JennyW: Also, does anyone know other photo sharing sites that are Christian? 2023-05-16, 08:47:03

JennyW: Hello Everyone! I really miss activity on this site. I've been discouraged by photography sites where you have to sort through so much explicit content in order to see photos that truly glorify God. I'd love to see this site pick up again. 2023-05-16, 08:46:36

Morning Devotional...

Daniel's Gloves
--Author Unknown

I sat, with two friends, in the picture window of a quaint restaurant just off the corner of the town square. The food and the company were both especially good that day.

As we talked, my attention was drawn outside, across the street. There, walking into town, was a man who appeared to be carrying all his worldly goods on his back. He was carrying, a well-worn sign that read, "I will work for food." My heart sank.

I brought him to the attention of my friends and noticed that others around us had stopped eating to focus on him. Heads moved in a mixture of sadness and disbelief. We continued with our meal, but his image lingered in my mind. We finished our meal and went our separate ways. I had errands to do and quickly set out to accomplish them. I glanced toward the town square, looking somewhat halfheartedly for the strange visitor. I was fearful, knowing that seeing him again would call some response.

I drove through town and saw nothing of him. I made some purchases at a store and got back in my car. Deep within me, the Spirit of God kept speaking to me: "Don't go back to the office until you've at least driven once more around the square."

Then, with some hesitancy, I headed back into town. As I turned the square's third corner, I saw him. He was standing on the steps of the storefront church, going through his sack. I stopped and looked, feeling compelled to speak to him, yet wanting to drive on. The empty parking space on the corner seemed to be a sign from God, an invitation to park. I pulled in, got out and approached the town's newest visitor.

"Looking for the pastor?" I asked.

"Not really," he replied, "Just resting."

"Have you eaten today?"

"Oh, I ate something early this morning."

"Would you like to have lunch with me?"

"Do you have some work I could do for you?"

"No work," I replied. "I commute here to work from the city, but I would like to take you to lunch."

"Sure," he replied with a smile.

As he began to gather his things, I asked some surface questions. "Where you headed?"

"St. Louis "

"Where you from?"

"Oh, all over; mostly Florida ..."

"How long you been walking?"

"Fourteen years," came the reply.

I knew I had met someone unusual. We sat across from each other in the same restaurant I had left earlier. His face was weathered slightly beyond his 38 years. His eyes were dark yet clear, and he spoke with an eloquence and articulation that was startling He removed his jacket to reveal a bright red T-shirt that said, "Jesus is The Never Ending Story."

Then Daniel's story began to unfold. He had seen rough times early in life. He'd made some wrong choices and reaped the consequences. Fourteen years earlier, while backpacking across the country, he had stopped on the beach in Daytona. He tried to hire on with some men, who were putting up a large tent and some equipment for what he thought would be a concert.

He was hired, but the tent would not house a concert. Instead it was used for revival services, and in those services, he saw life more clearly. He gave his life over to God

"Nothing's been the same since," he said, "I felt the Lord, telling me to keep walking, and so I did, some 14 years now."

"Ever think of stopping?" I asked.

"Oh, once in a while, when it seems to get the best of me... But God has given me this calling. I give out Bibles. That's what's in my sack. I work to buy food and Bibles, and I give them out when His spirit leads."

I sat amazed. My homeless friend was not homeless. He was on a mission and lived this way by choice. The question burned inside for a moment, then I asked: "What's it like?"

"What?"

"To walk into a town carrying all your things on your back and to show your sign?'

"Oh, it was humiliating at first. People would stare and make comments. Once someone tossed a piece of half-eaten bread and made a gesture that certainly didn't make me feel welcome. But then it became humbling to realize that God was using me to touch lives and change people's concepts of other folks like me."

My concept was changing, too. We finished our dessert and gathered his things. Just outside the door, he paused. He turned to me and said, "Come Ye blessed of my Father and inherit the kingdom I've prepared for you. For when I was hungry you gave me food, when I was thirsty you gave me drink, a stranger and you took me in."

I felt as if we were on holy ground. "Could you use another Bible?" I asked.

He said he preferred a certain translation. It traveled well and was not too heavy... It was also his personal favorite. "I've read through it 14 times," he said.

"I'm not sure we've got one of those, but let's stop by our church and see." I was able to find my new friend a Bible that would do well, and he seemed very grateful.

"Where are you headed from here?" I asked.

"Well, I found this little map on the back of this amusement park coupon."

"Are you hoping to hire on there for a while?"

"No, I just figure I should go there. I figure someone under that star right there needs a Bible, so that's where I'm going next."

He smiled, and the warmth of his spirit radiated the sincerity of his mission. I drove him back to the town square where we'd met two hours earlier, and as we drove, it started raining. We parked and unloaded his things.

"Would you sign my autograph book?" he asked. "I like to keep messages from folks I meet."

I wrote in his little book that his commitment to his calling had touched my life. I encouraged him to stay strong. And I left him with a verse of scripture from Jeremiah: "I know the plans I have for you, declared the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you; Plans to give you a future and a hope."

"Thanks, man," he said. "I know we just met, and we're really just strangers, but I love you."

"I know," I said, "I love you, too."

"The Lord is good!"

"Yes, He is. How long has it been since someone hugged you?" I asked.

"A long time," he replied.

And so, on the busy street corner in the drizzling rain, my new friend and I embraced, and I felt deep inside that I had been changed... He put his things on his back, smiled his winning smile and said, "See you in the New Jerusalem."

'I'll be there!" was my reply.

He began his journey again. He headed away with his sign dangling from his bedroll and pack of Bibles. He stopped, turned and said, "When you see something that makes you think of me, will you pray for me?"

"You bet," I shouted back, "God bless."

"God bless." And that was the last I saw of him.

Late that evening, as I left my office, the wind blew strong. The cold front had settled hard upon the town. I bundled up and hurried to my car. As I sat back and reached for the emergency brake, I saw them, a pair of well-worn brown work gloves neatly laid over the length of the handle. I picked them up and thought of my friend. I wondered if his hands would stay warm that night without them.

Then I remembered his words: "If you see something that makes you think of me, will you pray for me?" Today his gloves lie on my desk in my office. They help me to see the world and its people in a new way, and they help me remember those two hours with my unique friend and to pray for his ministry. "See you in the New Jerusalem," he said.

Yes, Daniel, I know I will...

"I shall pass this way but once. Therefore, any good that I can do or any kindness that I can show, let me do it now, for I shall not pass this way again."

Let's continue to pray for one another. God bless and have a nice day!

I found these words on a plaque at my mother's home and posted them at her memorial service (on the table with the guest book).  It was the way she lived, too.
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass .... it's about learning to dance in the rain!

Janet

Thank you Jeanne, Marilyn and Jane.  You have encouraged me this morning.  As I was working on posting the above, the enemy kept whispering in my ear, "Don't post that!  It's too long!, etc. etc."  So you have confirmed that I heard from God when I saved it a while back to post today.

It is very cold here this morning.  We really enjoyed hearing Shiloh last night.  These guys are from Texas, they come here at least once a year, and have great voices.  They really glorify the Lord with their singing.

Pat and I had planned to go to Garden or somewhere to shop today, but I am thinking she won't want to get out in this severe cold.  I must call and check with her.  If we aren't going, I guess I will do some shopping online.

Jane ~ I got Susan Boyle's CD Saturday and Ivalou and I watched David Foster and Andrea Bocelli on PBS last evening.  Wonderful music and singing!

Ivalou and I did get to go to the Christmas Cantata at church last evening.  Wonderful singing and the church was packed.  Afterwards was a cookie reception and punch.  Everyone was surprised to see Ivalou there.  I didn't tell anyone I was bringing her for fear she wouldn't get to come.  She said it did her heart good!

Today we woke to SNOW!  I went to Lapel to the drug store, the bank, the grocery store and Dollar General.  Lapel is in a different county from our homes.  You could tell when you crossed the county line.  They plowed our road before 8am.  Nothing done in Madison County.  Nothing!  Every intersection was slick!!!  Thank God, for ABS brakes.  At least you only slide forward!

The Visiting Nurse drove in about 10 minutes ago.  Still sitting in the van.  I just looked out the window.  She is moving so I guess she is okay.  Don't know why she is sitting out there!

We are trying to get Ivalou a perm before Christmas.  The number she usually calls isn't working.  What to do?

Larry Hanna

Hi everyone.  Janet, I also have read that story before but needed to be reminded of it.  God uses us in different ways and so often we are quick to judge because someone is different from us.  Thanks for using this for the devotional thought for this week.

Last evening we sang our Christmas Cantata and it was wonderful.  There was a good crowd in the congregation.  Several of my friends attended, which I appreciated.  If I have the opportunity I will prepare a special webpage with the music and post the link in a posting.  I am rather sad to see the performance time come and go as it was a wonderful group of numbers to practice and sing.

I took Stacey back to her apartment this morning and then had my usual Monday Men's luncheon.  Today we went to a new place for us, a French restaurant.  I had a Panini and it was very good.  The owner and cook is a French trained chef and everything is prepared fresh.   I am sure we will be going back there and I want to take Pat there.

Today is our choir Christmas party at one of the member's home.  It has been several years since we had a choir Christmas party so am looking forward to it.  I have one more Christmas related luncheon on Friday and that will be it until the holidays arrive.  We are expecting our son and his wife to come and spend a couple of days with us around the holidays so are looking forward to that.

Etta Sue, wonderful that Ivalou was up to attending your church activity and know it must do her wonders to be able to begin to get out.  You are a kind and loving sister to be so faithful to help her in so many ways.  I listened to 25 second snipets of the Susan Boyle CD on Amazon.com the day the album came out.  I just hope she can handle the fame and that it doesn't ruin her life.  She does have a beautiful voice.

Janet, I think some of that cold is seeping down here into the South.  It has been cold and chilly here today.

Jane, when we think back on our lives we can certainly realized that we do go this way only once.

Janet

Pat and I did go to Garden City and had a good day.  I was able to get several gifts for my family, and feel a little more in the Christmas mood now.  So I think in the next few days, I will put the tree up.  :D

Abby's school vocal program is tomorrow afternoon for the rest of the school, and I think I will attend that one rather than the night performance, as that way I won't have to drive at night.  (Am I getting older? Hmmm)

I am really tired, we did a lot of walking today.  So I think it will be an early night for this old girl.

Larry, I will look forward to hearing your program!  :)

Ruth Ann Bice

Hi, friends, well, I suppose it wasn't intended for me to attend worship yesterday. All night Friday, I was near the restroom with major tummy upset problems. It's been years since I lost my supper...

Then, crackers and tomato juice seemed to settle things down on Saturday night. I even took my bath and laid out my clothing. But, again, more tummy problems, so I was afraid to leave home.

Sometimes our plans get waylaid (and sometimes us with those plans!), but God has a purpose in all things.

Tomorrow I'll be playing piano for, and singing to, a Tuesday morning worship service we have here in my apartment building. It's been a blessing preparing for a 30-min prelude, followed by congregational singing and then the solo. Thankfully, there's no offering plate, either implied or real, here -- we simply gather to praise our Lord.

Well, y'all have a great rest of the evening.

Ruth Ann
...his compassions fail not.  They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Ruth Ann, I'm so sorry to hear about your tummy problems.  Glad they're over now.

Hi everyone.  We are awaiting the arrival of rain for later today and this evening.

We attended our choir Christmas party last evening.  Our hosts have a most beautiful home and were most gracious hosts.  No one wanted to leave and the party didn't break up until about 10 pm.  We had a very nice dinner (we all took something to share) and had a nice chance to visit with choir members and their spouses.  I was sorry to see the evening end.  Our hosts are the couple that travel the world and I asked the hostess how she could stand to be away from her beautiful home for such long periods.

Just routine things on my schedule for today and hope to be home to stay for the rest of the day after lunch.

Ruth Ann, sure hope you had a better night last night and that you are feeling much better today and will be able to play and sing as planned.

Time to leave for coffee.

Jeanne Lee

Larry, that sounds like a lovely way to spend an evening - in a beautiful home with gracious hosts and Christian friends.

My hot cup of coffee and programmed heat were especially welcome this morning.  At 8:45 a.m. the outside temperature was 15 F!  The whole area was earlier socked in with ice fog and black ice.   I'm sure glad I'm not working any more and didn't have to travel over the mountain in that kind of situation.

Janet:   Thanks for this weeks devotional.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.  Proverbs 3:6

Carol

Janet:  Very nice devotion. Thanks for your concern and I really have to stop talking about Don's hearing problem.  All of our research says there is no cure & there is no hearing aid that fixes the distorted musical tones.   Musicians are in much more danger of this happening than the average person so there are even a lot of very young and professionals out there who have had to change their careers.  Sad indeed.  But - there is a reason for this as in all happenings.

Our daughter took us out to lunch yesterday at Joe's Crab place.  She had chicken because, and I can't believe a child of mine does not eat seafood.  I grew up on salmon and crab because fishermen couldn't always afford to pay my dad and they would stop by with fruits from the sea.

We ran around to Costco and had some other stops in mind but it began to sleet and I told Don that we had better come straight home.  One son stopped by last night - we do love seeing the children so much more at this residence.  Don is trying to help a neighbor who has a husband with parkinson disease & she wants to know if he can go to a VA home if this gets worse - she is exhausted caring for him.

Ruth Ann:  Good that you are feeling better - your weekly gathering sounds wonderful.

It is really nice to see the Salvation Army buckets making a comeback.

Carol

Here is something I never thought about!  Take care.

    GPS
Someone had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans.

Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard.

When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen.

The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents.

Something to consider if you have a GPS - don't put your home address in it. Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen.

    MOBILE PHONES
    I never thought of this.......

This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet.... Etc...was stolen.

20 minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says 'I received your text asking about our Pin number and I've replied a little while ago.'

When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text 'hubby' in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.

    Moral of the lesson:
Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list.

Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc....

And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back.

Also, when you're being text by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet 'family and friends' who text you.

Jane Walker

Wow, Carol, that is certainly something to think about.   :o

I don't have either a GPS or a cell phone, but I have family members (almost all of them) who do ...

Wel I am back.  This has taken longer than I expected, but hopefully things will work better this time.

I have read the posts, so now I will go on and see what else is new.

Etta Sue

A lot better morning today than yesterday.  Yesterday was our first snow and a surprise to the highway departments.  Lots of accidents yesterday for those who had to get out and drive.

We woke up by the phone today.  Always Ivalou has gotten her shower in the a.m. but today the bath lady is coming between 2-3 pm.  Speech therapy just left.  Seems Ivalou will be done with home therapy by Christmas.  Then if the doctor wants more therapy we will have to go to Noblesville for rehab.  But hopefully not until after the New Year.

She is planning on getting a perm at Walmart tomorrow after physical therapy.  I want to get a hair cut since Ivalou used to cut my hair but now is unable.

I have a GPS and should put a different address in than my own for My Home.  Never thought about that.  But then my garage is detached so a thief couldn't get into my house with just my GPS and remote control garage opener.  And my cell doesn't have my address in it...just my phone number.  And all contacts are by name...not sis or son or brother.  Food for thought, though!

Here is a late note - my brother's site on Facebook has been hacked into - apparently someone took his name and said they were in London and had a problem and needed money right away.  Daughter called me right away.  We really don't know what to do except ignore the message.  Does anyone have any idea as to what we should do about a problem like this?  I am so fed up with the rotten people who get into everything and have to ruin lives.

JudyB:   Love it - and it is so true.  WalMart has Christmas music though and so does Hobby Lobby, which always closes on Sundays.  I really don't care to see those other people's names even mentioned in the jingle though - they are irrelevant in my opinion.   :coffee:

Hi Don!  It is a different world today and there are a lot of scams and theft out there all blamed on the economy.  What a shame - it is really an excuse to try to have more than the other person.

Don and I just watched an old movie with James Garner - no foul language, no nudity, and all - it was a nice movie called 36 Hours.  Rare to find these days.

It is almost time to hit the hay here and I am trying to cool a turkey that took forever to cook, well I started late and this need to cool a little more before I put it in the ref. in the garage.  Anyone want a drumstick?

I hope the coyotes don't smell my cooking.  Our neighbor was bitten on a bike ride and he has gone through rabies shots.  A lone coyote too which is unusual as they do have packs here in the open space.  Not so cute anymore.

Good morning!  I skipped posting yesterday, but I did come in and read.  Jane, yes, we are all getting older.  That was really "tongue in cheek" so to speak.  I started to say OLD, but didn't like thinking that!  ;)

B-r-r-r-r!  We have a wind chill factor of minus 15 here this morning.  My front storm door is nicely and thickly decorated by Jack Frost.  But the sun is shining brightly, so it should warm up before long.

Yesterday Kristi put me through a really intense full-body workout, but I am going to go later today because Darrel took my car, and I don't want to go out to the other garage and get the other car.  Call me lazy if you want to.

Ugh.  Harry Reid is once again lying on the TV.  They are just determined to ruin our country.  >:(  :(  If we let things like this, the facebook thing Carol Mentioned, Tiger Woods' mess, etc. get our focus off the Lord, the world would look black indeed.  In Copenhagen at the Climate conference thing, poor countries are demanding that wealthier ones pay for their part in changing the climate.   :clobber: :uglystupid:  The whole global warming thing is a farce!  OK, off my soapbox now.

I actually put up my tree yesterday, and did a few more little things to make it look like Christmas here.  Still lots to do to get ready for the big day, but at least you can tell it is coming here.  ;) ha.

Here is Darrel back, so I will go work out now.

I wish you all a wonderful day walking with the Lord.

I get so frustrated with all the ETalk and the like.  It is all gossip and doesn't reveal any truth.  We have it in Christian Circles as well.  I do so admire John Tesh and his stand on gossip.  After he became a Christian he left ETalk as he was convicted that he was gossiping.
Instead of condemning these terrible sins, we should pray for their salvation.
Sin is sin, and we all sin.  It is just, our sin is often hidden behind a smile.  I mourn over the ruined lives that get paraded in front of us on a daily basis, and pray someone will enter their lives to show them the Way.

We have snow, wind and cold here today.  We were prepared, John headed outof it before it all started,  school buses are cancelled, the first of the season.  This will happen a few more times before winter blows itself out.

Janet I am not in any way ready for Christmas.  Good for you getting things looking a little more like Christmas.

I have to get the fire going, thought it was but the fan hasn't blown hot at all.  So I must go.  Be back later.

Etta Sue

I have made up my mind that if I am still here at Ivalou's, I am not putting out any Christmas decorations at home.  The two cats would have them destroyed.  Seems they are doing all kinds of things because Mommy isn't home!  Grrr! I guess it is their way of telling me they don't like me not being there.  At least I can go home a couple of times a day!

We are waiting on PT to come and then head to WalMart.  We are having strong winds and spittin' snow but it is suppose to get to 48 degrees  so no snow then.  We will take the wheelchair in case she needs it also.

It was only 19° when I got up and turned on my computer. It is 27° now and the weather man this morning said it wouldn't get very much over 30° today. This is not the normal weather pattern here from what I have been told. Poor Nita doesn't have any water as her pipes are frozen, Hopefully none are broken.

Etta Sue Fritzy loves to get into the trees lowest branches and take a nap. I didn't  put any decorations on the  two sets of the lowest branches for that reason. But he has still been able to get to some of the ornaments. Grubby doesn't even mess with the tree; when he is in the house he just likes to sleep either on the back of the sofa on the throw or in my lap. Fritzy loves the dog biscuits too.

I have been doing some  work for Keith on my computer looking up Seismic information he needs and printing out Aerial maps of his projects.  So he  buys the  printer ink out of the office budget. That is about all I have been printing anyway and those maps sure use up a lot of ink.

The only  Christmas trees at Target that I  saw upside down were the trees in the tree lot to help keep them from drying out. That was in Eureka last year.

Hi Everyone...

Well, I'm in a "winter wonderland" here!  We had quite the storm all night with really high winds and blowing snow but it's passed by now.

It's so nice to read all of your posts.

Chris Saunders over in England had a terrible mishap with his computer and he's posted about it HERE.  So, please click on that word, "HERE" and read all about it.

Hi everyone.  I came in and read a coupe of times yesterday but didn't have the opportunity to post.  So will start the new day off with a posting before getting busy again today.

Yesterday was Bible study with the Pastor and then we had coffee at Dunkin' Donuts and then the group all went to lunch.  Last evening was choir practice.  We practice again next week and then will be given two weeks off as we have the music prepared for the next 4 weeks.

Today shouldn't be so busy.  I do have to pick up the rest of a prescription where they had run out of the medicine so could fill only part of it.  Pat was going to pick it up yesterday when she was at the doctor's office but got busy and forgot to stop back and pick up the prescription from the pharmacy.  I may do a little Christmas shopping while I am out this morning.  We also have a box to get ready and mail today.  The rest of the day is mine.

We had a beautiful day here yesterday with warm weather and sunshine.  It turned colder last evening and I think it is cloudy this morning but suppose to clear off by the afternoon.

Paul, congratulations Grandpa.  A new grandchild is always exciting.  Know you will be anxious to see Collin.

Pat, hope it doesn't take too long for the snow to melt up your way although it sounds like it is will be pretty cold up there today.

Marilyn, it is nice that you can help Keith with some of his work.  I am sure he appreciates your help.

Etta Sue, I find the Wal-Marts are so large that sometimes I have had to use the electric carts to get around or end up so tired I ruins the rest of the day.  I would agree with you on the Christmas decorations.  Pat has put out several and we have our little two foot Christmas tree put up where we can see it here in our family room.  It is just right. Now need to get some presents under and around the tree.

Judy, you lost me with the "Etalk".  Don't think I know what that means.  It sounds like you have your computer fixed.

Janet, I must say I basically agree with your comments.  We really need to pray for our country.  It sounds like it is really cold out in Kansas.  Pat talked with her sister in Independence, MO, last evening and it was suppose to be a -5 wind chill factor there last night.

Carol, I think if my page on Facebook was hacked I would post a quick message about it being compromised and then would try to close it out and open another page or go on to something else.

Time to get busy with some other things before leaving for the morning activities.
