Interesting bug.  I lookes it up and Yes I have mistaken it for a stinging bug. 

I like the background, the multiple shades of green, then the sharp contrast of the syrphid.

Turns out I'm wrong.   He looks very much like a Syrphid fly, but he's a much rarer soldier fly, apparently mimicking a syrphid, which is mimicking a wasp.
