Title: Swan and Royal Hotel Clitheroe
Post by: Summicron on May 15, 2009, 05:02:29 PM
Not much to show you tonight, but on coming out of the hospital today was a small bus, so I asked the driver where he was going, "Clitheroe," he replied, so I got on board and went, had a mooch round, bought some sausages from the famous Cowmans sausage shop, there's about fifty varieties of sausage on display, then sauntered off down the street to browse one or two charity shops, before I did, I decided to photograph this place, The Swan and Royal Hotel, in Clitheroe. Yes its supposed to be haunted, another good reason ghosts don't haunt graveyards, Scotty, when they can just nip down to their cosy local. However, this pub does have its claim to fame, because, the engineer, Frank Whittle (Designer of the British jet engine) was billeted here during the war, also Winston Churchill, used to come and stay there, to see how Whittle was getting along with the design of this new jet engine. So I have included this pic out of local historical interest.
Taken on a dull and wet afternoon.

I love the history you put into your notes.  This is amazing.

Well done and well taken.

Frank Whittle is claimed to be the inventor of the jet engine, but then who were the people who designed the jet engines in Germany, the USA, and Russia, they all came by the theory independantly.

I was wondering about that.  Still I do enjoy the history and your pictures.

Very interesting, Summicron - both the photo and the history that goes with it.
