Indiana had an earthquake this morning!!

I had gotten up around 6 and turned on the fireplace since I have been turning down the temperature on the furnace.  The heat pump hasn't been working good this year.  I went back to bed and woke up suddenly just before 8am.  It sounded like a vrrrooooom!  My first thought was the house was on fire due to the fireplace!!  I ran to the living room...the cats were scared!  Nothing out of place or different.  Then I notice a noise.  A tinkling sound.  I realized it was a sun catcher on the front window.  I pushed it against the window to stop it and when I let go, it started rattling again!!  Finally it quit.  All I noticed was most of the snow had disappeared over night and it was above freezing.

I went back to bed and soon realized it was raining.  So I figured what I had experienced was a huge thunder-boom.  When I finally did get up, I got an email from a neighbor.  4.2 earthquake centered at Greentown, IN, just before 8am.  Greentown is north and about 35-40 minutes away.  Now the noon news is saying it has changed to 3.8 on the richter (sp) scale.  So far only minor damage like gutters down and things stuck in the ground like yard ornaments that are askew!  The news just now said that it has been 175 years since an earthquake centered north of Indianapolis.

But an earthquake in Indiana?  But we are on a fault here...just not very active.

Yesterday Kitty and I went swimming....as well as a whole bunch of other people.  Noisy and probably 10 people all the time in the 6 lane lap pool!  We would swim a link, turn to go back and someone was in your lane.  You are suppose to ask permission to share a lane but not yesterday.  I did swim either 26 or 32 links.  Lost count.  But I can sure feel it today.  My chest hurts from the free-style activity.  I hadn't been swimming since Nov 30th!

And today when I got up, I turned on the heat pump.  It's 40 degrees so the heat pump should be working but it was giving off cool air.  Not cold but not even warm air.  So I called the company that installed it and they are coming tomorrow morning.  Hope that it is fixable and not too costly!

That's it.  Most of the snow is gone and the temps are better.  This is only the third day in December that is has been above 32 degrees!!

Etta sue I hear about your earthquake on FOX news this morning.
3.8 is not a very big shaker I am surprised that there is any damage at all.

We're on a fault, too, here in northern New York.  But I can only recall one earthquake and that was about 25 or 30 years ago.  Sounded like a train was coming right at the house and then the floor started to shake.  I don't remember how far away the center was, but it was supposedly a 5.something.  No damage here and I don't think there were any reports of damage any place else.

It is 1:00 A.M. We arrived back about an hour ago. All went well although we noticed ice on the parking lot of the WalMart where we stopped at 10:00 P.M. I drove carefully, just in case.

I have been in three locations where earthquakes have hit however never severe enough to cause any damage. The epicenters were always quite a distance from where I was!

Larry: Yes we had lots to eat and no one noticed the missing carrots!  My son and I made a bean soup on Monday and the carrots got all used up!!

Hi everyone.  We are having a beautiful day and the temp is already at 45 degrees and headed into the 60s today.  Rain is expected later today or tonight and tomorrow but still relatively warm.  The sun is out now.  I just got back from our Friday men's coffee and this morning we went to McDonald's as the city hall is closed.  There were nine men in attendance.  A couple of them were planning on playing golf later this morning as it is such a nice day.

Etta Sue and Jeanne, I can relate to the earthquake experience as lived in Alaska in the late 60's.  While I was there we had a couple of quakes.  One of them was while I was at work and my desk chair, with me in it, suddenly rolled back from the desk and into the bookcase that was behind it.  Everything rattled and moved around a bit.  I don't think there was any damage.  Our landlady, who lived in the duplex next to us, was scared to death of earthquakes as had experienced the big quake in 1966 that did so much damage in Anchorage.  Where I live now is a part of the Stone Mountain formation and I don't know whether we would feel a quake or if there is a fault near.  When I worked we were concerned and were planning for transportation needs for the New Madrid fault in Southeastern Missouri and the Memphis area, which hasn't happened yet but is anticipated.  Etta Sue, glad you had no damage.  Sorry to hear of your problems with your heat pump.  We had a heat pump in Maryland which is really disliked.  Down here I think they work pretty well.  We do have one for our upstairs room over the garage.

Ruth V, I am glad to read that you had no problems with the roads on your trip to Toronto.  Sure you were glad to get back home.

I plan on staying home the rest of the day and start to work on the files for the upcoming Golden Games.  I also plan to finish reading my Zane Grey story.  It has really been good.

I know that many of you know Joan Lavelle (Biscuit on the old SeniorNet).  I read this morning in another forum that she is in the hospital with, I think, the flu

Happy New Year everyone.  We will be staying home tonight as we do most years.

Our little earthquake was nothing compared to what I have seen on TV.  Just a little quivering in the earth...enough to jiggle a sun catcher on my window.  I didn't even notice the vertical blinds moving!!  And as for damage, the gutter that was shown on TV was full of ice so it may have fallen anyway.  The wooden trellis they showed was leaning but could have been the ground thawing.  But the crack in a business's wall probably was from the quake!  No big deal...other than it was an earthquake in central Indiana!

Betty, Marge, Ivalou and I went last night to Steak and Shake to eat...our Christmas present from Marge.  Then we went to the movies...our Christmas present from Betty.  We saw 'The Little Fockers'.  It was funny but I wouldn't want to watch it with my son!  I can't remember the last movie that I saw or even who played in it.  Just know it was PG and very good.

I am waiting on the repairman to come and fix my heat pump!!

Sun is shining now and 51 degrees!!!  Whooo-eee!!  Maybe I will get the bows off my deck today!

Here we are at the end of 2010.  I'm still not used to writing 2010 on my checks and now I have to start with 2011!   :(

It's not only the end of the year, but today is the last Friday of the month.  Gene always claimed that was the "weather breeder" for the coming month.  I sure hope that holds true this time.  It's lovely today - sunny and mild, maybe even above freezing this afternoon.  Of course a few days into the month and I won't remember what today was like!

JOhn just told me that Phoenix Arizona and New Mexico are snowed in.  That is almost unheard of. On the way home from solway MN the plows were pulled off the road. There was zero visibility. John was at the leading edge of the stom although he did hit some freezing rain.  Thankfully John is back in the province safely.

RuthV Glad you are home safely. Someone else coming up from the south had their car break down at PTown. and is parked at the circle.

Well I have to go, much to do before John gets home.

Carol

I am perplexed that a message comes about my password being incorrect and then I type in exactly what it has been all along and today I am able to enter CP.  Thankful.

We are east of Scottsdale and a bit north and east of Phoenix.  The snow is really in upper levels although it did snow at a lower altitude that where we are now.  Yes, they can get hailstorms here too as we have been in a few of them over the years.  Northern Arizona and parts of New Mexico easily get snow too - have been caught in many a storm.  Luckily and thankfully missed the storms this year.

JudyB:  Thankfully, John beat that storm.  The truckers have quite a time and people don't slow down.  The daughter of friends of my daughter was killed in a fog/snow storm recently.  Very sad.

Janet:  False alarm from me.  I was able to get into CP today - just have to retype my password, isn't that strange?

Jeanne Lee:  I hope it isn't the "weather breeder for the next month".  It is freezing here now - yikes.

Today, Don hung a drapery rod and put in tie-backs for our bedroom.  It does look softer on the wall.  We went to a hardware store and I found those little towel hangers for one under the kitchen sink and one under the bathroom sink.  All over town, it seems a lot of stores are open for what used to be a national holiday - it is a display the flag day.

Now to seach for a church service on Sunday.

I watched her fix it she had control of my computer. She  went in to the command mode then  ipconfig and pinged this site using different codes until it worked.

Marilyn, maybe you can tell Nita about this as she can't get to CP either.

Thanks so much and good to see you.

Pat I thought Nita finally got in. I got an email from her that said get got in.
I will ask her then tell her to call Frontier and ask for the same tech who helped me.

I am late today, but still in time to wish each of you a Happy New Year!!

Carol, glad to see you got on.  Between having a house guest for about a week, and checking every day on Beth and Mom, plus the usual stuff, I didn't check emails as soon as I normally would.  And then I saw your post and was glad you made it in.  Don't get buried under the white stuff up there!

We got a little weather last night.  Freezing rain, then about an inch and a half of snow.  The temp dropped from an afternoon high of a balmy 64 yesterday to 7* this morning!  Roads pretty slippery.

May I ask again for prayers for our Beth?  She called today to tell me they think she has shingles!!  :o  I immediately took some apple cider vinegar up there and told them how to use it:  Give her two tablespoons in half a glass of water to drink in the morning; use a cotton ball to dab pure vinegar on the shingles as often as needed.  I found this on the internet back when Darrel had shingles and he got immediate relief and it cleared them up quickly.  The expensive prescriptions did NOTHING for him.  Beth's doctor was supposed to come see her, but never made it.  He was on ER duty today.  Then I had to make another trip up there later to take Beth some other meds I get for her, as she forgot to tell me she was out when she called.  The shingles are on her bottom, which is a concern because she sits so much and they always worry about skin breakdown.  (If it really is shingles.)  She is in isolation, everybody has to gown up and wear masks and gloves to go into her room.  They say there are several cases of it in the home.

Mom seems some better these past three days.

I will be working up there this next week some, don't know yet how much.

Pat, I loved the Jackie Lawson card.  She does such a good job!  Loved yours, too, Jeanne.

Hi everyone and Happy New Year.  As we usually do we stayed home last night and I saw the new year in behind closed eyelids.  I had watched a couple of football games and finished reading my Zane Grey book (which was a good read) so was tired.  I had gone over to Sam's Club right after lunch for a couple of items and it was packed as were all the store parking lots I saw in the area.

Pat finished taking down the Christmas decorations yesterday and got them stored away in the garage.  So now we are ready for the housekeepers to come on Monday.

I have a meeting to attend this morning and then we are attending a 70th birthday party for a very good friend of mine.  That will be it for the day other than watch some more football and do some more reading.

Janet, so sorry to read that Beth may have shingles.  I have had several friends who suffered from them.  I had the shingles shot two or three years ago.  Pat didn't think she needed it but her doctor checked her blood and found she did.  However, they cannot get the serum for the shots so she is still waiting and it has been several months.  I do hope the vinegar treatment does the job and gets them stopped.

Etta Sue

Again Betty, Marge, Ivalou and I went out last evening.  This time to King Chef to eat and then to Marge's house to watch 'White Christmas'.  I truly don't think I have ever seen the movie.  And this one had been colorized.  Good movie.

I did stay up to see the ball drop but was in bed within 10 minutes afterward.  Shortly after shutting off the light, I thought I heard fireworks from the neighbors down the road but it was thunder.  But today the sun is shining bright with a slight breeze and 38 degrees.

Tony came a little after 9am.  I was going to drive last evening but my car was deader than a doornail!  Tony jumped my car with his truck.  No lights were left on so I have no idea why it died other than not starting it since Monday and it was so cold.  But it was dead...nothing.  Not even an unh when I turned the key!

Now today Ivalou and I are going out to eat and try to find some cabbage for wealth for the New Year.  Even cole slaw is cabbage but a big mess of fried cabbage sure does sound good!!

Happy New Year.  2010 was good to me...2011 has to be better!!

Janet

B-r-r-r-r-r!!  Kansas is finally having Kansas winter weather!  Our temps went to -11 last night!  And our water would only run a tiny stream this morning, but at least it wasn't fully frozen, so thawed pretty quickly.  The sun is shining brightly, so I'm sure it will warm up.

Etta Sue, I have never heard of cabbage bringing wealth in the New Year!  Interesting.  Black-eyed peas, I had heard, but not cabbage.  So I guess if we eat both, we should do really great, huh?  ;)

We are having guests for supper, and Darrel has decided to make meatloaf, Roy's favorite thing.  I had a cherry pie in the freezer, cherries off our trees, and they both are crazy about cherry pie, so they should be happy campers!  I think I will leave my little tree up until tomorrow.  The other things are already down and put away.

Did I tell you Darrel gave me a new camera for Christmas?  It's a Canon Rebel EOS 500D.  Now I have a lot to learn!  I have been studying the manual and playing with it.  It has two lenses, both with image stabilizers.  So from now on, if I don't get good photos, the fault is not with the camera!

Thanks for your prayers and concern for Beth.  I am still hoping that it is NOT shingles!

God bless us, every one!

Marilyn

Oh boy Janet I would dearly love to have your new camera. By the way how old is Beth, if you don't mind my asking. I have talked to the Lord about her many, many times and more so  recently, along with your mother, you and Darrell. I try to remember everyone   who is not feeling well or has specific requests. I really should write them all down.

I was still awake at midnight and heard a few firecrackers, not nearly as many as last year and not as close either.

The sun is out here today and it is  up a few degrees from yesterday. I have to wash my hair and I usually let it air dry. I don't like to use the blow dryer as it makes my hair too flyaway.

We are into our January Thaw.  There is hardly any snow left on the fields.  White Christmas, green New Years!  John went into the garden to dump some ashes a week ago and was up to his tighs in snow.

This is a quiet day.  John is working on two projects for heather and Jon for tomorrow, and they will be done very soon.  I have some good pics, for "Where We Live" and will be posting them soon.

Marilyn I have a little book that I put my prayer list in.  Just a little dollar store book that works well.

Janet I can't wait to see the results of your experiments with the camera.  You can know I am praying for your whole situation.

Etta Sue I have never hears of cabbage for wealth either.....then again I have never heard of peas either sooooo We will have to discuss these ideas!.

Bye for now.

Janet

Marilyn, Beth is now a very young 48.  Our doctor who left said to me, "Who wouldn't love Beth?  She is such an INNOCENT!"  She is quite child-like in many ways, not childish, though.  She is loving, trusting, and has a great sense of humor.  Thanks for praying for her, Mom, and us.  It is very much appreciated.

Well, we should be wealthy, I guess!  Darrel put cabbage in the roaster with a big meatloaf he is making for supper, along with potatoes, carrots and onions.  ;)

I wanted to tell all of you that if you get a chance to read the book Heaven is for Real, do read it!  It was written by a young man who grew up here in our town, and is the story of his little boy, not quite four years old, who barely survived a burst appendix.  A few weeks or months afterward, he began telling his parents things about heaven--things he couldn't possibly have learned here on earth.  It is very well written, and really makes you think about our eternal home!  One comment he made is, "in heaven, nobody is old, and nobody wears glasses."  I asked for it for Christmas, didn't get it, ordered it on Amazon, and read it yesterday.  Once you start reading, you can hardly lay it down!

Judy, you had a little typo, said John was up to his tighs, and I mentally put in a letter, making it tights, then had to giggle.     Maybe because I heard on TV about some guy dressing in a tutu and mask to rob a bank. Ha.

Funny posts about typos.

Janet:  Prayers going your way.  I never knew that shingles could be contagious.  Oh, my - I hope they diagnosis it correctly and get a handle on it.  Darrel made a good-sounding meal in the roaster.

Larry:  We did watch the NYC ball drop and talked about how we would never care to be standing with all those people.  Crowds freak us out.  Smiling at your note about seeing the new year in with eyes closed.  None of the family goes out either as they were never allowed even into late teens so I guess they keep up our tradition of only walking to a house in the neighborhood or having someone over.

We just got back from a two mile walk as the temperature finally went up.  Nice pond to walk around & ducks are all over the place.
