Apparently, Italian Swiss. On the back "Catherina Kaslatter" and "Mani Proprie", which I think means "signed with her own hand."

I guess this must have been Mrs. Barbarian's Grandmother's.
What a treasure you have there, and a family heirloom! It is beautiful.

Very nice carving Barbarian. I'm no scholar but the latin for "signed by my own hand" I think would be
manu rather than mani. This could well mean made by/with my own hand/hands in italian. I'd bet she carved and stained it herself, or did you indicate that already? What a wonderful family treasure! A good photo too. :)
Hey B. is the block her name is on a separate piece of wood glued to the rest or does it seem to be all one solid piece of wood? It looks almost like multiple pieces, but hard to tell with the photo.
It's one block. I really like they way she used the natural color of the wood for skin tones.
