Giving God Our Burdens


At some point in life, we all will struggle with a weighty problem or heartache. Scripture tells us that when such times of distress occur, we are to bring our burden to the Lord.

The problem, however, is that many Christians cast their care upon Him but quickly grab their troubles or anxiety right back.

In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says the heavy-laden should come to God.

In biblical times, the Pharisaical law and its interpretation were a burden because the religious leaders had added scores of their own stipulations to the Lord's commands.

The people were left trying to obey the Law and please God by satisfying the temple leadership—a hopeless goal that was impossible to reach.

Jesus' message to them, and to us today, is that no matter what our burden is, we have the privilege of bringing it to God and allowing Him to carry its weight.

The way to leave our troubles with Him is to respond to His invitation: "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28).

Christ's offer is personal and all-inclusive. He invites anybody and everybody who will come, and there are absolutely no limitations on the type of burden He will ease.

The first step is to trust Jesus as your personal Savior, receiving His substitutionary death on the cross as payment-in-full for your sin-debt.

In doing so, you will lay your sins at His feet. (2 Timothy 3:6) Once the weight of your transgressions has been lifted, you are free to accept relief from the heaviness of day-to-day life, whether emotional, physical, financial, or spiritual.

Christ's motivation, very simply, is love. (1 John 4: He loves everyone—people who are trapped by a lifestyle of sin and Christians who are trying their best, yet are weighed down with afflictions. While He does not promise to remove our struggles completely, He does guarantee rest for the soul.

No matter who you are or what your challenge may be, Jesus wants to lighten your load. Don't be afraid to approach the One who is "gentle and humble in heart"—He stands ready and waiting to lift the burden from your shoulders onto His.
