JennyW: Hello Everyone! Just checking in to see if anyone wants to get this group going again! Hope all is well where ever you live! 2024-08-14, 08:21:59

Oldiesmann: I'm not aware of any Jenny. Not sure why activity has died down on this site so much though 2023-06-12, 00:06:36

JennyW: Also, does anyone know other photo sharing sites that are Christian? 2023-05-16, 08:47:03

JennyW: Hello Everyone! I really miss activity on this site. I've been discouraged by photography sites where you have to sort through so much explicit content in order to see photos that truly glorify God. I'd love to see this site pick up again. 2023-05-16, 08:46:36

Janet: Carol, I am just reading this.  So sorry for your loss, glad your beloved Don knew the Lord and you have the assurance of his eternity  and that you WILL see him again.  Much love to you.  Janet 2022-06-18, 08:49:36

Larry:  I packed up all the leftovers (the sweets and other baking) and gave them away to neighbors.  This makes me happy to get it out of here and they are happy for an extra treat.

A classmate has been doing missionary work in Haiti and now goes to an orphanage outside the city, I don't know how far but a wall but all the babies & other children were fine.  They spent a whole day outdoors at first.  Some of the workers did not make it back from their own homes.  My classmate was not there right now - she adapted a teenager from Haiti a few years ago & there is just no word yet from anyone related to the girl.

We have grandson & dog - will work out going back & forth to their house - his parents are going to Hawaii.

Janet:  I did not remember you making a memory book for Beth.  That was such a "stop in your tracks" time for you and everyone.  It is amazing that Beth recovered & is so much better.  Prayers for her and you.

JudyB

Thank you for the reminder...I am getting my fire stirred up as well.

It has been an interesting evening.

RuthG where are you?  Haven't seen you post here lately, I am praying for Alan.

Have a great night everyone.  Love you all

Praying for the needs here.

Larry Hanna

Hi everyone.  Just a quick note this morning as I have several projects I want to get started on and it is already after 10 am.  We had coffee at the senior center and then 5 of us walked a mile or more at the gym.  I got along fine today and felt no chest pain.  We won't walk again until Monday.

I will be out of town tomorrow and until late Sunday afternoon.  I will have my iPod Touch with me but not my laptop.  If I post it will have to be fairly short as have to use an online keyboard-doable but not fast.

I have read all the messages since my last posting.  Anthony sure glad you didn't have black ice to contend with.  That was the problem around here last weekend, although not where I live.

It is hard to comprehend the devastation in Haiti.  I see this morning that pillaging has begun.  The task ahead down there is so large I don't even understand how they know where to start, other than trying to get food and water to the people.

Hope everyone has a fine day.

JudyB

Larry glad you didn't have chest pain.  I pray you have safe travels.

Anthony ~ Ivalou had a stroke Sept 23, 2009.  Her whole right side was affected/effected (never know which word to use) as well as her speech.  She has gone from wheelchair to walking on her own in less than three months.  She still has a hard time saying the words she wants to say but she is very understandable...and even laughs at herself since she knows what is coming out isn't what she wants to say!  She's a remarkable lady!

Joyce ~ I replied to your email.  Hope you got the animations now for your website.

The class luncheon was great yesterday although there were only 9 of us there.  I don't understand why more doesn't come to the lunches but it is their loss, not those who enjoy each others company when we go.

I noticed when I came home yesterday that the trash was still at Kaye Don's.  Still there this morning....ggrrr!  They have been as late as 6pm to pick it up but wouldn't you know, yesterday, they were there before 11:30am!!!  So I got my wooden cart and put the trash in Ivalou's garage for next week.

Also got Ivalou's schedule for out-patient speech and physical therapy.  She is so concerned that I will be taking her twice a week and using my time for it.  I tried to assure her that before this stroke, we were together 3-4 times a week going somewhere so don't think anything about using my time.  What else do I do?  She's my sister!!!

I have been doing laundry, making a new RX list for Ivalou, updating my Euchre hostess list and now I need to work on pictures for the class email and to upload at church.  Always something but that keeps my mind alert...or muddled...can't figure out which!!  :idiot:

Janet

It is hard to comprehend the devastation and human suffering in Haiti.  Several Americans were killed who went there to work in orphanages and do other missions work.  Hard to know what to say.........

Jane, glad you got your 'puter sorted out again.  They can be SO frustrating!!  >:(

We are going to see Blind Side tonight.  It has arrived in our little town!  :)

Tomorrow is my scrapbooking day.

I went by the funeral home for a visitation, a good friend of mine passed away.  She was in Florida with her youngest daughter; had open heart surgery and was doing fine, but then had a stroke and passed away.  They were showing a power point show of family photos there at the funeral home, looping constantly.  I thought that was nice.

I am reading a book to Beth, trying to go each day and read at least one chapter.  It is Joyce Meyer's new novel Any Minute, and it's really good.  She and another lady wrote it together.  Carol, thanks for the prayers for Beth.  She isn't doing any better as far as any voluntary movement, but is off nearly all her medications now, even the pain one.  So that's a good thing.  She can't do a single thing for herself, not even change the channel on the TV.  So it is hard, but she is keeping a good attitude in spite of everything.  I took a lot of photos in the hospital, and made that scrapbook of those.  I hope the next one I do for her will be a much happier one!

I feel and look like a new woman!!  Pat colored, cut and styled my hair, and oh, what a difference!!

Etta Sue, in case you wanted a tip, you use "affected" when you say she was affected by the stroke, and "effect" if you are saying what effect it had on her.  Clear as mud?  You just happened to hit on one of those little things that bugs me.  ???

See y'all later!

The TV news stations keep showing people who have found their loved ones alive and well.  And that's wonderful, of course, and usually reported as answered prayer.  But how about those who don't get that good news.  Those who will get word their loved one has died.  And those who will never know.   :'(

JAnet thank you for the explanation. affect/effect...I have been confused by that.

Our Prime Minister and his wife were the first ones into the Red Cross to donate.  The Canadian Government has earmarked 50 million and will match what the people donate dollar for dollar.  The military has sent 2 warships and 2 cargo aircraft as well as helos.  The cargo aircraft are dropping supplies and bringing the Canadians back home.   Don't know about you but I am impressed.

Was out to the Doctor with Kass.  We had a good Mom daughter day.  We took Heather to her physio therapy appointment.  She has been back to work and the 3 days has set her back big time with her back.  We had a good day.

While we have a heat wave going on Doug is going to do a tune up to the van.  Yes a heat wave it is 32*F. (Etta Sue I forget how to do the degree mark.)  That should help with fuel economy.

Well Got to go.  Praying here.

Are You Jesus?

A few years ago a group of salesmen went to a regional sales  convention in Chicago. They had assured their wives that they would be  home in plenty of time for Friday night's dinner.

Well, as such things go, one thing led to another. The sales manager went longer than anticipated and the meeting ran overtime. Their  flights were scheduled to leave out of Chicago's O'Hare Airport, and  they had to race pell mell to the airport. With tickets in hand, they  barged through the terminal to catch  their flight back home. In their rush, with tickets and brief-cases,one of  these salesmen inadvertently kicked over a table which held a display of baskets of apples. Apples flew everywhere.

Without stopping or looking back, they all managed to reach the plane in time for their nearly missed boarding. All but one. He paused, took  a deep breath,  got in touch with his feelings, and experienced a twinge of compassion for  the girl whose apple stand had been overturned.

He told his buddies to go on without him, waved goodbye, told one of  them to call his wife when they arrived at their home destination and  explain his taking a later flight. Then he returned to the terminal
where the apples were all  over the terminal floor. He was glad he did.

The 16 year old girl was totally blind! She was softly crying, tears  running down her cheeks in frustration, and at the same time helplessly groping for  her spilled produce as the crowd swirled about her, no one stopping,
and no one  to care for her plight.

The salesman knelt on the floor with her, gathered up the apples, put  them into the baskets, and helped set the display up once more. As he  did this, he noticed that many of them had become battered and bruised; these he set aside in  another basket. When he had finished, he pulled out his wallet and
said to the girl, "Here, please take this $20 for the damage we did. Are you okay?"

She nodded through her tears. He continued on with, "I hope we didn't
spoil  your day too badly."

As the salesman started to walk away, the bewildered blind girl called  out to him, "Mister...." He paused and turned to look back into those  blind eyes.

She continued, "Are you Jesus?"

He stopped in mid-stride, and he wondered. Then slowly he made his way  to catch the later flight with that question burning and bouncing  about in his  soul:

"Are you Jesus?"

Do people mistake you for Jesus? That's our destiny, is it not?

Janet ~ Thank you for the explanation of affect/effect.  Ivalou was affected by her stroke.  The stroke effected her right side with no touch sensations at all.  Is that right?  But I have a mindset that I will never get it right.  I need a little saying like 'I before E except after C'.

Don ~ I don't believe I have read that story.  A great reminder for us to be more Christlike in our daily lives.

JudyB ~ To make the °, you have to use calculator numbers.  Hold down the Alt key and then press 0176.

Alt + 0176 = °
Alt + 0188 = ¼
Alt + 0189 = ½
Alt + 0190 = ¾

On Vista if you go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Character Map you can select the font you are using at the top of the Character Map window and then select a character.  At the bottom right corner is the Alt + ???? that you would use for that character.  Try it.  You will get used to it!  Gô¿ôD Luck!

It is dark, gloomy, foggy here in Indiana.  The snow is melting and making the fields have the Dalmatian look.  Maybe the Palomino look!
And it is right at the freezing mark...32°!

Kitty mentioned maybe doing something today but she has been entertaining company for a few days AFTER doing her Memaw (I say MiiMaw as in Wii) duties in Ohio for a week.  I imagine she needs Mii time!  I agree!

Do you realize the 1/24th of 2010 is gone?

Etta Sue, I think it should be "The stroke affected her right side..." or "The stroke had an effect on her right side."  I think effect is noun and affect is a verb.  But of course, I could be way off base.  And the more I concentrate on it the more confused I get!

Etta Sue

Whew!  That last post of mine took me a half hour!  I still didn't get the 'list' right!  So if you see any mistakes, correct them yourself!  I am tired!  Whew!
            :roflBig:                                                                :roflBig:

Etta Sue

Jeanne ~ I think you are right.  One is a noun and one is a verb...now which is which? And to remember which is which.    :uglystupid:      :idiot:

Jeanne Lee

That's the problem, Etta Sue - remembering which is which.   :D  And I can't find any little trick to help with that.  I always need to sit and ponder, saying something both ways and then try again before I make a choice.  And then it's often the wrong one!   ;D

Affect

In order to understand the correct situation in which to use the word affect or effect, the first thing one must do is have a clear understanding of what each word means. According to yourDictionary.com, the word Affect means:

   1. To have an influence on or effect a change in: Inflation affects the buying power of the dollar.
   2. To act on the emotions of; touch or move.
   3. To attack or infect, as a disease: Rheumatic fever can affect the heart.

Effect

The word effect has a different meaning. Here is the meaning according to yourDictionary.com:

   1. Something brought about by a cause or agent; a result.
   2. The power to produce an outcome or achieve a result; influence: The drug had an immediate effect on the pain. The government's action had no effect on the trade imbalance.
   3. A scientific law, hypothesis, or phenomenon: the photovoltaic effect.
   4. Advantage; avail: used her words to great effect in influencing the jury.
   5. The condition of being in full force or execution: a new regulation that goes into effect tomorrow.
   6. Something that produces a specific impression or supports a general design or intention: The lighting effects emphasized the harsh atmosphere of the drama.
   7. A particular impression: large windows that gave an effect of spaciousness.
   8. Production of a desired impression: spent lavishly on dinner just for effect.
   9. The basic or general meaning; import: He said he was greatly worried, or words to that effect.

Grammar Rules for Affect and Effect

Now that we have the two definitions, how do we know which word to use? Here are a few suggestions to keep in mind:

1. If you are talking about a result, then use the word "effect."

    * Example: What effect did the loss have on the team?

2. It is appropriate to use the word "effect" if one of these words is used immediately before the word: into, no, take, the, any, an, or and.

    * Example: The prescribed medication had no effect on the patient's symptoms.
    * Example: In analyzing a situation, it is important to take the concepts of cause and effect into consideration.

3. If you want to describe something that was caused or brought about, the right word to use is effect.

    * Example: The new manager effected some positive changes in the office. (This means that the new manager caused some positive changes to take place in the office.)

4. Affect can be used as a noun to describe facial expression.

    * Example: The young man with schizophrenia had a flat affect.
    * Example: The woman took the news of her husband's sudden death with little affect.

5. Affect can also be used as a verb. Use it when trying to describe influencing someone or something rather than causing it.

    * Example: How does the crime rate affect hiring levels by local police forces?
    * Example: The weather conditions will affect the number of people who come to the county fair this year.

Now I am more confused than ever!

Well, now to see what effect this grammar lesson has on all of us!  Etta Sue, do you think it has affected you?   I think this is great!  We are never too old to learn!  Aren't you glad?  I am.

I had a good day scrapbooking.  I did a complete scrapbook of Red Hats photos, a little one, only 6 X 6, but just getting it DONE feels good.  We had such a pleasant group of ladies there today, plus two darling five-year-old boys.  They sure did enjoy each other!

We went to town last night hoping to go to the movie, but it appeared the theater was full, and we don't like to sit down in front, so decided to wait until tonight to go.  Jeff and Abby might come and go with us tonight.

I left the library (scrapbooking) early because I didn't have any more photos to work with, having taken everything BUT pictures to work on Alexis' album.  That gave me time to go read to Beth.  That is a really good book I'm reading to her!  Gives us both something to look forward to.

That's all, folks!   :)
