Baptism and Temptation
Mark 1:1-13  NLT

    1Here begins the Good News about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.
    2In the book of the prophet Isaiah, God said,

   
         "Look, I am sending my messenger before you,
           and he will prepare your way.

      3  He is a voice shouting in the wilderness:
         `Prepare a pathway for the Lord's coming!
          Make a straight road for him!' "

    4This messenger was John the Baptist. He lived in the wilderness and was preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had turned from their sins and turned to God to be forgiven. 5People from Jerusalem and from all over Judea traveled out into the wilderness to see and hear John. And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River. 6His clothes were woven from camel hair, and he wore a leather belt; his food was locusts and wild honey. 7He announced: "Someone is coming soon who is far greater than I am--so much greater that I am not even worthy to be his slave.  8I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!"

   9One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and he was baptized by John in the Jordan River. 10And when Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens split open and the Holy Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11And a voice came from heaven saying, "You are my beloved Son, and I am fully pleased with you."

   12Immediately the Holy Spirit compelled Jesus to go into the wilderness. 13He was there for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was out among the wild animals, and angels took care of him.
What are your most difficult temptations?  Compare them to Jesus' temptations.

   To identify fully with human beings, Jesus had to endure Satan's temptations.  Although Jesus is God, he is also man, and as a human being he was not exempt from Satan's attacks.
     
   Because Jesus faced temptations and overcame them, he can assist us in two important ways:   
                     
      (1) as an example of how to face temptation without sinning and

      (2) as our helper who knows just what we need because he went through the same experience.
 
   When you face temptation, trust Jesus to help you overcome it.

Pat, so happy that you have help cleaning your basement and house.  Did your new fridge come today?  It will be nice for you to have the girls around....will keep you young!!

Janet, you will think of something unique for you and your 3-4 lady friends.  Is that big feed lot still outside of Dodge City?  How about something there...if you can stand the smell.  Or does it have to be in Hugoton?  Anyway....you will think of something. 

Not much else to say right now.  My mind is fuddled.  Time for beddy-bye!!

I was posting and got locked out!  Saved it tho' and thanks for the sore head and the nice devotional, Etta Sue.

I only now finished reading today's posts and happy to learn that you now have secured a new home, Marilyn.  Like many here, I have prayed about the matter on a regular basis.  Know how much your pets mean to you.

Today was market day and also hair day as I needed to have mine trimmed.  My hair stylist is from near London and we discussed the bombing in England and how it affected her relatives.  They were all fine and only one family member caused a scare by having her cell phone turned off all day.  No one could reach her after the trouble.....

Surely can feel fall in the air here and it is beginning to turn dark much earlier.  Hard to belive that fall is almost here....Country Fair this weekend.  The Senior Games are being held here in the valley and so there is much excitement and people everywhere.  I am not taking part due to unreliable health and no longer have my partner for the sports.  Life changes.  Will go to watch some things  and certainly plan on the fair.  It is a real oldstyle, little country fair and lots of fun.

Papa John, I also have heard/seen David Ring on TV and was much impressed.  He gave much credit to his mother for all she did to help him as a child and had a great message.  I hope that you enjoyed the service.

We have saved some of the trees for the moment.  The ones that block the mess from view.  Not certain if that will last.  What a mess they have made of the lovely woods.  What is that song, When You Go Down In The Woods Today, Your In For A Big Surprise...?  I guess that by doing everything at once they save lots of money, no matter what cost to the residents.  Seems like money is the only thing that matters now.

I was thinking about Faye and her negative remarks to Marilyn.  Someone once wrote:  Every time you speak, your mind is on parade.  She must have a sad mind.  I always liked this little poem and thought it had a lot of value:

A wise old owl sat on an oak;
The more he saw, the less he spoke;
The less he spoke, the more he heard-
Why aren't we like that wise old bird?

we had an earthquake last night!  My niece Shay had left our house just a few minutes before, so when I heard/felt it, it scared the bejeebies out of me.  It felt like an explosion had rocked the house, so I was afraid her four-wheeler had blown up, a plane crashed into a mountain nearby, or the local meth lab had finally blown up.  (She had just walked in the door of her house when it happened, and my sister thought she was slamming the door really hard for some odd reason).  The epicenter was about 20 miles from here (as the crow flies), and was pretty near my mom.  I only lasted like a second and a half, and it was only a 3.8, but it still set me on edge.  Glad I don't live out west!!!!!   Supposedly tremors were felt as far away as Marietta, GA.  (3 or 4 hour drive). 

So that is my excitement.  I'm outta here to do something constructive today (like laundry, again. :) )

Well, we did enjoy hearing David Ring last night.  He is a man who overcame great difficulties in his life.  In spite of his cerebral palsy he went on through school, graduated from college,  married and has a beautiful family with four children, and has become a nationally known  evangelist.  We enjoyed hearing his story last night.

Karmat I was 89 miles from the epicenter of the quake that destroyed that freeway in Oakland, California and broke the San Francisco bay bridge. in 1989. We do have some bad ones here in California, a 3.8 is nothing here, we have them from 2.0 to 8.1

I am still on cloud nine about this little house. God is so good. He has answered by prayers exactly. From the washer and dryer hookups, not leaving McKinleyville, being close to the church, to the big back yard for the dogs. (Happy is a boy, Bebe is a girl). This house is a great faith builder, I have always said that God had a place for me and that it just wasn't vacant yet. It also has a big front yard  am going to need a lawn mower.

One of my clients Jan one time asked me if I was going only on faith for a house or was I looking too. Of course I was looking too, She was with me when I went to see the house last Thursday and I believe that if she was able she was jumping for joy when I called her yesterday, she just kept saying "it worked, I prayed every day that you would get that house." She was so excited. Today I am taking her shopping she wants to get a little something for the house, I do need a shower curtain.

Sorry to keep going on and on about the house, but I am so happy and so blessed. Thank you Jesus. I am praising the Lord.

I really appreciate your faithful posting of Scripture, Papa John, especially this one.  So many misquote this one or quote it out of context.  It's so good to know that, whether we "abound" in this world's wealth or are "abased" in it, yet our Lord strengthens us and makes us able to do His will.  Oh thank You, Father!

And we thank Him for the house for you, Marilyn!  We have some friends from the church who live less than a block from that house, so we know the neighborhood, and it is a good one.  Also, they won't be tearing it down soon, either!

Rents, house prices, etc. are horribly high in Calif. these days.  Rentals that would have been $400/month 3 years ago are now $800/900.  Prices for the traditional 3br, 2ba house that was about $90,000 3/4 years ago are now $350,000 or more.  I don't understand it at all.  And gasoline!  Where it was $1.49 it is now $2.93/gal.  The oil-producing countries are not paying one cent more to produce it, but they're receiving 150% more profit!  That's criminal, and one day they'll have to stand before God and answer for their greed.  In the meanwhile, though, those of us on fixed incomes have to face a cost-of-living that's not fixed (sure needs fixing, though!).  Pray that our Lord may soon return.

Pastor Al, you are so right!  My little pensions keep getting smaller every day :-\ 
It is a beautiful morning here on the island and I just stopped in again to check things.  No time for the computer until evening. 

The terrible gas prices are going to make serious problems for those who commute to work in Victoria.  Also for small business men, like my SIL.  Alberta is an oil rich province and much envied by all....but they just sold off one of their BIG companies to China.  China is buying lots of our resources these days.  Go figure... ???

Glad that no matter what, God is in control of all this and our world can still be filled with peace and it is possible to take joy in the space we occupy.

Hi all.  I will have to be brief today as have a lot to do and I have let the morning slip away in just getting caught up on the postings on here and SeniorNet as I didn't get to either place yesterday.

I had an appointment with a cardiologist specialist at a hospital close to downtown Atlanta and we had to leave the house around 1 pm.  We didn't get home until almost 6 pm and then I had to rest, get a bite to eat and get to choir practice.  

I am going to have an Implantable Cardioverter Defribrillator (ICD) put in my chest that is both a pacemaker and a defribrillator.  While I don't have any rhytmn problem that I know of the EKG indicated I may be having some disfunctioning between the chambers of the heart and due to the bad condition of my heart I am at high risk for another heart attack or stroke and potentially sudden cardiac death.  I will spend one night in the hospital and then the doctor said I will have to take things easy for a couple of weeks (which I have had to do anyway but so probably won't notice any difference there.)

This device would intervene to restore the problem electrical functioning of the heart.  In addition it will pace the heart.  The doctor was not encouraging that I will see any increase in energy levels but some people do.  I have to go back to this same hospital on Monday afternoon for a Doppler test in preparation, have blood work done and then the day of the procedure (which will be scheduled as soon as possible) I will have to have an electrophysiologic (EP) study done which are tests of the heart's electrical system.  

I will be sedated and they induce certain heart events to determine how the heart reacts.  I will then go on into a cath lab to have the ICD placed.   This is a small and sophisticated device about the size of a stop watch that has wires that go into heart and one on the outside if the doctor can get it there.  There used to be two separate devices involved but they have not been combined.  Enough detail as probably have bored you all to pieces.  If you are interested here is a link to a website that has information for patients that the Heart Rhythm Society has.  I haven't had time to read through the site but I got a couple of sheets of information yesterday that explains both procedures put out by the organization.  http://www.hrspatients.org/

Marilyn, I am very excited for you getting the house.  God has provided and it sounds ideal.  Small house, less cleaning to do, smaller utility bills.  So there are many advantages.  Having your washer and dryer and the place for your dogs is great.

Janet and Ruth Ann, not good news on your computers.  I am still having trouble with my desktop just rebooting.  They are suppose to be more reliable.  Don't know what I am going to do.

Judy M, I did specifically tell Pat that you were praying for her (as I know many of the folks on CP are doing).  She appreciates it.

Marilyn, Yea, I know in Cali, 3.8 is nothing.  But in WNC where we get maybe one earthquake every 20 years, 3.8 is somehting to notice. :)  "Officials" were quoted as saying they were common here as my hometown sits directly on a fault line.  Not sure what the "officials" were saying is common, though.   I am so pleased that you got the house.

I have just  canned 7 pints of Strawberry Jam, I can hear the lids popping now. While we were out shopping today Jan bought me a pretty lavender shower curtain and a liner. I had so much fun looking at the things I plan to get for the house.  I have so many decorating ideas that I have never been able to do before.  I love it Thank you Jesus.

Liz ~ I am so sorry about your sore head.  My mistake.  I get email notifications and I can't tell who is on the thread with me unless I go to the top...unless someone can tell me otherwise.  I forget you westerners are still up while my eyes are drooping. 

Karma ~ I was trying to remember if I felt any movement down under last night but I didn't.  We have had some tremors here but not often or heavy.  Bet you were scared to death. 

Papa John ~ Now I know who David Ring is.  When you said he has cerebral palsy I remembered my son and his wife having seen and heard him talk.  Remarkable man.

Babycakes ~ Did you have summer break from home-schooling, too?  Time to hit the books again!

Marilyn ~ I can read the happiness in your post.  It will be exciting to move into your new place.  A lot easier than your last move...I am sure.  It may be small but hey, that means less to have to clean.  Besides you will get outside and mow your grass.  Next year we can have contests in mowing!!  When you write to Ria, do tell her I think of her often.  I miss her cheerful posts.

Al ~ I understand.  The price of utilities, gas, food...what I call necessities have gone up tremendously but my poor income is the same as it was 10 years ago.  I keep telling my sister...if prices rise too much, one of us will sell our house and move in with the other!! 

Ruth Ann ~ Sorry about your computer.  Seems that there are a few others with ill computers or dead ones.  Hope you get a new one soon.

Alma ~ Thanks for the poem....I was wondering how it would end...surprise!  Just like those already in heaven.

Larry ~ I know this procedure may be trying for you but it sounds like it is just what you need.  God Bless You, Larry.  May you stay calm and recover quickly.  Give yourself to God...he is the one who made you and understands all your problems.  He can make them right!

Pat ~ I am so wanting to get out and take photos but as you know, I am still waiting on my new camera.  It is still on back order.  I was hoping I would have it for Labor Day...in the U.S. that is September 5th.  But if not, hopefully for fall colors.  I am visualizing sharp, crisp pictures from Etta Sue.

Carol ~ How is the new roof?  About done?

Well, early this morning, Ivalou called and wanted to know if I would get her mail today and tomorrow.  She went with Kaye Don and Barb to Michigan to watch their grandsons play football.  This is the first time I have been alone in the neighborhood since moving here.  It is an eery feeling.  I had Jerry come stay when this happened before but now I am alone.  I even mowed today and never have done that when no one else is home.  I not only mowed but the grass was so high, I needed to rake.  Well, rakes don't fit my hands so I got out my rickety lawn sweeper...the wheels are plastic and broken and sounds like one of those old metal wheeled tractors.  But it did the job.  I was out in the sun for over three hours today...kind of drained me. 

Tomorrow I think I will go grocery shopping and eat out somewhere....

Hello folks...

I'm so tired tonight.  My granddaughter has been keeping me busy all day.  She's now in bed and I've had a shower and am ready for bed but I'm sitting here really enjoying the hymn that I've put in for tomorrow's devotional.  That's one of my favourites.  I hope you all enjoy it as well.

We shampooed the carpet in the little room upstairs that I've been using for my computer and tomorrow we'll put the bed in there.  I now have my computer in the basement and this room is almost fixed up.  When it's all done, I'll take a photo of it for you all.

That might be a nice little project for all of us--to take a photo of our computer area and put them in the gallery.

Time to lock the door now.
