I stumbled across this classic German Christmas carol a couple years ago and it has since become one of my favorites. While there are several translations of this song (including "Snow Falls Softly at Night"), as is the case with many things, a lot gets lost in the translation. A literal translation really brings out the joy and happiness conveyed by the original German lyrics...
German:
Leise rieselt der Schnee,
Still und starr liegt der See,
Weihnachtlich glänzet der Wald
Freue dich, 's Christkind kommt bald!
In den Herzen ist's warm;
Still schweigt Kummer und Harm.
Sorge des Lebens verhallt;
Freue dich! 's Christkind kommt bald!
Bald ist heilige Nacht,
Chor der Engel erwacht;
Horch nur, wie lieblich es schallt,
Freue dich, 's Christkind kommt bald!
's Kindlein, göttlich und arm,
Macht die Herzen so warm,
Strahle, du Stern überm Wald,
Freue dich, s'Christkind kommt bald!
English:
Snow trickles lightly
The see lies calm and stark
The forest shines Christmassy
Rejoice, the Christ Child comes soon!
In the hearts it is warm
Heartache and harm are silent
The worry of life dies away
Rejoice, the Christ Child comes soon!
Soon is the holy night
Choirs of angels awaken
Just listen, how lovely it shall be
Rejoice, the Christ Child comes soon!
The [Christ] Child, Godly and poor
Makes the hearts so warm
Shine, you star above the forest
Rejoice, the Christ Child comes soon!

Thanks so much for sharing with us.
It is lovely. Thank you for putting the lyrics in English so I can read as the song plays. Nita
