I don't know the answer, either, but it's a great picture of whatever it is.   :D

A snail has a house to go into and a slug doesn't.  That is the simple explanation.   My internet is working at 16.8 so I have to wait to see the picture!

That looks like a shell .......Snail i think

A Beauty though!

It appears you've caught a snail in the process of growing himself a larger shell.
Great capture at any rate.

This has really sparked my curiosity. I'd love to post this on another site for identification. The impressions
are very curious looking as well. You did very well at capturing this one.

QuoteIt appears you've caught a snail in the process of growing himself a larger shell.

Mollusks can only do that by making the shell longer.  Can't shed and start a new one.  The "shell" on this one is actually the mantle, not a shell.  Some slugs have greatly reduced shells or internal shells, but this one seems to have neither.  So it's a slug.
Slugs aren't actually a taxonomic group.  Different groups of snails include species that have lost their shells; a slug is basically a snail that has genetically changed to no longer have a coiled shell.

Jimiam, feel free to post it for identification, but please report back with a link if you find out anything. Barbarian, I'd never heard of a slug mantle. I've learned something.

Thanks, all, for the comments.

Oh, and Barbarian, that's one scary cool avatar.  :)

Great info Barbarian. No need for additional id on this one, you've solved the issue.

QuoteOh, and Barbarian, that's one scary cool avatar.

It's the one I use on most other boards.    Some time ago, I was on a board with more aggressive people.  One atheist was offended by my faith (most of them weren't but you know there's always one) and told me I just didn't understand how "barbaric" Christianity is.

I replied. "So call me the Barbarian."    Everyone else thought it was funny, and started calling me that.   So there it is.   I found a suitably barbaric avatar and made a few changes.  I put it up here because I got an avatar for Mrs. B and I figured I should have a cartoon avatar, too.
