Mrs. Barbarian started planted a Hibiscus last summer. It was supposed to be winter hardy in North Texas, but didn't do well in the winter. This spring it was nothing but a dry stick above ground. She almost pulled it up.
Good thing she didn't. It grew about 5 feet tall, and is popping many huge blossoms, now.

That's beautiful! Lesson learned - don't pull up dry sticks until you see what develops! :D
