Morning Devotional...

The True Hero of the Titanic

John Harper was born to a pair of solid Christian parents on May 29th, 1872. It was on the last Sunday of March 1886, when he was thirteen years old that he received Jesus as the Lord of his life. He never knew what it was to "sow his wild oats." He began to preach about four years later at the ripe old age of 17 years by going down to the streets of his village and pouring out his soul in earnest entreaty for men to be reconciled to God.

As John Harper's life unfolded, one thing was apparent...he was consumed by the word of God. When asked by various ministers what his doctrine consisted of, he was known to reply "The Word of God!" After five or six years of toiling on street corners preaching the gospel and working in the mill during the day, Harper was taken in by Rev. E. A. Carter of Baptist Pioneer Mission in London, England. This set Harper free to devote his whole time of energy to the work so dear to his heart. Soon, John Harper started his own church in September of 1896. (Now known as the Harper Memorial Church). This church which John Harper had started with just 25 members, had grown to over 500 members when he left 13 years later. During this time he had gotten married, but was shortly there after widowed. However brief the marriage, God did bless John Harper with a beautiful little girl named Nana.

Ironically, John Harper almost drowned several times during his life. When he was two and a half years of age, he almost drowned when he fell into a well but was resuscitated by his mother. At the age of twenty-six, he was swept out to sea by a reverse current and barely survived, and at thirty-two he faced death on a leaking ship in the Mediterranean. Perhaps, God used these experiences to prepare this servant for what he faced next.......

It was the night of April 14, 1912. The RMS Titanic sailed swiftly on the bitterly cold ocean waters heading unknowingly into the pages of history. On board this luxurious ocean liner were many rich and famous people. At the time of the ship's launch, it was the world's largest man-made moveable object. At 11:40 p.m. on that fateful night, an iceberg scraped the ship's starboard side, showering the decks with ice and ripping open six watertight compartments. The sea poured in.

On board the ship that night was John Harper and his much-beloved six-year-old daughter Nana. According to documented reports, as soon as it was apparent that the ship was going to sink, John Harper immediately took his daughter to a lifeboat. It is reasonable to assume that this widowed preacher could have easily gotten on board this boat to safety; however, it never seems to have crossed his mind. He bent down and kissed his precious little girl; looking into her eyes he told her that she would see him again someday. The flares going off in the dark sky above reflected the tears on his face as he turned and headed towards the crowd of desperate humanity on the sinking ocean liner. As the rear of the huge ship began to lurch upwards, it was reported that Harper was seen making his way up the deck yelling "Women, children and unsaved into the lifeboats!" It was only minutes later that the Titanic began to rumble deep within. Most people thought it was an explosion; actually the gargantuan ship was literally breaking in half. At this point, many people jumped off the decks and into the icy, dark waters below. John Harper was one of these people.

That night 1528 people went into the frigid waters. John Harper was seen swimming frantically to people in the water leading them to Jesus before the hypothermia became fatal. Mr. Harper swam up to one young man who had climbed up on a piece of debris. Rev. Harper asked him between breaths, "Are you saved?" The young man replied that he was not.

Harper then tried to lead him to Christ only to have the young man who was near shock, reply no. John Harper then took off his life jacket and threw it to the man and said "Here then, you need this more than I do..." and swam away to other people. A few minutes later Harper swam back to the young man and succeeded in leading him to salvation. Of the 1528 people that went into the water that night, six were rescued by the lifeboats. One of them was this young man on the debris. Four years later, at a survivors meeting, this young man stood up and in tears recounted how John Harper had led him to Christ. Mr. Harper had tried to swim back to help other people, yet because of the intense cold, had grown too weak to swim. His last words before going under in the frigid waters were "Believe on the Name of the Lord Jesus and you will be saved." Does Hollywood remember this man? No. Oh well, no matter. This servant of God did what he had to do. While other people were trying to buy their way onto the lifeboats and selfishly trying to save their own lives, John Harper gave up his life so that others could be saved.

"Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends..." John Harper was truly the hero of the Titanic!

Janet we are only friends. Yes we spent time together this weekend doing a few things. It was fun and nice, But we are only friends. I understand how everyone here is so concerned after the fiasco with Michael. All I really want is a friend to do things with, pray with go to church with.

Marilyn, it is nice to have a friend to share things with.  At least, this guy is near enough to visit you, and hasn't started off by telling you tall tales.  Good luck!

Since this new 'Thought' is posted, I will post for the 31st.  And Janet, I got your message and you did fine.  I clicked on the last 'Thought' and it brought me here so you under-estimated yourself...you did fine.

Marilyn ~ You are making me think I ought to call my single cousin and see if he would like to go out to eat and such.  I miss male companionship!

Well, I went to sleep watching TV this afternoon and the phone rang.  I figured it was Kitty wondering where I was but it was Ivalou.  And it was before 5pm.  But she is telling me that she is going to her daughter, Jo's, leaving tomorrow after putting out the trash and not coming back home until next Sunday.  I know I am a big girl but I just feel all alone when I know Barb, Kaye Don and Ivalou are gone!!  I am not scared...just feel alone.

So then Kitty called and said she was home.  So I left for her house.  I was mainly to help her save her Favorites and Address Book to My Documents so when they bring the new desktop and transfer My Documents from the old to the new desktop, she can then import them back to Firefox and the Address book.  And I tell you, she needs to be more organized.  I don't know how she finds anything on her computer.  I went to My Computer>>C: and she had pictures and word documents in there!!!  Whew!  I moved them to My Documents on the laptop and told her to do the desktop before going to bed tonight.

Then she insisted I stay to eat.  I ate a salad and fresh strawberries...that's all.  Didn't go there to eat!

Now it is TV time and Extreme Makeover--Home Edition.  Love that feel good show!  I have had a slight headache for two days and I never have a headache.  May be still getting used to new glasses.

Good Morning everyone: I sure felt sluggish this morning at my Curves workout. I should not have eaten 4 pieces of Chicken Garlic pizza yesterday. Oh but it was sure good.

I slept  like a baby last night. Went to bed at 8pm and didn't wake up at all until 4:53 this morning. Keith called at 10:30 but I  didn't hear the phone until it was too late, the answering machine was already shutting off.

It was 28° went I left to go to Curves at 5:40am  Brrrrrrrr. Where did spring go. The blooming trees are  giving me a hard time with allergy, so I didn't even walk my dogs yesterday, it was too cold and windy blowing pollen around. I sure have a scratchy voice this morning too. I don't know if it is the pollen or the mold in the church building that caused it.

OK I am done with my rambling

Happy Monday all!

Just breezing in to say hello.  Take care and have a good week!

Etta Sue

Ivalou just called me.  She is in Ohio.  She said she put out her trash..I saw that...and she put letters in the box to mail.  I am to get her mail and the morning paper for her.  But when I looked out my picture window, the flag on the mailbox was NOT up.  So I called her back to make sure she said she put mail to be mailed today.  Yes she did.  I called before going out because it is raining.  But I went out to the mailbox and sure enough, she had some letters in there.  So I put the flag up so the mailman would pick up her mail.  Ivalou said, she thought she put the flag up....never before in her life has she not!!  Well, this time she didn't.   ^-^

I am getting anxious for Kitty.  She should have the Geek Squad at her home now installing her new computer!!

Larry Hanna

Hi everyone.  This is housekeeper and lawn man day.  The lawn people have been here and gone and the housekeeper is working away.  This morning, after coffee, three friends and I went and spent a few minutes with our friend who has final stage liver cancer.  He was sitting in his easychair and looked better than he had the last time I saw him.  He said he wasn't in too much pain but isn't able to eat anything solid and hasn't for about 5 weeks.  He has lost a lot of weight and tires very easily.  We stayed no more than 10 minutes as know it is tiring to have people around when you don't feel good.  He said lots of people had called him and quite a few had stopped in to see him.  I have had coffee 6 days a week with this man for the last 12 years.

We had a great time yesterday.  Our two grandchildren were here with their spouses and the 4 great grandchildren, one of whom is only a few weeks old and is so tiny.  They all were here for about 3 hours.  As soon as they left we headed back to the church for the wedding reception for our choir director and her new husband and then took our daughter home.  We were both exhausted and were ready for bed by 9 pm.  Fortunately we are feeling refreshed this morning although I passed on the walking for today.  I am finishing my lunch and will rest awhile this afternoon.

Janet, I fear that you are being taken advantage of and I do hope you will stand up to them as they will respect you for it even if they don't like it.

Etta Sue, hope you don't get too lonely.  I know what you are talking about with the mess of files on people's computers.  For some reason understanding file management seems to be very difficult for some folks.  It is one of the hardest tasks we have at the Computer Learning Center.

Marilyn, glad you had a nice weekend.

Good devotional, Janet.  I have heard/read that story before but it sure doesn't hurt to hear it again ... very inspiring.
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass .... it's about learning to dance in the rain!

Janet

Larry, you are right in that I'm going to have to be tougher with the people I work with/for.  They gave one of the 17 year old girls a raise and put her in charge of the scheduling, and that wasn't a great idea.  Every time I go in, she has changed the schedule.  I told her I am not going to work 4, 5 or 6 days in a row.  It's too much, and I'm starting to have problems because of it.  Feet/ankles/legs swelling and painful.  It's not worth risking my health, even though I enjoy the job most days.

I stopped by the funeral home this afternoon, and it is just too sad for words, to see four caskets containing beautiful 15 and 16 year old girls; with mementos all around, other kids sitting in the pews crying, community members milling about looking so distraught.  I just hope the whole high school now understands that when you're in a car, you must be alert and not distract the driver.  I heard today that the girl who was driving--that day was her mother's birthday, and they had gone to take flowers to her, and were hurrying to get back to school.  She is out of the hospital now and back home with her family.  I can't imagine how hard this is for her.

Well, Vytorin and Zetia are off the list now, huh?  My cholesterol is now 328, but no way will I take any of those statin drugs!  I would wind up bedfast if I did.

Our Sunday School teacher read us that account of John Harper and I enjoyed it so much, so went and looked it up to use here.  I had not heard it before, but what a hero of the faith he was!  Now I would like to know what happened to his little daughter.

Hi, there, I read the beginnings of this week's postings yesterday and really enjoyed the devotional, Janet. I realized, though, that the conversation was just getting set up, so waited to post until I was certain it was "ok."

I've had lots and lots of things to do lately, so it seems I'm getting on the computer later and later in the evenings.

Wonder if it will cycle around til I am saying "good morning" before rushing out to go to work again! ::)

Y'all have a good rest of the day!

APRIL FOOL
that image won't load

Enough of that!!  Remember pulling April Fool in grade school?  That was fun...depending on what side of the April Fool you were on, right?

Larry ~ When I was on Kitty's laptop, I clicked on My Computer>>C: and she had pictures and Word documents in there!  I told her that's a no-no!  Always look to see where you are saving something and always make sure it is in, at least, My Documents if you don't have a folder that it fits in IN My Documents!

Not sure what today will be...I know I don't want to be on this computer as much as I was yesterday.  Don't want to have a hurting neck again.  But I am mighty hungry for a hamburger...yes, a hamburger!!  So I will probably go somewhere for lunch or late lunch.

It is cloudy, and rainy here in Indiana.  Only 39°F!  And windy!  Rain all night and I am surrounded by ponds again today.  How am I going to get my new glasses to transition without sunshine?  Hopefully some day.  SOOON!!

Everyone must be busy this morning, as not many posts yet.  We took the Mercury out to the shop to have some maintenance done on it.  It is getting pretty old, but still runs good and gets better mileage than the PT Cruiser.

Last night was a combined Memorial Service for the four girls killed last Thursday.  There were probably 3000 people at the Civic Center for that, in this community of less than 7000 people.  We didn't attend, but did drive past, as we heard that there were to be protesters there from that so-called Baptist church in Wichita.  Those are the people who go and picket Veterans' funerals, carrying signs with such ugly things on them.  When I asked why in the world they would come here to picket this, I was told they said "God hated those girls, that's why he killed them."  :idiot: :clobber: :uglystupid: and :ticked:.  Well, there were six protesters who came, and probably 150 of the wonderful Patriot Guard who drive their motorcycles to protect the people from the protesters.  Also, every police and patrol car available was there, the men standing beside the cars with rifles!  Never in my life could I have imagined such things happening in this peaceful little town.  What a fallen, mixed-up world we live in today.

The first of the four funerals is today.  The mother is a pharmacist at our local drug store, and when we stopped to get Darrel's pills, the drugstore was closed, for the service.  Should have anticipated that, as this community is very supportive.  The cousins will have a double funeral tomorrow, then the last funeral is Thursday.  Please continue to pray, especially for the poor girl who was driving and lived.  Can you imagine what she is suffering?

Sorry for all of that, as you can tell, it's really on my mind.  :(

Ruth Ann, sorry I missed your call the other day.  Do call again, please.

Have a great, God-blessed day!

Oh, my goodness.  Janet, that's so awful.  I can't understand anyone reasoning like that.  It's just evil.

I can't believe so few people have been here.  Is it an April Fool's joke?  Am I in the wrong room?  Wrong site?  Wrong planet.  Are you all hiding from me and going to pop out and shout "April Fool". lol

My daughter just came in so I'll hush and visit a minute.  Nita

Larry Hanna

Hi everyone.  Janet, I can't imagine what guilt and turmoil the young girl that was driving must feel.  This is something that will impact her entire life as well as the lives of so many people.  I just fail to see how someone so mean spirited could be lead to believe they are doing a Christ-like thing to picket any funeral.   I can't even find words to express my indignation of such ignorant and misguided people and to think a pastor is leading them along such a path.

I had a busy morning as after coffee my friend and I went walking at the church gym and then I came home and moved some things around in my office to accommodate the fax machine, that I had had stored but my friend needed to use it last night, and also to get my new printer into a different wall outlet.  I need to do some more rearranging.  I then attended my Tuesday morning meeting and after lunch rested.  I have some paperwork to do this afternoon and then will take it easy this evening.

I think I mentioned continuing to have difficulties with my laptop.  I am seriously considering buying a new laptop.  MicroCenter has one on sale, a Lenovo for $380 and rather than spend more money on my existing laptop and still have an old computer I am going to check into it towards the end of the week.

Etta Sue, it sounds like you spent a little too long working on your computer.  I hope the restore didn't undo a lot of what you had worked on.

Janet

Nita and Larry, thanks for your comments.  I do have some corrections to what I posted earlier:  First, there were 8 or 10 of the evil picketers here; second, there were over 200 of the Patriot Guard.  A friend handed me a "news release" sent out by the evil Westboro Baptist Church (Why don't all Baptists sue them to remove Baptist from their name?)  The news release reads as follows:

Thank God for four more dead Kansas high school students, killed March 27, when a semi hit their car.  They died for the sins of Kansas.

                           GOD HATES KANSAS.

Kansas--unholy, ungrateful Land of the Sodomite Persecutors of WBC (church), for preaching God's Word.

                           GOD SENT THE SEMI.

WBC WILL PICKET THEIR FUNERALS.

Yes, as always, we will picket in lawful, respectful proximity to their funerals, in full compliance with all laws, and in religious protest and warning; to wit:  "Be not deceived, God is not mocked."  Gal. 6:7.  God hates those who persecute His people.  Ergo, God hates Kansas, and is executing vengeance.  There is no fear of God before her eyes, and hence, Kansas is irreversibly doomed.

Also, this so-called 'church' is not in Wichita, it is in Topeka.  They even have a website to spew their evil, hate-filled venom.  :ticked:

It was explained to me that the picketers took their position across the street from the civic center, on the sidewalk.  The lady who owns the house there turned on her lawn sprinklers, which were getting them wet!   But the police made her turn them off..... >:(  The Patriot Guard guys were lined up on the opposite side of the street, with cycles idling; and every time the picketers raised their voices to spew their venom, the Guard revved their cycles and drowned them out!!  There was such wonderful support from this entire community for the families of the girls, and I was told that the service was very positive and uplifting and encouraging.  I'm so proud of my community.

Off my soapbox and now to work. :hello:

Janet, I have been in total and complete astonishment - speechless - since you first posted about this tragedy and the WBC.  Words fail me!  >:( I am glad for the wonderful support from the community, though.

I know that young survivor will need an awfully lot of help to ever heal from this.  And, will be constantly reminded every year on her mother's birthday, too.   :'(

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass .... it's about learning to dance in the rain!

Don't you just love the simple trust of little children?  I received this today and wanted to share with y'all:

The Stethoscope

A nurse in the pediatric ward, before listening to the little ones' chests, would plug the stethoscope into the children's ears and let them listen to their own hearts. Their eyes would always light up with awe. But she never got a response equal to four year old David's.

Gently he tucked the stethoscope in his ears and placed the disk over his heart. "Listen," she said, "what do you suppose that is?" He drew his eyebrows together in a puzzled line and looked up as if lost in the mystery of the strange tap-tap-tapping deep in his chest.. Then his face broke out in a wondrous grin. "Is that Jesus knocking?" he asked
.

Hi Everyone!

Wow, we're really experiencing high winds here.  Our hydro has been off a few times today and my internet was out as well.  It sounds as if my roof is going to blow off but I'm sure it won't.

Janet, that's terrible about the girls' funeral.  I've heard of this church before and it's just terrible.

Hi, there, friends,

Thank you for bringing me up to date on the news of the day. Janet, I grieve too for the entire town, and for the families involved in this terrible tragedy. At some point, those in that "church" who have strayed so far from the Light will get their comeuppance. Vengeance is Mine, saith the Lord.

Well, I've decided to retire, most likely in the middle of this summer. I don't know HOW it will feel to be able to sleep until my need for sleep is satisfied! Y'all please pray for Guidance for me as I make my way through the maze of decisions that lie ahead.

Love to all who visit this site.

I am sitting sort of sideways at the computer, having pushed the bookcase away from in front of it.  My place is in total mess mode.  Painters started and have not done much besides pushing everything out of place and doing the prime work....The daugher took off this morning because her son got ill at school, the father went to another job, crew is down the street at another job..... ::)  Keep telling myself (and cat, Misty) that next month this will all be just a bad memory.  She is petrified and doesn't believe a word...!

Thanks for a great devotional, Janet.  Makes me feel real good!  Also, thanks for the cute e-mails, Marilyn.  Glad that you have someone to spend time with.

That church is terrible and I can't imagine how people can think that way.  God will certainly deal with them in his own time.  Sad that so many are being led to believe lies.

Do any of you have an opinion about the Mayan Calendar ending in 2012?  Seems that a lot of people are thinking it means the end of the world....tho' the world we once knew has pretty much vanished.  As a Christian, I think it is only a matter of years until Jesus returns, but the unfortunate thing is, people seem almost eager for the end, and are not Christians...I think it is best to look for the signs in the Bible, not in other areas.   :)

Is anything made in our two countries any longer?  The 3 expensive sinks (North American Standard) all have to be pulled out and replaced.  Poor finish and paint coming off....They were made in Costa Rica!!  Why do companies think they make money having work done by other countries.  Recalls, after recalls!! :ticked:  I hope that your next President stops this, because our country followed that example and we are all in a muddle!  Goodness knows what this is going to do to the new countertops in the bathrooms.  As I mentioned before, this is definately not Heaven.

Janet, you work much too hard.  Stand firm!

I am going to watch the Barbara Walters special and learn how to live to be 150 yrs.  Not!  Can't imagine anything worse!

Won't get back to my computer for awhile, so hope everyone stays well and safe.  Sorry that you are still in pain, Pastor Al.  Will continue to pray.

Pleasant Day/Evening and God Bless.

Liz

Hello everyone, we got snow again yesterday. :excited: But it only lasted five minutes.  :-[ :snowman:
It was sunny today. I even mowed my neighbors  lawn today. I get big money for that! $15! of course, after I tithe there's $13.50. But hey, that works for me! :D

          Have a nice night.

Carol

Janet:  I do like your story about the hero on the Titanic.  Amazing.  Those troublemakers have been to funerals in our area too and I had a difficult time getting to my dentist & did he ever lose business when they came to picket the Planned Parenthood in the same block - the city had to put a police car there all of the daytime.  What twisted minds they have that they don't think about the grief and sadness and of the families.

Larry:  It sounds like your Sunday was a lovely and memorable day!

Scotty:  How nice that you consider tithing in all things.  Tithing and saving are going the way of the past.

Ruth Ann:  You are moving up your retirement date, at least I seem to remember you mentioned later this year.  You will adjust very quickly and be happy for it!

I have several things "To Do" and had better get going.

Al Moak

Liz - I guess the bottom line is the bottom line.  Return on investment is everything.  Paying foreign workers miniscule wages compared to the wages here impacts their bottom line, so they do it.  This is partly a result of our unionizing over the past 60 years or so - we've gotten wages way up, but it results in foreigners grabbing our jobs.  We will pay for our greed.  And our "minimum wage" keeps going up, too, so companies don't want to hire young people anymore, and those jobs go where there are no minimum wages.
