JennyW: Hello Everyone! I really miss activity on this site. I've been discouraged by photography sites where you have to sort through so much explicit content in order to see photos that truly glorify God. I'd love to see this site pick up again. 2023-05-16, 08:46:36

Hi,

I'm Steve, and I'm a friend of Al's from No. CA.

I had a question about digital photograph file size.  I have a Sony dig. camcorder that also has a memory stick that we can take photos with.  We want to put some pictures of items for sale onto the Amazon website, but the file size of our photos is around 150k bytes.  Seems like this is gargantuan, most of the ones we see on Amz. are around 5k.  Is there a way to change the size of the file?  I really appreciate any wisdom you had  about this.

Merry Christmas!

Hi Steve - hope someone will soon answer you.  Of all the folders in the site, this one is not the most frequented, though there are some who monitor it pretty well.  Also on this site is another folder - one that almost everybody goes to - and that's New Every Morning.  It's our coffee shop.  So pull up a chair, grab a mug, and join in.  You'll find lots of info on there (or from people on there).

150k is actually pretty small for photo file size these days, as many camera produces files of 3 MEGAbytes and larger, but that aside...

Yes, photo editing software can be used to reduce both the pixel dimensions of the file and the actual file size, with corresponding loss of detail and color information.  A 640x480 file of 150kb is about normal.

Reducing the file to 500x375 makes 35-40kb pretty reachable.  Going all the way down to 5k would require a significant resize and / or SEVERE compression.

Any help at all?  I know plenty more about it, but I'm not sure I understand where you're trying to "get to", so I'll stop there for now.
I survived open heart surgery.... :)

Welcome to CP SteveMc

Do you have Paint shop Pro or Photoshop both of those are great for resizing your photos.?

Hi Nards,

I'll try resizing like you suggested and we'll see how it goes.
What I'm trying to do is to get photos of book covers to post on Amazon.  I've heard that if the file size is too large, it takes a long time for the image to load.  When I checked some of the images already on Amazon, it seemed like they were all around 4kb to 6kb.  that seems small, but that's what they were...

thanks for the info.  Like I said ,I'll try, then tell you what happens.

Hope all you are having a Joyous Christmas!

Hi Marilyn,

I don't have either one of those, I think I've got a program that came with our Epson printer/scanner/copier, but it's not a good program.  I also have a desktop pub. prog., and an old copy of "Lview pro" which if I can figure out how to work it might help.  I may hve to get some new software...

P.S.  I hope I'm posting in the right places, I'm not used to this and I don't know what I'm doing...

Hi Steve...  I think that if you resize your photo to about 100 pixels high and the width resized in ratio to that, you'll find that your book cover is about the right size.

Do the resize first in pixels and then see what your photo is in size and then compress accordingly.

Most books on Amazon and other book sites are about that size...some as small as 80 pixels high.

Steve come on over to the New Every Morning thread, that's where most of the daily posting goes on and it begins each day with a Devotional and Song. A great way to start your day.

I too am a friend of Al's and Marbeth's I live in McKinleyville too. We first met on this site while I was still living in Southern California. I moved here to be close to my youngest son, who lives in Blue Lake now.

Yes, Steve, see you in New Every Morning?  Also, interested in knowing how you manage the resizing.
