goes in this country now.  Certainly Not Neutral CNN got their way!

After that - I had better find some calming words to read.   Have a great day & evening everyone.

Ruth Ann Bice

Hi, friends,

Well, it's good to y'all talking tonight. I've only spoken to one person who called. Other than that, have been quiet in my apartment.

I look forward to touring the apartment house sometime next week. The two children who are to be here will be great advisers in my decision.

It's hard to believe that autumn begins tonight. I've already noticed the days are shorter.

Y'all have a good rest of this short day. :)

Love to all,
Ruth Ann

Hi everyone.  I awoke at 3:30 and haven't been able to go back to sleep.  Finally about 5 am I decided I might as well get up and come out into the family room and do something productive.  Today will be fairly busy as Pat goes to her craft group at 10 am and I will go with her and go on to coffee.  Then this evening is the Wednesday night dinner and Bible study at church.  That will be plenty for today.

Yesterday at our monthly senior luncheon we had Shepard's Pie which is something I had never eaten before.  It was made with pork and was really quite good.  It was served with a salad, biscuit and a little slice of cheese cake for dessert.  We were also given our choice between an apple or banana.  We brought our apples home.  The program was outstanding as our very talented choir director shared her talent on the piano with us playing some hymns and then accompanying us in singing some secular songs and then some hymns.  She finished off the entertainment with a classical piece by Mendelssohn that he had written when he was 15 years old.  It was a very difficult piece and it was the only piece she used printed music.  The whole composition was on her iPad and she had this blue tooth foot pedal that allowed her to turn the pages without taking her hands from the piano keys.  Our church is very fortunate to have such a talented musician leading our music program.  She is also the church organist and choir director.

Janet, your comment about the youth being the Church of the future is true but the older folks are the backbone of the church today.  Sorry to read your church doesn't have much for the older folks.  Hope the doctor's appointment for Beth was satisfactory and he was able to change her medicine so she won't sleep all the time.  Hope the chiropractor was able to help with your discomfort.

Carol, glad to read you all had a safe trip to Tuscon and are getting settled in for the winter.  All the reports I hear predict a hard winter so you will be glad to be where it is warm.  We live basically off of a frontage road for I-20 and we can hear traffic noises day and night of trucks on the highway.  Too bad you couldn't call the patrol about the unsafe truck driver.  Usually they are pretty good although had one come right up on my bumper this week and I really dislike that to happen.  I always try to leave a distance between our car and the one ahead of us.  Fortunately the traffic is great around here and even driving on the Interstate is usually very easy.  I agree with you that the CNN debate was an hour too long and having that many participate is ridiculous.

Carol

We went to our favorite breakfast place near here and chatted with our favorite waitress's daughter.  What a giving family - our normal waitress has adopted  I think 7 children after "being blessed with three".  the daughter we met today is just as lovely.

It does sound like this winter will be harsh - more than normal but who can really predict???

Janet

Carol, I cannot imagine moving to a different place to spend the winter!  I would love to, but ....I don't really think that will happen!  Glad you are safely there and will be settled in for the winter.

I attended the funeral for a sweet lady who worked at our bank for 45 years, this morning.  It was a really different service, from any I previously attended.  They played one of her and her husband's favorite songs they used to dance to,  Kansas City, while passing out candy bars to everyone there!  They said at her retirement party, her   boss had teased her about the number of candy bars she could, and did, eat, without ever gaining weight, and how she would smile at everyone while they watched her eat them.  And at the end of the service, they played the couple's other favorite dance tune, Mack the Knife.  Yeah, different!  I think it's such a good change how funerals have evolved, and now are truly a tribute to the departed person.  I forgot to say that the pastor said we could eat the candy in church, and most people did!  This was the Methodist church, where the lady had attended all her life.  She was a lifelong resident of this county.  Her husband has been in the care home for several years now, and she was always so faithful in visiting him, dragging her oxygen bottle along.  Really a nice couple.

I'm working on wedding stuff.  I got a pretty "bling" thing sewn onto her veil last night--on the second try!  First time, after struggling with it and getting done, I discovered it would be upside down!   :ticked:  So I cut the threads and started all over again.  It wasn't an easy task!  Next, I am going to re-make the lace skirt I bought for her, so it will have more fullness in the front.  I hope that won't be a really tough job.

It has been nice and cool here all day.  One can really feel Fall in the air!  Darrel brought in another nice batch of ripe tomatoes from the garden!  Yum!  And he is cooking a chicken on the grill for supper.  It is so nice to have him feeling better again!

Larry, I think I have only eaten Shepherd's Pie once, and it was at a friend's house, and was a frozen variety.  Not too impressive. ;)  I agree that there should be things for the folks who mostly support the church and have made it what it is today.

I think I will go see what I might make to add to the chicken for our supper.

Trust and Obey is one of the hymns I memorized as a nine year old in order to earn a trophy in Junior Church. :)  The admonition in those words has followed me throughout my life.

I have been a bit preoccupied lately, but feel I should share something with y'all here.  Earlier this month I mentioned I'd been advised to wait another month before going to California.  The thought behind that was it is still too hot there -- I don't do heat well  :-[-- It turned out to be the best advise I could have. About that time those horrendous fires broke out, as well, and one is very close to my daughter and grandson!

I look back and see how God had His hand in all of this, and I am still trusting Him and intend to continue obeying His leading.

I had a routine doctor appointment on the 9th, and doc scheduled me for a mammogram.  That happened on the 17th, but I was called back for a retake on the 22nd. Seems there is an "abnormality" and I was treated to another mammogram and then an ultrasound.  The Radiologist wanted me to immediately have a biopsy... I should see a surgeon right away. He sent the report to my doc.  Today (23rd) my doctor had me come in "immediately" to discuss the results of these tests.  He said "it's a little more solid than we'd like it to be, and needs to be removed" and sent me to a surgeon to schedule a biopsy, which will happen on the 2nd of October.  That's the earliest possible date they could find (through much negotiation).

I am not concerned, I have perfect peace ... I told my friend, Nita, that I just don't have time for this now. but I can see it is a good thing I didn't try to go to California this month. Agree?

An interesting look back .... My appointment was for 3 o'clock yesterday, so I had a chance to go to the Senior Movie in the morning.  Want to take a guess at the selection for this month?  War Room! Its a great movie about prayer and trusting and surrendering to let God fight the battle for you. He prepared me for the news from the radiology lab. :)
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass .... it's about learning to dance in the rain!

Jane, do keep us up to date on your results.  Meanwhile, know that prayers follow you - from way off in New York State.

Hi everyone.  It is an overcast morning with the good possibility of rain and a predicted high of only 69 degrees.  We had a good dinner at church last night and the Bible study was very interesting as we talked about the early church.  The next few days are going to be busy.  We are looking forward to the next few days as we have something special planned.  I will fill you in on Monday and may just post very brief messages until then just to let you know that I am OK.

Carol, the waitress must have a very caring heart and concern for others. We have friends whose son and his wife took in three abused children to care for and are not in the process of trying to adopt them.  Our friends love the children already as their grandchildren and indicated the children have really blossomed under the loving care of their son and his wife.

Janet, that was an unusual funeral.  I bet she was a very fun person to be around.

Jane, sorry you are going to have to go through all of this but you know who controls your life and God will see you through whatever is ahead.  It does sound like you were wise to delay your travels.

Carol

I always thought that the funerals of a marching band in New Orleans playing Jazz has it right - rejoicing in the move upstairs!

Janet:  I am here because Don (who was born and raised in Duluth, Minn) has become addicted to warm winters - at least not as rough as we sometimes have at home.  Also - this is our way of really getting away from so many interruptions and just having time to visit - get out for almost daily walks, etc.  Consider it one of our privileges in life and so very thankful.  Best wishes for your sewing for Beth's dress.

Jane:  Will send up a prayer for you on your biopsy results - may tender hearts and hands guide your treatment and tests.

Larry:  Cannot wait to hear your special news.

Candy bars at a funeral - now that is an interesting idea.  It has to be chocolate.  Maybe I will just test some chocolate bars to choose which ones are the best   ::)

Ruth Ann Bice

Hi, friends,

Wow! A lot of news today. Jane, I'll be keeping you in my prayers.

I don't have to move to a warmer climate - since I live on the 13th floor of an apartment tower, the heat rises from the floors beneath me, and often I have no heat at all during the winter. :)

My sister in law is in the hospital. When I picked her up to take her to a foot doctor's appointment, the doctor and I agreed she was in such poor condition that she had to go to emergency. They have admitted her. She was weak, dehydrated, and having so much difficulty breathing that she's on oxygen and is receiving breathing treatments. So, life just got busier for me...feeding her cat, checking mail and apartment, and seeing her in the hospital. It would be good if you could pray for us both.

Y'all have a good rest of the day.

Love to all,
Ruth Ann

Hi everyone.  Just stopping by to say all is fine.

Carol,  my news is particularly exciting but something I didn't want to share until after the fact.

Ruth Ann,  sorry that your SIL is in such bad shape.  The dehydration alone can do great damage.  Glad she is getting the treatment she needs.  I will remember you in my prayers.

Janet

Larry, I look forward to hearing your exciting news!  Ruth Ann, hope your SIL is better soon.  Dehydration is a very bad thing.  I have to remind myself often to drink more water.

John Boehner is out.  All news last night was Pope, Pope, Pope, not one other thing!

I took my friend Dee out to lunch today.  She was really happy to see me!  Beth seems to be doing better, now that the muscle relaxer has been cut down and she can stay awake more.

Nothing else new here today.  See you later!
