Two Pendelino units, courtesy of Richard Branson's Virgin brands, these are his latest entrepreneurial pursuits, the updating and running of the west coast main line. These two units were spotted on Preston station.
What exactly are "Pendelino units"? I love the contrasting colours though, interesting shot.
Italian built trains, they use an idea they tried in the 1960s tilting trains, the tilted on corners to keep up their speed, they didn't work back then, but thanks to modern technology they are very successful. The east coast main line is fairly straight, and normal high speed trains can run on them. But the west coast main line is far more curved and cornered, so special trains were developed to run on them, there are both electric units, and diesel units, that even serve branch line occasionally.
I was watching Discovery Chanel on the TV this weekend. They were showing how they were replacing the main train line from London to Scotland a piece at a time and all the work was being done on weekends with the line shut down. It was interesting to watch.
Technology is great in much of the world, the problem I have with it is that life is going faster and faster, we no longer have the slow lazy days of summer. everything has to be rushed. We no longer take time to smell the roses.
OK I will get off the soap box LOL.
I do so enjoy your photos, You have a keen interesting eye!
