I was going into a science curriculum meeting, and when I went in and mentioned it, the meeting was temporarily adjourned until everyone went out and took a look. I've seen them before, but this one was nearly as bright as the sun. There are always two, one on each side of the sun, but the right one was rather dim.
They form when there are ice crystals in the high atmosphere, but only when the crystals are oriented so that their flat surfaces are vertical.
How interesting!
Pretty good too for the cell phone. I must try some on mine.

Enjoyed the science lesson as well. I knew ice crystals were involved but not how they were involved. Thank you.
