I took a few pics of the sun a while ago, and I wondered what it would look like if I cranked up the shutter speed A LOT. The first pic is unmodified, and the second has a heavily modified white balance.

Once you take away the color temperature it looks so much more like the moon. I wonder what happens if I give it more temp. ??? I'll be right back.
The sun? wow-how did you managed to shoot at it without it bothering your sight? You know you are on the right track, experimenting as to what you can do. Pretty much how I learned...Though I may not be able to describe what I did here or there when I shoot but I can turn that dial this way or that and get close to the results I want. Have to thank the cameras for holding out for me for the learning process, by the time I'm done learning it will be time to get a new one, hahaha!!! :) :D
