Title: A Trip to the Dental College
Post by: Pat on January 16, 2004, 09:03:59 PM

A TRIP TO THE DENTAL COLLEGE

Yesterday, I took a few photos at the Dental College and I thought I'd share them with you.

This is the sign at the entrance way showing where you must go for specific treatments.

As you leave your car, you must walk over this bridge and then you go down a long flight of stairs (or an elevator) to the waiting room area of the clinic.

All of the buildings in this photo are the medical areas of the University of Western Ontario with the main University Hospital in the background to the left.  This is where I took Jack to the stroke clinic during his time of being treated for his strokes.

When you go in and report to the receptionist, you sit and wait for your student dentist to come and greet you.  As I waited for Jawad to come and get me yesterday, I took this photo looking into the clinic.  The green dividers separate all of the cubicles and I've been told that in this room there are approximately 125 of these cubicles.  You can't see the patients but only the students if they are standing up.

The photo above is sort of to the left and now looking to the right you can see more and more cubicles.  The one that I was in yesterday was around the corner to the right behind that wall.

On the far back wall is the huge dispensory for the main clinic where the students get their supplies needed for the treatment. This area is only for fillings and bridges and partial and full plates.  If teeth are required to be pulled or any surgery is needed, you go through that door with the exit sign and there's an even larger area where all surgery is done.

One of the reasons why the treatments take so long is that every step must be checked by the professor.  The prof that is working with Jawad is a Dr. Saab and here he is seen checking out another patient and a student's work.

Students working with a specific professor must line up to get him to come and check out things and here Dr. Saab is seen with the white coat on while some students wait for him!

This just gives an idea of how far away from our cubicle the professor is and sometimes it's humourous to see him walking along from cubicle to cubicle with this line of students following--like a mother goose and her goslings

And see that orange flag?  That's to show where the emergency equipment is located if needed in a hurry.

Here is my super guy!

This is Jawad who hails from Damascas, Syria and was a practicing dentist over there but must do the last two years of his training in a Canadian university before he can call himself "Dr." in Canada.

A closeup of Jawad.

He's a wonderful fellow and besides being a terrific dentist, he's also a new father to a wee little girl called Naya.

After my long day yesterday getting impressions done for my lower bridge and getting the feel of what it might be like to have my upper partial in place in the not too distant future, I left Jawad to head home to Guelph.

But first I had to go up the long flight of stairs and then walk across that bridge and head to my car where Geordie was waiting patiently for me.

Then we'd head home and we'd hold hands the whole way and I'd tell him about my day in the Dental College!

Pat

Oh gosh "Jaw..ad" what a name for a dentist!  I bet he gets teased about it.  ;)

Chris sends his love but says "no thank-you". He has had long, long painful experiences of dentists since a small boy....overcrowded mouth, jaw alignment, braces, headgear and then some.Recently he had a bad fall on the bus. That resulted in more painful treatment and very expensive bridge work. He says he knows how you feel. Sorry I can't get him near these pictures., though he is popping in later with some of his own for a different thread.

Thanks you, Pat, for the pictures and the wonderful narration.  Now you may feel our presence when you return to London for more dental work.  We know where you are and how to get there now!

I can 'see' you holding hands with Geordie!   ;)

That is certainly not a dentist's office the way I think of one.  With every step being supervised though you know you are receiving good care!  Thanks for sharing this.

Something odd about toothache.  And teeth.

If you have toothache all of a sudden your whole life is filled with photos of dentisits and teeth.  Dropped in the shop today and the poor woman was holding her jaw.  Yes it was the dreaded!!

It was a nice look at the school of dentistry in Canada.  My snow always turns out blue Pat whats the secret??

Oh, dear, Alan, I don't know.  I'm sure that snow isn't really white as it probably is reflecting all of the light around it.  I know that I've had blue snow at times too.

Hey, Alan!  It's great to see you here.  Come back often, you hear?  We need to see that garden take shape too.

Wow!  What a trip and I worried about you falling in the snow going to the building.  (because I cannot walk in the snow myself).  Thanks for taking us along.  I got up and turned on the gas logs when I saw how cold it was.

So glad you had Geordie with you for company.

I think Alan is using [tongue in cheek] with his:

"If you have toothache all of a sudden your whole life is filled with photos of dentisits and teeth." ;)

Pat..........

I shudder at the word "dentist".  I Have 'em checked every six months.  I don't envy your having to go there, regardless of how nice they are.
