Title: Am i a fundamentalist?
Post by: outbackjack on June 01, 2007, 09:15:49 AM
I recently got an email that was a reply to a link website request. They said among other things that my site was obviously fundamentalist with KJV issues. Now I don't know where they get the KKV things from as in my essays from Bible college days I used NIV and Greek Interlinear. As for being fundamentalist well I don't know what they really mean. I don't see myself as a fanatic, even though I am serious about following Jesus. Can you take a look at my website and tell me honestly if it comes across as being fundamentalist and why it does?

Hi Tracy...

I'm not one to give names to certain beliefs as some folks have different ideas as to the definitions.

But if we are following Jesus and His teachings and not willing to compromise in any way, we are what some call "fundamentalists".  But I would rather call myself a Believer of the Lord Jesus Christ and a follower of Him and His teachings.

A lot of people misuse the term fundamentalist, linking it with extremist ideas and/or behaviors.

That's not quite the case.

The true definition of a Christian fundamentalist is someone who believes in the fundamentals of Christianity.

Those fundamentals include the bible as the true word of God, the belief in one God, that Jesus Christ was the son of God, that he was born of a virgin, died for our sins, rose again, and is coming back.

Which translation of the bible, what you wear, your diet, or your musical tastes are not part of the fundamentals.

There was a set of books published called "The Fundamentals" that outline them, and then describe them in detail.

They have been in the process of being put online for a while now so they may be read. (I even helped proofread and format a bit!) Other than that, they're relatively cheap to buy in paperback, or if you live near a seminary as I used to, you can check them out of their library.

Here's the online link: http://www.xmission.com/~fidelis/

Fundamentalism has received a bad name because of a few things.

1. Ignorance over what it means to a fundamentalist.

2. People who lump all fundamentalists in with Christians. For example, a Muslim fundamentalist does not believe the same thing as a Christian fundamentalist. The LDS fundamentals differ from the classic Christian fundamentals. Etc..

3.  People associate extremists, who usually do believe in the fundamentals but carry them to extreme viewpoints, with plain old fundamentalism. That makes as much sense as calling a socialist a communist. Both may look similar, they sound similar on the outside, but the methods, the reasoning, and the results are vastly different.

Thank you for that.  I have bookmarked the link and will have a good read there later.

So nice to see you on the site as well.

(Actually, that's an old photo.  I must change it.  My hair is shorter as it's easier for me to care for.)

I've just been busy! Not sure where I left off, but I've been going to college full time, along with being a mommy!

Anna's doing excellent right now.  I'm just making everyone leave her alone. She's been doing great, and has had about two months straight now with absolutely no problems at all.  It's the best I've ever seen her. Her father is trying to convince me to let him take her to China to have open heart surgery, but I've said no and I'm sticking to that. She had a heart cath a few months ago, and that all worked out ok.

She's happy, she's doing everything normal kids do, she hasn't had any episodes of passing out or anymore seizures, and she hasn't been choking.

So I'll fight people off with sticks if I gotta. LOL The kid is doing fine! I'm a bit on edge wondering if this is the calm before the storm, but maybe she's just ok now! If this is the calm, we'll just enjoy it while we can.

Thanks for remembering her and for asking.  :)
