What are those little orange flowers? They are beautiful. I've never seen those before.
The name we have always called them is Indian's Paintbrush. If that is wrong......then I don't know.

I see the connection. I wonder if settlers didn't just give that name to whatever bright colored flower was in that area.

Yep. Several different flowers, including yours, have been so called.
