Title: The Jade Tower
Post by: Summicron on June 26, 2009, 07:03:02 PM
I said I'd put in a picture of this jade coloured building in town center, I think its a lift shaft in the new model lodging house. Now I've got a digital camera, I use it mainly as a notebook to show you some of the locality that I don't want to commit to film, yet are aspects of the town worth showing and sharing, the sun is only on this side of the building till about 11am. Model lodging houses were common throughout England at one time, housing migrant workers, then after the war, down and out's. Believe it or not some of them were millionair's who'd had breakdowns or just lost it in society, and took to the road. Many were skilled tradesmen who again had lost the will to fit in with society. Apparently there are only two model lodging houses left in the country, one here in Darwen, the other I think in Preston. This is a new building, the previous one is still standing as yet up near the health center.

Margery's brother Raymond, lived in the old lodging house for a time, he served on HMS Rodney during the war, was at the battle of the Bismark, and had an accident, ended up living rough, as it effected his mental capacity.

The thing is, long before I came to know the Lord, there was a Pentecostal church in Darwen, long since demolished, and this is in Margery's testimony I published, that many of the inmates of that lodging house used to go to that church, they may or may not have made any visible commitment to Christ, but, many of them being skilled tradesmen used to do a lot of work around that church. even to narrowing window frames an decorating. Just another small monograph from where we live.

I enjoy the history of your town that you give us.

That is quite the tower.  If you weren't awake before looking at it you sure would be after!!

Like I say Scotty, they make good notebooks, but it would never win me over from film, there is just something about using film cameras that have that feeling about them that is just right, and there is an edge of sharpness that digital just doesn't have.
