Saved my pennies, well, yen, actually, for a long time and was able to finally get a nice telephoto lens. I got the Canon EF 400 F5.6. It lets me "reach out and touch" the birds, in a sense. :D

Wow what an awesome capture Kevin.
For sure, Marilyn! This is yen well spent, Kevin!
Wow, that's really getting in close!
I hope you get a lot of great pics with your new lens.
I'd like to get one of those 600mm lenses. But then your're getting into the four digit range $,$$$! And me without a job, it's not going to happen anytime soon.
Just seeing that many dollar signs makes my head spin!
 :dizzy: :ambu:
Hey Kevin shot looks great, the new equipment will bless you greatly as well as the people who get to see the end results....
I myself am thinking of purchasing a Sony cybershot dsc-10, I have read a little about it and like some of the features, if anyone has a better suggestion for a camera in the price range of $300-$00 let me know... I am looking for my control over exposures as well as filter application that can be done in the lens instead of photoshop!

LarryBoy,
What would the top end of your budget be?
kevin
$500 max.....
Obviously a great lens. But a great lens is nothing unless you know how to use it.
And you obviously do. Nice work.
I could have used a nice long lense today at work.
I saw a red tailed hawk in the grass about 100 feet away from my patrol car. He was dining on freshly caught rabbit. I just sat in my car and watched him having dinner on the lawn.
very nice DOF on that shot, dude.
That's a really nice shot! Did you have to crop any?
Great shot! As Jane said, your yen was well spent. :)
You sure shoot like a Marine. This is another bull's eye!
Just want to share this photo which I shot with my inexpensive point-and-shoot Canon SX10 at its full zoom,
equivalent to 560mm. Not bad for a $320.00 (Can) camera. I love this camera. I love it so much, I wrote an article about it. [attachimg=#]
You may read about it on my blog: http://artisticampresents.blogspot.com/2009/07/love-my-camera.html (http://artisticampresents.blogspot.com/2009/07/love-my-camera.html)
When you can get a great shot like that, it's no wonder you love that camera!
Barbarian you are so right. There are some amazing photographers on this site who know HOW to use their lenses.
This is a beautiful picture, what kind of bird is it? It looks like the size of a sparrow, is that right?

I cropped it a tiny bit, to get rid of some background junk.

$500 max.....
Canon produces some inexpensive, but fairly good lenses, in that price range. I bet Nikon does, too. ;)
Thanks Everyone, for the comments. I've been busy, and I wasn't able to respond right away.
I'd like to suggest you look at the Nikon D40. Best Buy has it for right around $500 and buy.com about $50 less than that. Might be worth checking out ebay or another reliable site for a used one in good condition.
It's a great base camera for the price. And when you save your pennies (or Yen) you can add the lens you love. I have a Nikon camera but actually bought a Tamron 70-300mm for $150ish and I've been very pleased with the sharpness for the price.
