For several years now we have been overrun with grasshoppers in the summer time, often they are so numerous that they totally wipe out gardens and pastures. Because of the damage they cause, these insects are often cursed, or at least mildly hated, however when you take a closer look, it is difficult to not be in awe of how God assembled them. You may not think they are beautiful, or majestic, but it is hard not to be impressed by their construction!

They're kinda' like mini wood chippers aren't they? We have problems with earwigs here. They eat some of our plants down to the dirt.
I was driving through Saskatchewan in 2003 coming home to Ontario from Calgary, Alberta and the grasshoppers I think, were in epidemic proportions that summer. We had them on the car windscreen and just everywhere. I got a photo of one on the window looking in at me. I'll have to try to find it. ;)
This is really a wonderful photo, Ken. I do like macro and close-up photography.
Looking at the photo once again, is that a wee drop of water under the pipe (is that a fence?) that it is sitting on?
Marvelous creation...terrible nuisance.
Good picture though, perhaps some science textbook publishers would like it!.

It might be his right, front foot. I'm not sure though.
Nice shot! I enjoyed reading your description too. :)
Yes ScottyBoy, they have voracious appetites. I am amazed by the amount of "wood" they chew through. I have lived in areas with a lot of earwigs also, and given the choice, I'd prefer to have neither!
Pat, ScottyBoy is correct, that is one of his claws wrapping around the underside of the wire on the fence panel he is sitting on.
Judy, if you can help me find someone who wants to publish this image, I will throw in a million more (of the real thing), just to sweeten the deal!!!
Thanks to all for taking a look...
Great photo, even though it gives me the willies. :D
PHENOMENAL macro!
