A Spider Treatment for Stroke?

"When Jesus heard it, He said to them, 'Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.'"
Mark 2:17

A spider's venom paralyzes its victim, keeping the victim fresh, yet immobile. Spider venom does this by slowing or stopping the work of a chemical called glutamate, which controls muscle movement in insects. Glutamate is also an important messenger chemical in the human brain.

When someone has a stroke, the chemistry changes in those brain cells that are not receiving enough blind. Under these conditions glutamate actually kills brain cells. So medical researchers have been searching for medically safe drugs that can be given to stroke patients to block the damage inflicted by glutamate.

Neurobiologist Hunter Jackson is searching for drugs in spider venom that might be safely used to block glutamate's damage. To do this he collected, raised, and milked spiders. He had to do 10,000 milkings to get enough venom to study. Spider venom is a mixture of many different chemicals. Jackson says that some of those that block glutamate have not proven safe. However, animal tests now show that about 20 of the chemicals from spider venom deserve more study for possible use.

We can easily be tempted to try to find the solutions for all our problems within this creation. We need to remember that while these solutions are blessings, the solutions found in the creation, at best, only solve temporary problems. In contrast forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ provides a permanent solution to the problems caused by sin.

Prayer: Forgive me Lord, for those times that I have looked for temporary earthly solutions for problems that are really caused by my sin. Enable me to do a better job of looking to Your suffering and death for the forgiveness of my sins and to Your resurrection for my new life. Amen.

May 13 - The Way of Man

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps" (Jeremiah 10:23).

A Nineteenth-Century poet boasted: "I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul." The Twentieth Century Humanist Manifesto proclaims: "No deity will save us; we must save ourselves." A popular song proudly asserts: "I did it my way!"

The fact is, however, that humanism has failed. Whether exercised at the level of government paternalism or individual self-sufficiency, the notion that any man or group of men can make decisions and go their own ways with no regard to the will of their Creator is arrogant foolishness. "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death" (Proverbs 14:12).

God does have a will for both men and nations. "In times past [He] suffered all nations to walk in their own ways. . . . And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent" (Acts 14:16; 17:30). It would make a tremendous impact for world peace and national happiness if only our national and world leaders would formulate their policies in accordance with the revealed will of God, through His Word.

But this ideal may never be approached until Christ Himself returns. In the meantime, He has promised guidance in each individual life when that life is truly yielded to His will. No man can really "direct his steps," as our text points out, but "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and . . . none of his steps shall slide" (Psalm 37:23,31).

God's will is always in accordance with His Word, of course, for He cannot contradict Himself. We can therefore confidently act on His promise: "In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths" (Proverbs 3:6). HMM

It's always amazing to discover the the things God thought of in eternity.  Long after our Lord returns we'll still be discovering the wonders of His creation!  In the meanwhile, though, we can certainly thank Him for the discoveries that have already been made - even from the venom of spiders!  Karmat - I don't personally recommend that you (or I) milk any spiders.  Let the expert dairy-farmer-scientists do that!

Good Morning everyone: So great to be here for another day. Don't you just love the way God brings forth each new day. Beautiful sunrises, rain to make everything grow. No rain on the West coast of America today, it is beautiful, the temperature is just right.

The grass around my house is about knee high right now and I am waiting for soneone anyone to come and mow it.  have asked Gilbert and also the deacons so may be it will get mowed. I started the back with the weedeater but It has gotten away from me and my back gave out before I could finish. The fox tails are showing and I don't like fox tails, dangerous for the dogs.

I am going to call the junk yard today to see about towing away my old car it doesn't look like it is going to sell and I need to get it out of here. I don't want to take it with me when I move.

On Tuesday next I am going to apply for subsidized housing and try to get on the program.

Last night was another early bed/late to rise nights.  I am finally getting tired of being horizontal.  So this evening a classmate and I are going out for Chinese...Hi Mieka!!!  I doubt if we are going to be gone too long.  But I do want to stop at the grocery before coming home.

Milking spiders??  I will leave that to someone else, thank you.

I got my new maps CD-Rom for my GPS so I was playing around with it this morning.  These even tell the schools, gas stations, shopping malls, Post Offices, Banks and ATMS...some of them...not all.  Will be much more convenient.  Before for a GoTo it was a straight line.  Now I can go 'street by street'.  Tells you which direction to turn on what street.  Might be handy also.  Now to check it out when I put it in the car tonight.

Nice and sunny out but chilly inside.  I shut off the A/C.

Preaching: Prophet, Not Orator
And I have put My words in your mouth; I have covered you with the
shadow of My hand, that I may plant the heavens, lay the
foundations of the earth, and say to Zion, "You are My people."
--Isaiah 51:16
The Christian minister, as someone has pointed out, is a
descendant not of the Greek orator but of the Hebrew prophet.
The differences between the orator and the prophet are many and
radical, the chief being that the orator speaks for himself while
the prophet speaks for God. The orator originates his message and
is responsible to himself for its content. The prophet originates
nothing but delivers the message he has received from God who
alone is responsible for it, the prophet being responsible to God
for its delivery only. The prophet must hear the message clearly
and deliver it faithfully, and that is indeed a grave
responsibility; but it is to God alone, not to men.  God Tells
the Man Who Cares, 85.
"Lord, I'm reminded this morning of the thought from the late
seminary chaplain Richard Seume: 'When your people sit in front
of you on Sunday morning, they're not interested in hearing
another man tell them how to live their lives; they've come to
hear a word from God.' May that be my prophetic perspective
this week. Amen."

Janet

Looks like another slow day here in CP.  My day has been anything but slow!  After exercise this morning, I came home (had to, Darrel and Beth were with me!) changed and went right back to town to decorate for tonight's banquet.  I have put in eleven hard hours on that, but it looks lovely.  I will take some photos and show you.  We used quilts---all kinds and sizes and ages of qullts-- to decorate the room.  So I made many, many trips up and down the ladder!

Milk a spider?  Methinks my fingers are much too big for the job!  ;)

I am really beat, just wanted to say hi before I shower and lie down for a little while.  I will tell Darrel to wake me, just in case I really fall fast asleep. :-\

Marilyn, how are foxtails dangerous to dogs?  We have them all over the place (hate 'em) but never heard anything about them being dangerous to dogs before!  Please explain.  Thanks.

See you all later!

that sounds cool etta.

point it towards Canton (NC) adn come and see us!!! :)

Marilyn

Janet Foxtails are dangerous for dogs to be around because they can get them in their eyes and/or ears  and stuck in their pads too, and  will have to be anesthesized to get them out. I had a dog that got one under her eyelid. the foxtails just keep working themselves deeper and deeper.
No No to foxtails.  ;D

Nita

It's a little after 5 pm here, so good evening everyone.

We had lots of sunshine today, so I was able to get some mowing done, cut out old canes in the berries, pulled a few weeds.  I picked up piles of dead weeds I'd cut earlier with the weedeater, and it was full of little black spiders.  I looked really close, but there wasn't one of those scurrying little critters that looked milkable.  You'd have to be really fast.  And I think my hands were cold, and you know you can't milk with cold hands.

I NOW HAVE A CAR!   I haven't had one for around two weeks.  My son in law thought it might be the fuel filter.  It wasn't.  The mechanic, where I took it then, was sure it was the fuel pump.  It wasn't.  It ended up being the ignition.  A new "ignition module" would be $540, so I asked him to look for a used one.  It was $100.  I don't think it's fair, but I still had to pay what he paid for the fuel pump, because he couldn't take it back, he said.  Is that how it works?  The bill was $493.73.   I didn't have that, so had to put it on a credit card. Gulp!  My Father knows all about it....

Still playing the guitar and enjoying it so much.  And I like listening to my daughter play, and my grandson learning.  I'd like to fill my house with all kinds if musical instruments and sooner or later, someone will want to learn to play.

Marilyn, you've reminded me that I have Foxgloves in my yard that are poisonous.  I need to pull them.  Anyone know about holly berries?

Blessings,  nita

Marilyn

`-Nita get rid of the holly berries or cut them so they will  be to hight for the dogs to reach. Also watch out for bulbs you may be planting some are toxic to dogs and pups will dig them up if they see you planting them or if the soil is soft.

Larry Hanna

Hi everyone.  I have had a very busy day again today.  After the Friday morning coffee this morning at the senior center I took Pat for a chiropractic treatment and then went to the big Senior Center where we had our monthly volunteer meeting, a business luncheon and then had our monthly PC User Group meeting.  Our guest speaker today was a representative of Smart Computing magazine.  He gave a very good presentation about the magazine and all the extras that you get with a subscription by using the member's only section of their website.  We haoud about 80 people in attendance this afternoon.  I had wanted to go to the car dealer and drive a car that I am considering buying but was just too tired so came home and rested for awhile.  Since then have been busy trying to catch up on e-mail and attend to a few other details.

I never heard of milking spiders and I will certainly leave that to someone else.  That sort of fits into the category with working with snakes.  No way, thank you.

Interesting postings today.  Janet, it sounds like your decorating was quite extensive.  I will look forward to seeing your photos.

Marilyn, using a weedeather can be very difficult work.  I used to have a home that had a high bank that I had to weedeat as couldn't use a lawn mower on it.  Hope your subsidized housing works out.  My sister-in-law tried to get into such housing around Kansas City and there was a very long waiting list.

Mona, welcome to CP.

Nita, there is nothing cheap about getting a car repaired.  We have decided to purchase a new small car for our daughter that will have a 5 year 60,000 bumper to bumper warranty.  With her neuropathy in her feet and legs it is not likely she will be driving much beyond that time.  This car also has a 100,000 mile warranty on the drive train.  This will give both Pat and I piece of mind.  I just can't see pouring a lot of money into the car she has now as the transmission is going bad.

Guess I had better sign off for tonight.

Ruth Ann Bice

Thus far, Larry, I've kept my neuropathy sort-of under control. You're correct, though, at some point we may not be able to drive. It's better to know these things "up front" rather than when it becomes a crisis.

Well, it was a nice day. My boss had challenged me to get one of the cell phone companies to refund the credit he had with them, since he had changed to another provider. He had tried and failed.

Well, I phoned them acting very official-sounding (but not rude), and got through the first level of response, then to the second. They agreed to send a check, but said it would be at least 4-8 weeks before the check came.

So, I responded that it seemed odd to me that a firm so intent upon charging late fees if payments were not in on time, I was puzzled as to why it would take one to two months for them to refund a small amount.

Result, it's been 2 weeks, and he invited me to lunch today. Turns out that he had vowed if he got that money back, he'd take me to lunch! So, we stopped by the bank first for him to cash that refund check, then had two nice grilled fish lunches.  ;D

Y'all have a nice evening.

Ruth Ann

Pat

It's very early tonight to lock the door but we're in the middle of a very bad storm here.  It's come from Detroit, Michigan and it's arriving in Guelph now.  Out lights have been off and on several times so I thought I'd do this for Janet now in case I'm left without lights to do it later.
