This lake is just outside my window ... it has been frozen over for a few days, and the swans and ducks have been keeping a small area in the middle open, but it keeps closing in on them. The blue heron has been fishing ... he is standing on ice.
Poor birds. You could go out there with a hammer and bust up the ice for them.
Actually, I've watched the swans doing that. They go to the edge of the ice and then bump and kick on it to break it off.
It's warmer now, and raining, so the ice is nearly gone. At least there is a much larger area for the birds to swim.
I like that picture, Jane! I was thinking that if you walked out there on that ice, it would break, all right, but probably dump you into the drink! Wouldn't want that to happen!
You got that right, Janet! ... Nope, I have had no intention of stepping on that ice! ::)
Wonderful picture, Jane. You wonder, don't you, why the birds stay when it freezes over.
Jeanne, I've been told the birds (i.e. ducks) will go as far south as it is still comfortable for them. When it gets too cold, they will move on. The swans are residents here. This is the first time this lake has had ice. We are experiencing "unusual" cold for this part of Oregon.
See! I to;d you that you could do it!!!
I love the picture!
Thanks, Judy!
I used to do this kind of stuff all the time (ask Jeanne) but, somewhere along the way I've lost something ... For one thing, I lost interest in my webpage (was once quite extensive) and then lost interest in other things to do with the internet. Don't really have much of an excuse .... maybe that "o" word? :-\
No more likely the stress word.
possibly ...
Nice photo Jane. Its even more wonderful that you could enjoy it within the warmth of your home...That's pretty much how i view it here in winter, hahaha. Though I will eventually go out...You do have my curiousity going-what lake is it...I think i'll take a guess, Empire Lakes??? As a teen we lived on Washington St., on the southern edge of Coos Bay, you can get to Chareleston if you go past that street...It use to be all woods...I forget what that area was called, its been so long ago...
Do you still have your webpage? I would love to visit it...
Juanita
Jane, I think our interest fluctuates from time to time. And I'm glad your interest in taking and posting pictures seems to be coming back towards the top, especially here... maybe on S&F too? :D
Juanita, I live in Shore Pines ... there are three "lakes" here, and this one is the largest and up on the hill in the back of the park. I just happen to have a deck out onto the edge of it (right in my yard). I know where Washington St is ... I have a very good friend who lives on California St ...
I also know where Empire Lakes are ... And, no, I don't have my webpage any more. :-[
Jeanne, I don't even have a camera any more ... My neighbor took this picture for me. ;) I think, when my daughter died, I just stopped caring about much of anything.
I used to take pictures all the time, and share them with my mother, because she loved to know all about what and where we were. After Mom died, I told my sister "I don't have anyone to take pictures for any more ..." I think that same feeling returned after Jean died. Maybe, some day, I'll pick up a little more energy and "do something" with my life again. :-\
Jane, maybe that wonderful son-in-law who repaired your bathroom floor will take a hint and get you a nice little digital for Christmas. :D
'Twould be nice :D
Jane I can relate.
It must be pretty chilly in there, glad it's the ducks not me. :)
