Morning Devotional...

More About Amazing Aspirin

"He heals the broken-hearted/And binds up their wounds."
Psalm 147:3

A few years ago we aired a "Creation Moments" program about how plants seem to have pain and alarm responses similar to humans and animals. Of course, we don't know if plants have feelings as we know them. But when a plant is injured, it produces a chemical called jasmonic acid. This acid produces a vapor, similar to the jasmine in commercial perfumes, that is sensed by surrounding plants. They, in turn respond to the signal.

When humans feel pain it is due to chemicals totally unrelated to jasmonic acids. As we all know, aspirin is important to pain management for many people. Aspirin works by disabling the chemicals that cause our pain. Now scientists have discovered that aspirin also works to shut down a plant's response to injury. Aspirin shuts off the plant's production of jasmonic acid, even though jasmonic acid is not at all similar to human pain-causing chemicals. More amazingly, aspirin's chemical reaction is of the same kind in plants and humans. So the next time you accidentally injure your favorite house plant, it might appreciate a small dose of aspirin!

While we can be thankful that God placed substances in the creation which help us manage pain, we should never forget that nothing in this creation can deal with the underlying cause of pain. Only Jesus Christ can bring healing from our sinful condition that results in both spiritual and physical pain.

Prayer: Lord, I thank You because You have loved me enough to endure the pain of the cross to remove my spiritual pain. Amen.

Wow.  Now I know what I can do to any poor plant that comes into my house.  Just buy some aspirin and keep it handy!!

Hope ya'll have a good morning/afternoon/evening.  I've got to meet with a "client" this afternoon.  I've agreed to shoot her wedding in June and I want to get a feel for the church before the actual event.

Take care, and I will try to post again before we leave for TN. :) :) :)

Good Morning to all who mayy drop by here ttoday.  Its a beautiful day here in Guelph.  Finally we are getting some lovely weather.

Tonight we are "helping to host" a friend's 80th birthday.  The party is taking place at our local Country Club.  Should be a lot of fun..... I will see many friends from out of town.  This person is one of our closest friends.
"I am too blessed to be stressed".

Marilyn

Pat that is very interesting about aspirin.  I have a plant that may need a little boost after being transplanted and going into shock.

Our Reasonable God

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool" (Isaiah 1:18).

Our God is a reasonable God, and our faith is a reasonable faith, based on sound evidence. It is not a credulous faith like that of the evolutionist who blindly believes either in the god of chance or in some sort of cosmic consciousness.

Furthermore, He has told us to be reasonable in our witness to others. "Be ready always to give an answer [that is, an apologetic, a reasoned defense of our faith] to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear" (I Peter 3:15).

But how can it be reasonable that one whose deeds have been crimson with sin could ever be made "white as snow"? That would seem impossible! He or she would have to be "born again." This would require a mighty miracle-a reversal of time-and eradication of all the sins of the past.

And that would indeed be unreasonable-even impossible, were it not for God. But "The things which are impossible with men are possible with God" (Luke 18:27). What seems incredible to human wisdom is altogether reasonable to the God of creation. He has allowed man the freedom to sin (so that he could also be free to choose righteousness), but He can never fail in His creative purpose. "Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men" (I Corinthians 1:25).

This divine wisdom is centered in the sacrificial death and victorious resurrection of Christ, our Creator and Redeemer, who "loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood" (Revelation 1:5). As a result, now our "reasonable service" to Him is for each of us to offer ourselves to Him as "a living sacrifice" (Romans 12:1). HMM

Thanks for that, Pat.  Did those reactions in plants come about via evolution and natural selection?  Did they come about through the reasoning of the plants?  They came about through the wisdom and power of God our Father!

Karma, funny, funny story!!

Great devotions...one and all!!

Wow!  I turned off the computer right after midnight when I posted yesterdays NEM and didn't turn on the computer until this morning.  And it didn't even hurt!  First time the pc hasn't been on when I was home.  I missed people but didn't miss the generic emails and such.

Last week it was near freezing and today I have two loads of clothes on the line already.  Mother's Day, it is suppose to get in the 80°'s in central Indiana!!!!  Whooeee!

I got my picture taken at church yesterday and of course, the way they make their money is people ordering extra pictures.  Well, I did.  Everything is going sky high in prices....inclucing pictures.  After that, I printed out some labels for the next two weeks at church for the cassette tapes.  I had Taco Bell for dinner and then stopped for a few groceries before coming home.  I spent a lovely evening watching my recorded TV shows and still have 13 shows to watch...not including what will be recorded today.  So I am hoping to get more caught up today.  Would love to sit outside in the swing and listen to nature and pray.

Here is a copy of the email I got from Papa John this morning.

Hello Marilyn,

Thanks for the email.  We are doing fine and I appreciate your asking.  I felt like I had to cut down some on the computer time but I do miss my friends on CP and maybe I'll try to get back in some.

It seems like we have been more active lately in the activities at church.  Last Saturday we had 24 hours of prayer when groups met at the church every hour to pray.  We had from 10:00 to 11:00 Saturday with a nice group.  This is part of a 40 days of prayer campaign where are all encouraged to spend more time in prayer.

I continue to have a problem with walking due to a stroke and arthritis and bulging disks etc.  We have bought an electric scooter but it hasn't come yet.  It will help me to get around when much walking is involved.  You can see it    http://www.ultralite.biz/products/vision.shtml

I hope you find suitable housing soon.  I know this has been a problem for you.  Usually things will work and I hope they will for you.

God bless you Marilyn,

Papa John

Thanks for sharing Papa John's email, Marilyn.

How's everyone doing?  I have to get to the eye doctor very soon so will be leaving the house shortly.

I'll be back though.

Hi everyone.

I am finally getting here before late in the evening.  This has been a more relaxed morning.

I had to get up early and set the casserole, that I mentioned yesterday, out of the refrigerator.  Then went back to bed for awhile but had to get it in the over by 6:15.  Fortunately for me Pat got up before that and finished it up and put it in the oven.   It was a big hit with the men at the senior center and had only two small pieces left to bring home.

This evening we will take my friend Rod and his wife Betty out to dinner to celebrate his birthday.  Tomorrow morning he is going to come over and see if he can figure out what is wrong with my laptop.  He loaned me a tester for the power unit but it didn't show the problem.  Fortunately I can work on my laptop but can't access a lot of the files that I normally keep on my desktop.  I hooked up the printer to the laptop and did some printing this morning.  Think I will take a little nap this afternoon as don't have a lot that I need to get done and don't plan to go anywhere this afternoon.

Pat, that was an interesting devotional.  I sort of wondered where it was going when I started reading it in terms of giving plants human qualities.  However, I don't think the writer was saying that.

Marilyn, thanks for sharing the postings from Papa John.  I looked at the link for the scooter and it looks like something that should be very helpful to him.

Happy Birthday Smokey.

TBear, these early dates can be very important to our youngsters.  Hope your daughter has a wonderful time.  Is she just beginning to date?

Etta Sue, our church does the pictorial directory every few years and I expect we are about due again.  It is a big job to get people in to take the pictures but the directories are nice to have especially in a large church.

Judy & Pat, glad you are now beginning to have some nice weather.  Judy, enjoy the party this evening for your friend.  It sounds like it will be very nice if it is being conducted at the country club as they usually have very nice facilities.

Nita, I once tried to learn to play the guitar but as I played the piano I had no success in getting my figures toughened up.  Also didn't take any lessons (which probably has something to do with why I didn't learn how to play it).  I decided to stay with the piano.

Think it is time for a little nap.

Hi, friends,

The dogs have been out for a quick stroll and I'm almost ready to eat a bit of lunch.

Y'all have a good day - I'm on my way back to the office.

Preaching: A Major Preaching Challenge

Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by
prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. Meditate
on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress
may be evident to all.
--1 Timothy 4:14-15

Many of us who preach the unsearchable riches of Christ are often
pretty dull and hard to listen to.

The freshest thought to visit the human mind should be the thought
of God. The story of salvation should put a radiancy in the face
and a vibrancy in the voice of him that tells it. Yet it is not
uncommon to hear the wondrous message given in a manner that makes
it difficult for the hearer to concentrate on what is being said.
What is wrong?...

It is true that only the Spirit-filled preacher can be morally
effective at last; but for the moment we are thinking only of the
ability of a speaker to command the attention of his hearers. And
if the speaker cannot keep his hearers immediately interested,
his message cannot possibly have a long-range effect upon them,
no matter how spiritual he may be.  The Warfare of the Spirit,
67-68.

"Lord, in this media-saturated, video-oriented age, it is
increasingly difficult for the preacher to hold the interest of
sound-bite listeners. Yet as we give ourselves to the task of
preaching, You've promised to bless, and we thank You. Amen."

When We See Christ
(Click to hear music)

"It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope--the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you." I Titus 2:12-15

By Esther Kerr Rusthoi

Oft times the day seems long, our trials hard to bear,
We're tempted to complain, to murmur and despair;
But Christ will soon appear to catch His Bride away,
All tears forever over in God's eternal day.

Refrain

It will be worth it all when we see Jesus,
Life's trials will seem so small when we see Christ;
One glimpse of His dear face all sorrow will erase,
So bravely run the race 'til we see Christ.

Sometimes the sky looks dark with not a ray of light,
We're tossed and driven on, no human help in sight;
But there is One in heaven who knows our deepest care,
Let Jesus solve your problem--just go to Him in prayer.

Refrain

Life's day will soon be o'er, all storms forever past,
We'll cross the great divide to glory, safe at last.
We'll share the joys of heaven--a harp, a home, a crown.
The tempter will be banished, we'll lay our burden down.

Sue

I had a long day at work today, but was released an hour early.  I couldn't get in to see my doctor (I will most likely need to have my ankle/foot x-rayed), but was able to get my hair trimmed.  I feel a lot better.  I had a brief chat with my Mom, and now will be heading to bed.  I am listening to some relaxing Chistian music here http://www.oldchristianradio.com/ .

Karma, and family.....have a great weekend!

Etta Sue, I know what you mean about the computer....it seems as though when I am home, the computer is on, and I'm in front of it.  It takes some effort to turn it off and walk away, but when I do, I generally feel better.

Pat, I hope you have a restful evening.

Night everyone.

Ruth

Pat: Interesting story.

We had a most beautiful day, I did a little work in the garden while Mel got the riding tractor out and cut the grass for the first time.  I must admit it is like getting a hair cut it looks grand.

Papa John you will really enjoy your new means of transportation.

Marilyn: Thanks for sharing  Papa John's e-mail.
